This study aimed to evaluate and compare the associations between these three drugs and amnesia-related adverse events using data from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS). A retrospective analysis was conducted using FAERS data from the first quarter of 2004 through the first quarter of 2025. We extracted reports in which statins, PCSK9 inhibitors, or ezetimibe were listed as the primary suspected drugs and were associated with amnesia-related Preferred Terms (PTs). A total of 5833 amnesia-related reports were identified, including 4051 for statins, 168

Cerebellar, Hippocampal, and Basal Nuclei Transient Edema with Restricted diffusion (CHANTER) syndrome is a neurological condition characterized by reversible cytotoxic edema involving the cerebellum, hippocampi, and basal nuclei after opioid intoxication. Opioid-associated amnestic syndrome (OAS), in contrast, is clinically characterized by persistent anterograde amnesia accompanied by bilateral hippocampal lesions. We present a 20-year-old patient found in deep coma with suspected opioid overdose. Despite the negative urine opioid screen, typical magnetic resonance (MR) findings led to a dia

The hippocampus is a central structure for learning and memory, integrating excitatory and inhibitory activity to support cognitive processing. Among inhibitory mechanisms, phasic and tonic inhibition via γ-aminobutyric acid type A receptors (GABAARs) play pivotal and subtype-specific roles in shaping hippocampal excitability, oscillations, and plasticity. This review collects and presents evidence from molecular, electrophysiological, pharmacological, and behavioral studies to delineate how distinct GABAAR subtypes, specifically α1, α2, α4, and α5GABAARs modulate hippocampus-dependent cogniti

Lesions involving the region immediately posterior to the splenium of the corpus callosum have traditionally been associated with "retrosplenial amnesia." However, the crus of the fornix (FxCr), which runs immediately beneath the splenium, is anatomically vulnerable to secondary involvement that may be overlooked on conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Because the fornix constitutes a critical efferent pathway of the hippocampal Papez circuit, disruption of the FxCr can contribute to amnesia that may resemble the effects of retrosplenial cortical dysfunction. This possibility was rai

BACKGROUND: Immersive virtual reality (VR) distraction reduces procedural pain. The current study explores whether immersive VR also reduces how much people can remember about a painful experience: anterograde amnesia for pain.
METHODS: A within-subject, crossover design was used. Sixteen healthy adult volunteers participated. Each participant received 5 thermal stimuli (some hot, some cold) during no-VR and 5 stimuli during immersive VR distraction (treatment order randomized). They were instructed to memorize the order of hot and cold stimuli for a later memory test. After a brief delay aft

BACKGROUND: Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning can lead to various neurological complications; however, recurrent cerebral infarction as a clinical manifestation is rarely reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a previously healthy 13-year-old girl who was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) with coma following acute severe CO poisoning (carboxyhemoglobin level 46%). She received multi-organ function monitoring and life support in the ICU. After hyperbaric oxygen therapy, her consciousness initially recovered. However, on day 5 post-intoxication, she acutely developed somnolence a

Patients with severe anterograde amnesia have been described as 'stuck in time'; their mental time travel abilities are altered, and they seem to live in the present. Here, we examine an unusual phenomenon in which severely amnesic patients recurrently report the belief that they have just awakened from an unconscious state. A famous case illustrating this phenomenon was that of Clive Wearing who repeatedly wrote 'I am now awake' in his diary. This unique cognitive phenomenon has not been specifically studied until now. We report three new patients who described similar subjective experiences.

BACKGROUND: Memory reconsolidation is a process through which previously consolidated memories become temporarily labile after retrieval and require molecular mechanisms, including protein synthesis and degradation, to be stabilized again. The endocannabinoid system, particularly cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, has been implicated in several forms of learning and memory. However, the specific role of CB1 receptors in the regulation of protein turnover during spatial memory reconsolidation remains incompletely understood. Therefore, this study investigated whether cannabinoid receptor activa

The patient was a 30-year-old man who was admitted to our department 2 months after the onset of anterograde amnesia. Cognitive function tests indicated memory impairment only. MRI FLAIR images of the head showed a high signal in the bilateral medial temporal lobes. Corticosteroid therapy did not improve his symptoms, and he subsequently developed status epilepticus. Concurrently, his cerebrospinal fluid was positive for anti-leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 (LGI1) antibody. He was diagnosed with anti-LGI1 antibody-positive encephalitis. Plasma exchange therapy and intravenous immunoglobulin

OBJECTIVES: Anti-adenylate kinase 5 (AK5) encephalitis is a rare, predominantly limbic autoimmune disorder featuring subacute cognitive and psychiatric decline. Given the limited literature and MRI's suboptimal sensitivity to neuroinflammation, often precluding timely therapeutic escalation, we sought to delineate the clinical and multimodal imaging spectrum of this condition and propose stage-specific management protocols.
METHODS: Two female patients (aged 15 and 65 years) with subacute cognitive and psychiatric-behavioral disturbances were prospectively evaluated with serial MMSE, CASE and

Normal explicit/declarative memory requires a system of anatomically related structures in the medial temporal lobe that includes the hippocampus and the entorhinal, perirhinal, and parahippocampal cortex. Although extensive medial temporal lobe damage in primates causes robust anterograde amnesia, defining the contribution of the hippocampus proper has proved challenging. We revisited that enduring puzzle here, directly addressing a number of factors suspected to contribute to conflicting results across earlier studies. Among them, we explored the effects of selective hippocampus lesions prod

INTRODUCTION: Scopolamine is a tropane alkaloid and non-selective muscarinic receptor antagonist capable of inducing a central anticholinergic toxidrome with pronounced neuropsychiatric and autonomic manifestations. Despite its well-characterized pharmacology, diagnosis remains clinically challenging due to variable presentation and often absent or unreliable exposure history, particularly in non-medical contexts.
METHODS: We report a case of a 34-year-old female presenting with an acute onset of altered mental status following a social event. Clinical findings included delirium, hallucinatio

Purpose: Bilateral damage of fornix bodies has been reported in a few cases of brain tumors and in exceptional cases of ischemia. Methods: a 73-year-old man presented with acute right ataxic hemiparesis and right hypoesthesia. Brain MRI showed an acute ischemia of both fornix bodies and of the left posterior lateral thalamus, along with a septum pellucidum (SP) cyst. MR angiography revealed a 7-mm long stenosis of the initial P2 of the left posterior cerebral artery. Neuropsychological evaluation documented an amnestic syndrome. Fornix bodies and posterolateral thalamus are supplied by the med

Objective: Preclinical research and cognitive neuroscience implicate the hippocampus as a critical node in the neurobiology of drug addiction, as is vividly illustrated in this clinical case study. Method: The patient, JD, was a 52-year-old male with a long history of severe cocaine use disorder who sustained a bilateral ischemic stroke to the hippocampus due to a cocaine-related overdose. He was evaluated at the initial injury and at 12-month follow-up. Results: While hospitalized, neuropsychological assessment revealed both severe 2-year retrograde amnesia and anterograde amnesia with preser

First-generation H1 antihistamines have central nervous system penetration and anticholinergic activity, with potential side effects including sedation, cognitive impairment, and anterograde amnesia. First-generation antihistamines pose risks in driving under the influence of drugs (DUID) and drug-facilitated crimes (DFC) forensic casework. A liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method was developed and validated for five first-generation H1 antihistamines: chlorpheniramine, diphenhydramine, doxylamine, hydroxyzine, and promethazine. The calibration range was 1-200 ng/mL with a 1/x l

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a striking model of isolated amnesia. While hippocampal lesions are well described, the network-level mechanisms and the precise neuropsychological profile remain debated. Our objective was thus to characterize functional and neuropsychological correlates of acute TGA and their longitudinal evolution.
METHODS: Prospective, single-center case-control study of 20 patients with acute TGA and 20 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. All participants completed neuropsychological testing and underwent structural and functional MRI at thr

Although invasive, digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is considered a relatively safe procedure and remains the gold standard for cerebrovascular imaging. Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a self-limited episode of sudden-onset anterograde amnesia that resolves spontaneously within 24 hours. We report a rare occurrence of TGA after diagnostic DSA. A 62-year-old man presented for an angiogram performed under conscious sedation for the diagnosis of a suspected cavernous internal carotid artery aneurysm. Although the DSA revealed normal anatomy, the patient experienced self-resolving memory im

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a well-characterized neurological syndrome primarily affecting adults over the age of 50. It is marked by the sudden onset of anterograde amnesia with repetitive questioning while other cognitive functions remain intact. To date, only a few pediatric cases of TGA have been documented. Here we present the case of a previously healthy 9-year-old girl who developed sudden-onset anterograde amnesia, manifesting with repetitive stereotyped questions and temporal disorientation consistent with the "broken record" phenomenon. The patient's neurological examination an

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a benign clinical syndrome characterized by the sudden onset of anterograde amnesia with preserved consciousness and no focal neurologic deficits, resolving within 24 hours. It predominantly affects middle-aged and older adults and is rarely reported in pediatric populations. In adults, TGA is often preceded by identifiable triggers, including Valsalva maneuvers. We describe a previously healthy, typically developing 16-year-old boy who presented with acute anterograde amnesia after an intentional Valsalva maneuver performed during a school video. He experienc
