Retrograde amnesia for the stress-induced impairment of extinction: time-dependent and not so forgotten.

We investigated whether retrograde amnesia for the stress-induced impairment of extinction retrieval shares similar characteristics with original acquisition memories. The first experiment demonstrated that cycloheximide administered shortly after a single restraint stress session alleviated the impairment of extinction retrieval but not when administered following a longer delay (i.e., the amnesia for stress is time-dependent). A second experiment showed that the retrograde amnesia for stress could be alleviated by a second brief exposure to the stressor. These results demonstrating that amne

A partial habituation method to test for anterograde and retrograde amnestic treatment effects: Evidence that antagonism of the NMDA receptor can induce anterograde but not retrograde amnestic effects.

BACKGROUND: A progressive decrease in spontaneous locomotion with repeated exposure to a novel environment has been assessed using both within and between-session measures. While both are well-established and reliable measurements, neither are useful alone as methods to concurrently assess treatment effects on acquisition and retention of habituation. NEW METHOD: We report a behavioral method that measures habituation by combining the within and between measurements of locomotion. We used a 30 min session divided into 6 five min blocks. In the first novel environment session activity was maxi

Post-traumatic amnesia: a scoping review & content analysis of behavioral disturbances.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this scoping review was to identify behavioral disturbances exhibited by patients in post-traumatic amnesia (PTA). While behavioral disturbances are common in PTA, research into their presentation and standardized measures for their assessment are limited. DESIGN: The study protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42021268275). A scoping review of databases was performed according to pre-determined criteria on 29 July 2021 and updated on 13 July 2022. A conventional content analysis was used to examine and categorize behavioral disturbances. RESULTS: Thirty papers met

Implementation of activities of daily living retraining for individuals in post-traumatic amnesia.

Background Despite evidence of the efficacy of activities of daily living (ADL) retraining during post-traumatic amnesia (PTA) following traumatic brain injury (TBI), utilisation of this intervention in practice is unclear. Utilising an implementation science framework, the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research, this study explored efforts to translate ADL retraining during PTA into the clinical practice of occupational therapists (OTs) working in TBI rehabilitation settings across Australia. Methods Participants were 44 OTs who attended a day-long training workshop that included

Risk factors for clinically important traumatic brain injury in minor head injury in older people.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The incidence of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in older individuals is increasing with an increase in the older population. For older people, the required medical interventions and hospitalization following minor head injury have negative impacts, which have not been reported in literature up till now. We aimed to investigate the risk factors for clinically important traumatic brain injury (ciTBI) in older patients with minor head injury. METHODS: This is a retrospective single-center cohort study. Older patients aged ≥65 years presenting with head injury and a Glasg

News event memory in amnestic and non-amnestic MCI, heritable risk for dementia, and subjective memory complaints.

Robust and sensitive clinical measures are needed for more accurate and earlier detection of Alzheimer's disease (AD), for staging preclinical AD, and for gauging the efficacy of treatments. Mild impairment on episodic memory tests is thought to indicate a cognitive risk of developing AD and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), considered to be a transitional stage between normal aging and AD. Novel tests of semantic memory, such as memory for news events, are also impaired early on but have received little clinical attention even though they may provide a novel way to assess cognitive risk for AD

A memory access gate controlled by dynamic contexts.

Temporary difficulties in accessing the contents of memories are a common experience in everyday life, for example, when we try to recognize a known person in an unusual context. In addition, recent experiments seem to indicate that retrograde amnesia in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease is due to disorders in accessing memories that were installed normally. These facts suggest the existence of an intermediate step between the stimulus arrival and the associative recognition. In this work, a multimodular neurocomputational model is presented postulating the existence of a neural gate tha

The importance of early recognition of extraintestinal manifestations of digestive tract dysfunction following gastrointestinal surgery.

We report a case of a 47-year-old male who presented with altered mental status. A review of his records revealed a weight loss of 20 lbs over the past 6 years, a recent hospitalization for idiopathic polyneuropathy with failure to thrive, and prior surgeries for peptic ulcer disease and small bowel obstruction. He was alert but had retrograde amnesia and peripheral neuropathy. A diagnosis was made, and the patient improved with treatment but was unfortunately left with irreversible neurological deficits. We discuss the importance of recognizing the extraintestinal manifestations of gastrointe

Association of Sport Helmet Status on Concussion Presentation and Recovery in Male Collegiate Student-Athletes.

Sporting helmets contain force attenuating materials which reduce traumatic head injury risk and may influence sport-related concussion (SRC) sequelae. The purpose of this study was to examine the association of sport helmet status with SRC-clinical presentation and recovery trajectories in men's collegiate athletes. Sport helmet status was based on the nature of sports being either helmeted/non-helmeted. 1070 SRCs in helmeted (HELM) sports (Men's-Football, Ice Hockey, and Lacrosse), and 399 SRCs in non-helmeted (NOHELM) sports (Men's-Basketball, Cheerleading, Cross Country/Track & Field, Divi

The role of executive functions in long-term memory: case report.

The role of executive functions in long-term memory has been studied. We describe a single-case study, consisting of a 45-year-old male patient, hospitalized for right frontal stroke. After the stroke, the patient had memory alterations in everyday activities. However, performance in short-term memory tests was not significantly altered. Long-term memory assessments included pre- and post-stroke episodic, semantic, and procedural memories. Specific skills involved in the acquisition of new learning (auditory-verbal and visual reproduction) were also evaluated, as well as executive functions. T

Clinical Heterogeneity in Alzheimer's Disease: A Possible New Amnesic Phenotype.

We rediscovered a phenotype of AD known in the early 1900s as presbyophrenia, but then forgotten, and renamed as confabulation-misidentification phenotype. The phenotype includes diencephalic amnesia whose prototype is Korsakoff syndrome. The main features are anterograde and retrograde amnesia with marked disorientation and confabulation, executive impairments, reduced insight and attention deficits, misidentification, minor hallucination and other delusions, behavioral disturbances, and early anxiety. In this article, we summarize what we have discovered about the new phenotype and what is s

Research Letter: Retrograde Amnesia and Posttraumatic Amnesia in Service Members and Veterans With Remote History of TBI.

OBJECTIVE: The recently updated American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine diagnostic criteria for mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) removed retrograde amnesia (RA) as a main criterion for mTBI, recommending it be included as a substitute criterion only when posttraumatic amnesia (PTA) cannot be reliably assessed. This study aimed to investigate the evidence base for this recommendation. SETTING: Military treatment facility. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 752 US military service members/veterans (mean age = 36.1 years, SD = 9.4 years) with a history of TBI prospectively enrolled in the Defense

Patients' Cognitive Potential Is Associated With Cognitive Performance After an Acute Course of Electroconvulsive Therapy.

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive function after an acute treatment of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) can highly vary between individuals. This study aimed to extend prior research on individual factors, which influence outcomes by assessing whether a combination of 2 individual factors, level of education and lifetime occupational attainment, may be informative. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted using data from 24 patients with major depressive episode who underwent acute treatment with ECT. Cognitive functioning was assessed at pretreatment, during the acute course and 1-3 days after acute

Human retrograde amnesia and memory consolidation.

This paper reports a reassessment of published literature on the question of whether retrograde amnesia data from patients with severe trauma supports the idea that there is ongoing consolidation of long-lasting memories. That is, memory consolidation continues for decades with older memories being increasingly consolidated, and, thus, more protected from forgetting. Our analysis was limited to patients with specific traumas rather than neurodegenerative conditions that can be complicated by the additional presence of significant anterograde amnesia. These constraints were used because trauma

Associating sensory cues with incoming seizures: developing an animal model of auras.

For patients with epilepsy, one of the biggest problems is the unpredictability of the time when the next seizure will occur. Interestingly, some epileptic patients experience a sensory sensation preceding seizures, called aura, which helps them move to safety before a seizure. Here, we describe the development of the first animal model of auras, which could allow for a more detailed study of this phenomenon. Specifically, in mice, we presented sensory stimuli (sound and light cues) a few seconds before kindling an animal to induce seizures. Animals were kindled by electrical stimulation in th

The effects of treatment, clinical and demographic factors on recovery of orientation after ECT: A care network study.

BACKGROUND: Time to reorientation after electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has been shown to predict retrograde amnesia and is a useful measure for monitoring patients over the acute treatment course. This study investigated the effects of treatment, clinical and demographic factors on the recovery of orientation after ECT. METHODS: Data from 555 ECT patients across two different clinical CARE Network sites were analysed. The main outcome variable was recovery of orientation on the 10-Item Orientation Questionnaire assessed after every ECT treatment. A linear mixed-effects repeated measures mode

Anterograde versus Retrograde Effects of Damage to Identified Learning and Memory Systems during Acquisition, Retention, and Re-Acquisition of an Instrumental Visual Discrimination Task: Dorsal Striatum, Perirhinal Cortex, and Hippocampus.

BACKGROUND: The goal of these experiments was to determine which learning and memory system(s) were necessary for the retention of visual discriminations and subsequent acquisition of a second problem. The dorsal striatum should be involved in the acquisition and expression of this task based on previous work implicating this region in instrumental learning and memory processes. The perirhinal cortex has been implicated in learning and memory processes associated with visual information like objects, and pictures and may also play a role in the acquisition and/or retention of visual discrimina

An Unusual Case of Limbic Encephalitis Caused by Whipple Disease.

Whipple disease (WD), a multisystemic infectious disorder caused by Tropheryma whipplei (T. whipplei), typically presents with gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, GI bleeding, and weight loss. Uncommonly, it can also involve the central nervous system (CNS) and may present with a range of symptoms, including personality changes, dementia, and rhombencephalitis. Prompt antibiotic treatment and careful follow-up are crucial for favorable patient outcomes and a reduction in morbidity and mortality. In this case, we describe a 46-year-old male with primary CNS-WD and d
