A potential association between abnormal electromyographic activity--that is, decelerating bursts and complex repetitive discharges--of the urethral sphincter and difficulty in voiding was examined in 57 women with urinary retention. Micturating renograms often need to be carried out on children, with whom difficulty may be experienced in synchronizing onset of micturition with camera and computer acquisition. The authors report a case of rhabdomyosarcoma of posterior urethra they observed in a 10 year-old boy who was referred for an acute urinary retention. Two hundred and two patients undergoing elective surgery were given either atropine (98 patients) or glycopyrrolate (104 patients) for intravenous premedication and as an adjunct to reversal of neuromuscular block by neostigmine in a double-blind study. Two random groups of sixty patients each were given an extract of pygeum africanum in one group, and a placebo in the other. The results highlight the placebo effect (50 per cent of cases), and that the extract provided an overall improvement in the functional symptoms. Late results after primary repair in 49 recent urethral injuries of the urethra treated through a perineal approach by sutures of realignment with splinting, and suprapublic and perineal drainage were assessed by measuring urethral flow, urethrography, urine analysis and other examinations.
