INTRODUCTION: Acute amnestic syndrome is an uncommon clinical presentation of neurological disease. Differential diagnosis encompasses several syndromes including Wernicke-Korsakoff and transient global amnesia (TGA). Structural lesions of the fornix account for a minority of cases of acute amnestic syndromes. Etiology varies from iatrogenic injury to ischemic, inflammatory, or neoplastic lesions. A prompt diagnosis of the underlying pathology is essential but challenging. The aim of this review is to systematically review the existing literature regarding cases of acute amnestic syndrome asso

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is an uncommon neurologic disorder that consists of a sudden and temporary loss of memory, both present and past. Its causes and risk factors are not well known. We describe a case of a 58-year-old woman who was brought to the emergency department (ED) with sudden onset loss of memory and disorientation after a dive in the ocean. She presented memory deficits with incapacity to retain new memories and amnesia for the previous 24 hours. All exams ordered were normal, including computed tomography of the brain and laboratory analysis. After six hours of close monit

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Atorvastatin is a drug widely used to prevent cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Current observational studies suggest that atorvastatin may be associated with cognitive dysfunction (especially memory loss). However, some studies have suggested that dyslipidemia may be an important factor in cognitive dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to perform a pharmacovigilance analysis using real-world data from the US Food and Drug Administration's Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) to assess whether memory loss is an adverse effect of atorvastatin and to

OBJECTIVE: Published evidence suggests that cognitive impairment during a TGA (transient global amnesia) spell may not be confined to episodic memory. We undertook a systematic review to determine the pattern of cognitive deficits during a TGA episode. As a secondary objective, we aimed to delineate the course of cognitive recovery.
METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, and Google scholar were systematically searched up to October 2023. Observational controlled studies including 10 or more TGA patients (Hodges and Warlow criteria) were retrieved. Data from case-control, cross-sectional, and coho

Punctate hippocampal hyperintensity (PHH) on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is a well-known observation in patients with transient global amnesia (TGA), which is characterized by acute self-limiting episodes of anterograde and retrograde amnesia. These lesions occur unilaterally or bilaterally in the CA1 regions of the hippocampus, which are crucial for memory processes. PHH on DWI is well-documented in TGA but rare in other conditions. This case report describes a 56-year-old male bus driver who presented with PHH on DWI following epileptic seizures without TGA-like episodes. The patient ex

CONTEXT: Concussion research has primarily focused on sport-related mechanisms and excluded non-sport-related mechanisms. In adult populations, non-sport-related concussions (non-SRCs) demonstrated worse clinical outcomes compared with sport-related concussions (SRCs); however, investigations of non-SRCs in college-aged patients are limited.
OBJECTIVES: To examine clinical outcomes in collegiate athletes with non-SRCs compared with SRCs and explore sex differences in outcomes among collegiate athletes with non-SRCs.
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
SETTING: Clinical setting.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is clinically heterogeneous, including the classical-amnesic (CA-) phenotype and some variants.
OBJECTIVE: We aim to describe a further presentation we (re)named confabulation-misidentification (CM-) phenotype.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective longitudinal case-series study of 17 AD outpatients with the possible CM-phenotype (CM-ADs). Then, in a cross-sectional study, we compared the CM-ADs to a sample of 30 AD patients with the CA-phenotype (CA-ADs). The primary outcome was the frequency of cognitive and behavioral features. Data were analyzed as di

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a serious global risk factor leading to the onset of cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative diseases. Cognitive and memory impairment following a TBI is associated with the dysregulation of cholinergic neurotransmission in the brains of subjects. The extent of memory impairment following a TBI is linked with the sex of the subject. This study aimed to identify the sex-dimorphic role of muscarinic cholinergic modulation in neurological functioning and episodic memory retrieval in a mouse model of TBI. Balb/c mice were divided into four groups of males and fou

The Ca 2+ /calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) is a central regulator of learning and memory, which poses a problem for targeting it therapeutically. Indeed, our study supports prior conclusions that long-term interference with CaMKII signaling can erase pre-formed memories. By contrast, short-term pharmacological CaMKII inhibition with tatCN19o interfered with learning in mice only mildly and transiently (for less than 1 h) and did not at all reverse pre-formed memories. This was at ≥500fold of the dose that protected hippocampal neurons from cell death after a highly clinically

OBJECTIVE: A paucity of data exists regarding the duration of post-traumatic amnesia (PTA) as a predictor of cognitive functioning among children after traumatic brain injury (TBI). The study aimed to assess the relationship between PTA duration and areas of neurocognitive function among the pediatric population in the sub-acute phase of recovery and rehabilitation.
METHODS: Data were collected from medical files on 103 children aged 5.5-16.5 hospitalized at a pediatric rehabilitation department with a diagnosis of moderate-severe TBI (msTBI) between the years 2004-2019. The Children Orientat

BACKGROUND: Undesired intrathecal injections represent an important subset of medical errors, albeit rare. Clinical effects depend on the type and concentration of drug(s) injected. Here we report on the case of a healthy woman with persistent low back pain, treated with a paravertebral injection of lidocaine, thiocolchicoside, and L-acetylcarnitine at an orthopedic practice.
CASE REPORT: A 42-year-old Caucasian woman, with no relevant past medical history, received a lumbar paravertebral injection of lidocaine, thiocolchicoside, and L-acetylcarnitine for persistent low back pain. Approximate

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective treatment for refractory major depressive disorder with suicidal ideation. The most common adverse medical events are transient retrograde amnesia, falls and pneumonia. Hip fractures, associated with high-energy trauma by convulsions, were occasionally reported in western countries, in the period before the COVID-19 pandemic. Strict COVID-19 regulations influenced the course and further investigation of the treatment of post-ECT complications. A 33-year-old man, previously diagnosed with major depressive disorder, had a history of nine successful

BACKGROUND: Previous sport-related concussion research highlights post-injury characteristics that influence recovery trajectories; however, there is limited information regarding premorbid factors that affect sport-related concussion risk.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to (a) compare premorbid demographic factors among a large cohort of collegiate student athletes who did or did not sustain a sport-related concussion and (b) assess differences in acute injury characteristics based on biological sex and contact level.
METHODS: We conducted a cohort study of university student athletes from 22 sports e

Here, we examined mechanisms that affect retrograde memory in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (a-MCI) as a function of longitudinal clinical outcome. 8 a-MCI who converted to Alzheimer's dementia (AD) during the subsequent 3-year follow-up (converter a-MCI) and 10 a-MCI who remained clinically stable during the same period (stable a-MCI) were compared at the baseline evaluation (i.e., when they were diagnosed as a-MCI) using a remote memory questionnaire for public events that allows disentangling the differential contribution of storage and retrieval mechanisms to performance accuracy. BACKGROUND: The identification of different factors affecting anesthesia and physiological changes during anesthesia can be effective in improving the quality of anesthesia. Midazolam is a benzodiazepine that has been used for many years for sedation under anesthesia. Stress is also an important factor affecting memory and other physiological changes, such as blood pressure and heart rate.
OBJECTIVES: his study aimed to investigate the effects of stress on retrograde and anterograde amnesia among patients undergoing general anesthesia.

PURPOSE: Remimazolam, a newly developed ultra-short-acting benzodiazepine, provides early recovery of consciousness but its effects on memory recovery are unclear. This study examined memory recovery after emergence from general anesthesia using remimazolam.
METHODS: Seventy-four patients undergoing breast surgery between October 2021 and March 2022 were enrolled and randomly assigned to receive propofol (control group) or remimazolam as general anesthetic during surgery. The primary endpoint was the number of posters patients remembered 24 h after surgery (among four posters shown after reco
