Clinical features and prognosis of transient global amnesia in Israel: 6 years' single-center experience.

BACKGROUND: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a benign neurological syndrome of unknown etiology, causing sudden anterograde amnesia that lasts up to 24 h. During the episode of TGA, other cognitive functions are normal. This is the first study describing the characteristics of the disease in Israel. METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients with a confirmed diagnosis of TGA at Shamir Medical Center (SMC) between January 2016 and December 2021. RESULTS: One-hundred and four patients with confirmed TGA were identified, with an average age of 64 years (range: 39-87). The annual incidence

Temporary Global Amnesia With Insular Infarction in a Young Female: A Case Report.

Several neurological conditions, including transient global amnesia (TGA), may present an isolated sudden-onset temporary amnestic symptom. TGA is a benign, self-remitting neurological condition associated with hippocampal dysfunction. Meanwhile, certain other neurological conditions, such as cerebral ischemic stroke and hippocampal epilepsy, require appropriate therapeutic interventions. An isolated temporary amnestic symptom caused by extra-limbic brain regions has not been widely reported yet. We report a case of a 37-year-old female with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who suddenly deve

Case report: Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome after bariatric surgery.

Vitamin and mineral deficiencies are prevalent nutritional disorders following bariatric surgery. Although they are more prevalent after malabsorptive procedures such as bypass, they also occur in restrictive procedures such as gastric sleeve. The mechanisms that lead to the occurrence of these deficits are related to the presence of poor nutritional intake or poor adherence to multivitamins and multimineral supplementation. Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (WKS) is an acute neurological disorder resulting from thiamine deficiency. This syndrome is composed of two distinct phases: first, Wernicke E

Diencephalic versus Hippocampal Amnesia in Alzheimer's Disease: The Possible Confabulation-Misidentification Phenotype.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is clinically heterogeneous, including the classical-amnesic (CA-) phenotype and some variants. OBJECTIVE: We aim to describe a further presentation we (re)named confabulation-misidentification (CM-) phenotype. METHODS: We performed a retrospective longitudinal case-series study of 17 AD outpatients with the possible CM-phenotype (CM-ADs). Then, in a cross-sectional study, we compared the CM-ADs to a sample of 30 AD patients with the CA-phenotype (CA-ADs). The primary outcome was the frequency of cognitive and behavioral features. Data were analyzed as di

How May a Brief Seizure Lead to Prolonged Epileptic Amnesia?

Pure amnestic seizures are defined as self-limited episodes with isolated, anterograde memory loss and have been attributed to bilateral dysfunction of mesial temporal structures. This type of seizure can occur in patients with different forms of temporal lobe epilepsy and has been more recently associated with a late-onset epileptic syndrome, called transient epileptic amnesia (TEA). The mechanisms of such prolonged manifestations are not well known and notably its ictal or post-ictal origin remains poorly understood. We report a case of prolonged anterograde amnesia (lasting several hours) f

Associations between blackout drinking and self-reported everyday cognition among young adults.

INTRODUCTION: Blackout drinking, or alcohol-induced memory loss during at least some part of a drinking occasion, is common among young adults and associated with negative alcohol-related consequences. One potential unique effect of blackout drinking episodes could be prolonged, general difficulties forming new memories through impairments in encoding, storage, or retrieval. The current study examined preliminary associations between blackout drinking and self-reported everyday cognitive functioning (i.e., memory lapses, non-memory cognitive difficulties, cognitive concerns) among a sample of

Longitudinal Imaging in a Patient With Opioid-associated Amnestic Syndrome.

Since 2012, individuals with a history of opioid misuse have infrequently been observed to develop a sudden-onset amnestic syndrome associated with bilateral hippocampal-restricted diffusion on MRI. Follow-up imaging of this opioid-associated amnestic syndrome (OAS) has revealed persistent hippocampal abnormalities. Given these observations, as well as neuropathological studies demonstrating excessive tau deposition in the hippocampi and other brain regions of individuals with opioid misuse, we describe longitudinal imaging of a patient with a history of OAS from presentation through 53 months

Case report: Hyperactive delirium after a single dose of zolpidem administered additionally to psychopharmacotherapy including clozapine.

The non-benzodiazepine hypnotic zolpidem is frequently administered as a short term psychopharmacotherapy for insomnia. Although it is well-established in a broad clinical routine and often well-tolerated, severe delirium and complex sleep behavior were reported in rare cases. Hereby, it remains unclear whether zolpidem's potential for delirium might be enhanced when combined with further psychopharmacotherapeutics. The present case report portrays a young male Caucasian inpatient with schizoaffective disorder, who was admitted due to severe hyperactive delirium after a single dose of zolpidem

The relationship between semantic and episodic memory: evidence from a case of severe anterograde amnesia.

It is increasingly being recognized that new declarative, consciously accessible information can be learned in anterograde amnesia, but it is not clear whether this learning is supported by episodic or semantic memory. We report a case of a 55-year-old man who experienced severe amnesia after limited damage to the medial temporal lobe following neurosurgical complications. His general cognitive performance and knowledge of new French words and public events that occurred before and after the onset of amnesia were assessed. Performance remained satisfactory on post-morbid vocabulary and public

Examining Alcohol-Related Blackouts and Drinking Motives Over Time Among College Women.

OBJECTIVE: Excessive alcohol consumption and its consequences among college women continues despite prevention efforts. One common consequence, alcohol-related blackouts (ARBs), are periods of alcohol-activated anterograde amnesia. The purpose of the current project is to extend the ARB and drinking motive literature by examining their relationship over time. METHOD: A sample of 424 women (88.9% White) completed online surveys assessing their ARBs and drinking motives weekly for 10 weeks. A series of hierarchical generalized linear models were estimated to examine the between-person and withi

Errorful learning improves recognition memory for new vocabulary for people living with memory and dysexecutive impairment following brain injury.

A widely accepted view is that errorless learning is essential for supporting new learning in people with anterograde amnesia, but findings are mixed for those with a broader range of memory impairments. People at a chronic stage of recovery from brain injury (BI) with impaired memory and executive function (N = 26) were compared with adults in a comparison group without any known risks to brain function (N = 25). Learning techniques were compared using a "Generate-and-correct" and "Read-only" condition when learning novel word pairs. At test, both groups scored above chance and showed benefit

Benzodiazepine-induced anterograde amnesia: detrimental side effect to novel study tool.

Benzodiazepines (BZDs) are anxiolytic drugs that act on GABAa receptors and are used to treat anxiety disorders. However, these drugs come with the detrimental side effect of anterograde amnesia, or the inability to form new memories. In this review we discuss, behavioral paradigms, sex differences and hormonal influences affecting BZD-induced amnesia, molecular manipulations, including the knockout of GABAa receptor subunits, and regional studies utilizing lesion and microinjection techniques targeted to the hippocampus and amygdala. Additionally, the relationship between BZD use and cognitiv

On the participation of adenosinergic receptors in the reconsolidation of spatial long-term memory in male rats.

To date, there is insufficient evidence to explain the role of adenosinergic receptors in the reconsolidation of long-term spatial memory. In this work, the role of the adenosinergic receptor family (A1, A2A, A2B, and A3) in this process has been elucidated. It was demonstrated that when infused bilaterally into the hippocampal CA1 region immediately after an early nonreinforced test session performed 24 h posttraining in the Morris water maze task, adenosine can cause anterograde amnesia for recent and late long-term spatial memory. This effect on spatial memory reconsolidation was blocked by
