Prosopamnesia: a case report of amnesia for faces.

Prosopamnesia is a face-selective memory disorder in which face learning is impaired, while face-perception disorder (prosopagnosia) and memory disorders for stimuli other than faces are not present. To date, only two cases of prosopamnesia have been reported in adults - one congenital and one secondary to brain damage. This article reports a case of a 68-year-old woman complaining difficulties recognizing persons she had got to know recently. Neuropsychological examination revealed face-specific anterograde amnesia in the absence of prosopagnosia and other memory impairments. Brain MRI did no

Insomnia as a moderator of alcohol use and blackout: Potential role in acute physiological consequences.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-induced blackout is associated concurrently and prospectively with alcohol-related harm, including emergency room visits and sexual coercion. Although sleep has not been linked empirically to blackout, symptoms of insomnia have also been linked to memory impairment, in which case insomnia symptoms may compound alcohol's negative effects on memory. This study tested insomnia symptoms as a moderator of the association between heavy drinking and alcohol-induced blackout. METHODS: Heavy-drinking young adults in college (N = 461, 69% female) completed assessments online from re

A mixed-methods approach to improve the measurement of alcohol-induced blackouts: ABOM-2.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-induced blackouts describe memory loss resulting from alcohol consumption. Approximately half of college students report experiencing a blackout in their lifetime. Blackouts are associated with an increased risk for negative consequences, including serious injury. Research has documented two types of blackouts, en bloc (EB) and fragmentary (FB). However, research is limited by the lack of a validated measure that differentiates between these two forms of blackout. This study used a mixed-methods approach to improve the assessment of FB and EB among young adults. Specificall

Basal Forebrain Impairment: Understanding the Mnemonic Function of the Septal Region Translates in Therapeutic Advances.

The basal forebrain is one of the three major brain circuits involved in episodic memory formation together with the hippocampus and the diencephalon. The dysfunction of each of these regions is known to cause anterograde amnesia. While the hippocampal pyramidal neurons are known to encode episodic information and the diencephalic structures are known to provide idiothetic information, the contribution of the basal forebrain to memory formation has been exclusively associated with septo-hippocampal cholinergic signaling. Research data from the last decade broadened our understanding about the

A Neuropsychological Rehabilitation Framework to Address Cognitive and Neurobehavioral Impairments After Strokes to the Anterior Communicating Artery.

Patients with strokes to the Anterior Communicating Artery (ACoA) pose an important challenge to rehabilitation teams due to a particular mix of cognitive and behavioral impairments (anosognosia, anterograde amnesia, prospective memory problems, and executive dysfunction). These deficits often compromise engagement with rehabilitation, learning and generalization. The goal of this article is to describe the long-term presentation of a patient with an ACoA stroke (Mrs. B, a 60-year-old electric engineer) as well as her rehabilitation needs and the many challenges experienced by the rehabilitati

Bilateral Acute Hippocampal Ischemia in Two Patients Abusing Cocaine: What is the Outcome?

Hippocampal ischemia is a rare complication of cocaine abuse that has been thought to arise from vasospasm, anoxic injury, and/or catecholaminergic excitotoxicity. We present two cases of patients abusing cocaine, who presented with an acute onset anterograde amnesia due to bilateral hippocampal ischemia, and had different outcomes. Case 1 is a 49-year-old male with a history of IV heroin abuse who presented after being found down for an unknown period of time. He awoke with no memory of events leading up to hospitalization and was unable to retain new information. Urine toxicology was positiv

DNA methylation inhibition participates in the anterograde amnesia key mechanism through the suppression of the transcription of genes involved in memory formation in grape snails.

The study of the amnesia mechanisms is of both theoretical and practical importance. The mechanisms of anterograde amnesia are the least studied, due to the lack of an experimental model that allows studying this amnesia type molecular and cellular mechanisms. Previously, we found that conditional food aversion memory reconsolidation impairment in snails by NMDA glutamate receptor antagonists led to the amnesia induction, in the late stages of which (>10 days) repeated training did not cause long-term memory formation. In the same animals, long-term memory aversion to a new food type was forme

Safe sedation during diagnostic and therapeutic flexible bronchoscopy in Japan: A review of the literature.

We explored whether a combination of an opioid (fentanyl or pethidine) and midazolam could safely sedate Japanese patients undergoing bronchoscopic procedures. We searched the PubMed Medline and Igaku Chuo Zasshi (ICHUSHI) databases from 1980 to 2022 for papers on sedatives used during bronchoscopy, especially opioids (fentanyl and pethidine) and midazolam. The keywords were "bronchoscopy" and "sedation" ("kikanshikyo" and "chinsei", respectively, in Japanese). The results showed that midazolam was the preferred sedation agent during flexible bronchoscopy; with midazolam sedation is rapid, and

Effects of Chronic Oral Administration of Midazolam on Memory and Circadian Rhythms in Rats.

Studies have shown the ability of benzodiazepine drugs to cause memory loss in animals and humans. Midazolam is a benzodiazepine commonly administered intravenously during surgical procedures because it reacts rapidly, causes anterograde amnesia, and has few side effects. It has also been used in palliative medicine where, among others, an oral route has been employed for chronic administration of the drug. The current study evaluated the effects of chronic orally administered midazolam on spatial working memory and procedural memory in control and experimental female rats over a three-week ex

Life-long deficits in social adaptation and the frontal lobes: New evidence, seventy-five years after Ackerly and Benton's landmark case report of JP.

The case of JP, reported by Ackerly and Benton in 1948 with a detailed follow-up by Ackerly in 1964, stands as the index case of developmental prefrontal damage and its impact on social adaptation. Although the 1948 case report included findings from a 1933 pneumoencephalogram and exploratory craniotomy, a definitive cause was never established for JP's prefrontal damage. Etiologies were never determined for the left-sided seizures that occurred when JP was age four, nor for the progressive anterograde amnesia that JP developed in middle age. Given Ackerly's thoroughness and long-term follow-u

Comparative Study of the Effect of a DNA Methyltransferase Inhibitor and a Histone Deacetylase Inhibitor on Memory Formation Processes in Anterograde Amnesia.

The participation of DNA methylation and histone acetylation in the mechanisms of anterograde amnesia and memory recovery was studied on grape snails trained in conditioned food aversion. Anterograde amnesia developed 10 days after memory reconsolidation impairment with an NMDA glutamate receptor antagonist and was characterized by long-term memory formation impairment upon repeated training. DNA methyltransferase inhibitor injections to snails 1 h before repeated training, as well as 15 min or 4 h after repeated training, caused rapid formation of memory that persisted for at least 10 days. Prevalence and correlates of alcohol-induced blackout in a diverse sample of veterans.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-induced blackouts have been associated concurrently and prospectively with alcohol-related harm. Although rates of heavy drinking among military samples tend to be comparable or higher than rates among civilian samples, the prevalence and correlates of blackout in the military population are understudied. METHODS: Veterans (N = 241, 29% female, 39% Black) reported on their alcohol consumption and mental health as part of a larger health-related study among veterans. In this secondary analysis, we tested theoretically and empirically informed predictors (gender, drinking qu

Subcortical signal alteration of corticospinal tracts. A radiologic manifestation of ARIA: A case report.

Patients with Alzheimer's disease who have been given monoclonal antibodies targeting amyloid-β (Aβ) (eg, gantenerumab, donanemab, lecanemab, and aducanumab) for scientific purposes may have a spectrum of imaging findings known as amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA), shown on brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. These neuroimaging abnormalities are caused by antibody-mediated destruction of accumulated Aβ aggregates in cerebral blood vessels and brain parenchyma. ARIA may demonstrate as brain edema or sulcal effusion (ARIA-E) or as hemosiderin deposits caused by brain parench

Pineal cyst apoplexy and memory loss: a novel complication.

An 8-year-old boy presented to our hospital complaining of a bilateral headache associated with episodes of anterograde amnesia. He had a road traffic accident 3 years ago when a computed tomography (CT) scan revealed traumatic brain injury. In addition, a small pineal cyst (PC) was noted with minor intramural calcifications. A follow-up CT a day later demonstrated increased density in the pineal gland of 60 Hounsfield Units, suggestive of apoplectic changes in the PC. However, the patient was lost to follow-up and presented with memory loss a year and a half later, upon which CT and magnetic

Recurrent amnesia caused by early seizures after hippocampal infarction: a case report.

BACKGROUND: We report the case of a patient with recurrent episodes of disturbed memory suggestive of transient epileptic amnesia, and a focal hippocampal lesion typically associated with transient global amnesia. We argue how careful consideration of clinical, electrophysiological and imaging findings can resolve this apparent contradiction and lead to a diagnosis of early symptomatic post-stroke seizures that links brain structure to function in a new, clinically relevant way. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old patient was identified in clinical practice in our tertiary care centre and was ev

Transient Global Amnesia.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a clinical syndrome characterized by anterograde amnesia, mild retrograde amnesia, and confusion up to 24 hours. Most commonly seen in patients older than 50 years, TGA results from the temporary impairment of short-term memory formation. Clinically, patients have time disorientation and often ask repeated questions regarding the day's events. Vomiting, headache, blurry vision, dizziness, and nausea may be present. A physically or psychologically stressful precipitating event, such as emotional stress, significant physical exertion, exposure to extreme tempera

Transient global amnesia: Model, mechanism, hypothesis.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a rare but well-described neurological disorder characterised by an acute self-limited episode of dense anterograde amnesia with retrograde amnesia of variable extent. Although the clinical phenomenology, neuropsychology, neuroimaging, prognosis, and precipitating and predisposing factors of TGA are well described, the pathogenesis is not currently understood. Existing proposals - epileptic seizure, stroke or transient ischaemic attack, migraine aura - all have shortcomings. Based on a computational neural network model of mnemonic function, a new model of TGA

A Case of Transient Global Amnesia: A Rare Diagnosis.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a syndrome characterized by a loss of anterograde memory with a less prominent loss in retrograde episodic memory that resolves within 24 hours or less. In this report, we present a rare case of a 62-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with sudden onset confusion and memory loss. Prior to this, the patient had no significant medical or psychiatric history. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computerized tomography (CT) showed a normal presentation, and a neurology consultation ruled out any organic brain abnormalities. After ruling out al
