BACKGROUND: Korsakoff's syndrome (KS) is a severe neuropsychiatric disorder resulting from chronic alcoholism and thiamine deficiency, characterized by severe anterograde amnesia and central executive deficits. Patients with KS require specialized long-term care due to the complex interaction of cognitive, neuropsychiatric, and somatic issues. Despite the unique needs of KS patients, there is a lack of standardized instruments to assess their perspectives on the quality of care.
AIM: This paper presents the development of the Korsakoff Consumer Quality Index (KCQI), a self-report screening in

Thiamine deficiency triggers an acute neurological emergency, Wernicke's encephalopathy, which, if left untreated, can progress to the chronic amnestic Korsakoff syndrome. While chronic alcohol misuse remains the classic risk factor, thiamine deficiency is increasingly documented in malnutrition, hyperemesis gravidarum, post-bariatric surgery, chronic gastrointestinal disease, and malignancy. This expanded etiological spectrum underscores the need for a broader clinical perspective. This review included studies indexed in EMBASE, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases. Wh

The differential diagnosis of acute-onset amnesia includes transient global amnesia (TGA), transient epileptic amnesia (TEA), and functional (or psychogenic) amnesia. The most common of these, TGA, is a rare but well-described condition characterised by a self-limited episode of dense anterograde amnesia with variable retrograde amnesia. Although the clinical phenomenology of TGA is well described, its pathogenesis is not currently understood, thus preventing the development of evidence-based therapeutic recommendations. Here, TGA, TEA, and functional amnesia are considered in light of the his

Transient global amnesia is an uncommon neurological phenomenon characterized by sudden-onset anterograde amnesia, often accompanied by repetitive questioning and transient cognitive dysfunction, which resolves completely within 24 hours. While self-limiting, this can cause significant distress to both patients and their families, particularly when it arises in the context of medical interventions. Dobutamine stress echocardiography, a widely employed non-invasive diagnostic modality for assessing myocardial ischemia, valvular pathology, and left ventricular function, is generally regarded as

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a syndrome characterized by the sudden onset of anterograde amnesia, typically lasting for a few to less than 24 h. This condition is considered benign, as it is usually self-limited and unrelated to brain lesions; however, TGA may less frequently occur due to vascular brain changes. We report a rare case of a 66-year-old male with a diagnosis of recurrent TGA associated with a brain dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF), alongside the absence of clear triggering and risk factors. He was submitted to embolization and remained event-free until his last attempt, 18

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a common acute amnestic syndrome characterised by sudden-onset predominant anterograde amnesia lasting up to 24 hours. Patients with TGA frequently ask repetitive questions reflecting disorientation and may have some degree of inability to recall general or personal information (retrograde amnesia) while the episode lasts. During the episode of TGA, other cognitive functions are normal. Episodes are self-limited and, by definition, resolve within 24 hours, with recovery of memory function symptoms, except for what happened during the episode. Although diagnosi

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a clinical syndrome characterized by the sudden onset of anterograde amnesia that can last up to 24 h, in the absence of other neurological symptoms. The pathophysiology of TGA is still unknown and comprehensive studies exploring the genetic basis of TGA are lacking. The primary objective of this review is to examine the incidence and characteristics of familial TGA. A secondary objective is to identify any genes that may be associated with the condition. A literature search of Medline and Embase identified 19 relevant articles, including 6 prospective or retr

A 60-year-old woman with hypertension and a family history of aneurysms was found to have an incidental basilar tip aneurysm following a fall at Alicante airport. She had no history of polycystic kidney disease and was a non-smoker. The aneurysm measuring 1.2 cm was discovered following imaging after the head injury. The patient was counselled about treatment options, including endovascular embolization, which she opted for after understanding the cumulative risk of rupture. The procedure was performed via right common femoral artery (CFA) and left superficial femoral (SF) access under ultraso

We present a case of a male in his early 50s assessed in the emergency department with a seemingly clear alcohol history but with classic symptoms of Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE): disorientation, gait ataxia and vertical nystagmus. He also had significant bilateral hearing loss and profound anterograde amnesia. Neuroimaging revealed hallmark signs of WE, including symmetrical T2/fluid-attenuated inversion recovery hyperintensity in the medial thalami. Here, we consider important differentials beyond WE, discuss the importance of revisiting the patient's history and explore the significance o

BACKGROUND: Both anterograde and retrograde amnesia can typically co-occur in limbic autoimmune encephalitis (LAE), including the forms associated with antibodies to CASPR2/LGI1, two protein complexed with the voltage-gated potassium channel (VGKC). However, isolated retrograde amnesia is very rare, and it has never been described in LAE.
METHODS: We report two patients with CASPR2 LAE who showed isolated retrograde amnesia, without other significant cognitive impairments. A systematic literature review was performed in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines on patients with LAE, antibodies to

Our patient is a woman who developed a subacute amnestic syndrome, followed by cognitive impairment, headache, temporal lobe epilepsy and hyponatraemia. An early-stage asymptomatic breast cancer was identified on positron emission tomography (PET) scan. After treatment with immunotherapy with high-dose corticosteroids, intravenous immunoglobulins, upfront rituximab and excision of the tumour, the patient gradually recovered. Partial retrograde and anterograde amnesia persisted during the initial weeks, followed by slow and steady improvement. Autoimmune encephalitis is a severe neurological di

OBJECTIVE: Enduring anterograde amnesia is caused by lesions in bilateral mesial temporal lobes. However, whether transient dysfunction of bilateral mesial temporal regions induces reversible amnesia has not been proven. We investigated this association in patients with epilepsy and analyzed the electroclinical correlation during pure amnestic seizures (PAS). PAS are defined as seizures with anterograde amnesia as the only ictal manifestation, accompanied by preserved responsiveness and other cognitive functions.
METHODS: We retrospectively searched our intracranial EEG database to find PAS.

BACKGROUND: Remimazolam is a novel ultra-short-acting benzodiazepine sedative that has the potential to be an alternative for procedural sedation due to its rapid sedation and recovery, no accumulation effect, stable hemodynamics, minimal respiratory depression, anterograde amnesia effect, and specific antagonist. Here, we aimed to compare the safety and efficacy of remimazolam with dexmedetomidine for awake tracheal intubation by flexible bronchoscopy (ATI-FB).
METHODS: Ninety patients scheduled for ATI-FB were randomly divided into three groups, each consisting of 30 cases: dexmedetomidine

BACKGROUND: A progressive decrease in spontaneous locomotion with repeated exposure to a novel environment has been assessed using both within and between-session measures. While both are well-established and reliable measurements, neither are useful alone as methods to concurrently assess treatment effects on acquisition and retention of habituation.
NEW METHOD: We report a behavioral method that measures habituation by combining the within and between measurements of locomotion. We used a 30 min session divided into 6 five min blocks. In the first novel environment session activity was maxi

Isolated fornix anterior column infarction has rarely been described and is difficult to assess accurately using conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We report the case of a 75-year-old female who experienced acute anterograde amnesia. MRI performed within 24 h after amnesia onset showed an isolated infarction of the bilateral anterior columns of the fornix on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). Her symptoms persisted for up to 50 days, and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) showed disruption of the fiber tracts of the fornix. when acute amnesia syndrome onset, fornix anterior column infar

INTRODUCTION: Isolated infarction of the fornix is a relatively rare stroke syndrome frequently associated with amnesia. The long-term cognitive outcome in cases of acute fornix infarction is poorly understood. This is largely due to the limited number of case studies that have documented cognitive outcomes beyond the acute recovery phase on quantifiable neuropsychological measures. We describe a patient who developed acute amnesia and was subsequently diagnosed on cerebral MRI with bilateral infarction in the anterior columns of the fornix.
METHOD: Comprehensive neuropsychological review was

BACKGROUND: As one major symptom of Alzheimer's disease (AD), anterograde amnesia describes patients with an inability in new memory formation. The crucial role of the entorhinal cortex in forming new memories has been well established, and the neuropeptide cholecystokinin (CCK) is reported to be released from the entorhinal cortex to enable neocortical associated memory and long-term potentiation. Though several studies reveal that the entorhinal cortex and CCK are related to AD, it is less well studied. It is unclear whether CCK is a good biomarker or further a great drug candidate for AD.

OBJECTIVE: Psychological symptoms following a sport-related concussion may affect recovery in adolescent athletes. Therefore, the aims of this study were to 1) describe the proportion of athletes with acute psychological symptoms, 2) identify potential predictors of higher initial psychological symptoms, and 3) determine whether psychological symptoms affect recovery in a cohort of concussed high school athletes.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of high school athletes (14-18 years of age) who sustained a sport-related concussion from November 2017 to April 2022 and presented to a multid

The mammillary bodies (MBOs), a group of hypothalamic nuclei, play a pivotal role in memory formation and spatial navigation. They receive extensive inputs from the hippocampus through the fornix, but the physiological significance of these connections remains poorly understood. Damage to the MBOs is associated with various forms of anterograde amnesia. However, information about the physiological characteristics of the MBO is limited, primarily due to the limited number of studies that have directly monitored MBO activity along with population patterns of its upstream partners.
