We describe 36 patients (six were apparently sporadic cases and 30 were cases from nine families) with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) characterized by a distinct phenotype associated with homozygosity for an Asp90Ala mutation in the CuZn-superoxide dismutase gene. In ten patients with acute transverse myelitis (ATM), seven patients had urinary retention, and the other three patients had difficulty in voiding within 1 month from the onset of the disease. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of urinary dysfunction in Hong Kong Chinese women.
METHODS: A telephone survey was conducted in the territory of Hong Kong. The subjects were a sample of women between the ages of 10 and 90 years. The main outcome determined was the prevalence of urinary dysfunction.
