For the first time, we assess episodic simulation in a patient with visual memory deficit amnesia, following damage to visual association cortices. Compared to control participants, the patient with visual memory deficit amnesia shows severely restricted responses when asked to simulate different types of future episodic scenarios. Surprisingly, the patient's responses are more limited in cases where the scenarios require less reliance on visual information. We explain this counterintuitive finding through discussing how the severe retrograde amnesia in visual memory deficit amnesia limits the

BACKGROUND: The artery of Percheron is an uncommon anatomic variant which supplies the bilateral paramedian thalami and rostral midbrain. While infarction of its vascular territory can result in a wide range of symptoms, paramedian thalamic syndrome is classically described as a triad of symptoms including vertical gaze disturbances, fluctuating level of consciousness, and amnesia. There is minimal evidence to date to characterize the long-term cognitive consequences of infarction of the artery of Percheron utilizing neuropsychological assessment.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 40-year-old

We report neuropsychological and neuropathological findings for a patient (A.B.), who developed memory impairment after a cardiac arrest at age 39. A.B. was a clinical psychologist who, although unable to return to work, was an active participant in our neuropsychological studies for 24 y. He exhibited a moderately severe and circumscribed impairment in the formation of long-term, declarative memory (anterograde amnesia), together with temporally graded retrograde amnesia covering ∼5 y prior to the cardiac arrest. More remote memory for both facts and autobiographical events was intact. His ne

The duration of post-traumatic amnesia (PTA) following traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a key diagnostic and outcome indicator. However, concerningly, different PTA paradigms record different PTA durations: some over-estimate, others under-estimate, PTA. Thus, a compromise is implied. The potential effect of in-hospital confounders including opioids is unknown. Three clinical groups were prospectively recruited. Group-1: in-patients with moderate-severe-TBI (MS-TBI), considered likely 'in-PTA'. Group-2: patients rehabilitating after recent MS-TBI, considered 'out-of-PTA'. Group-3: orthopaedic i

The role of the anterior temporal lobes (ATLs) in semantic representation remains still much debated. Long thought to support domain-general semantic processing, recent accounts have alternatively suggested that they may be preferentially involved in the processing of person-related semantic knowledge. Several studies have supported such a distinction, but few have either examined both types of semantic processing together, or considered the role of potentially important confounding variables. Here, we address these issues by investigating both domain-general and person-specific semantic proce

Seizures cause retrograde amnesia, but underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. We tested whether seizure activated neuronal circuits overlap with spatial memory engram and whether seizures saturate LTP in engram cells. A seizure caused retrograde amnesia for spatial memory task. Spatial learning and a seizure caused cFos expression and synaptic plasticity overlapping set of neurons in the CA1 of the hippocampus. Recordings from learning-labeled CA1 pyramidal neurons showed potentiated synapses. Seizure-tagged neurons were also more excitable with larger rectifying excitatory postsynaptic

We present an unusual case of a middle-aged patient with a near-total loss of autobiographical memory; the memory of one's own personal history and personal identity following a motor vehicle accident. The nature of his autobiographical memory loss was anterograde and retrograde amnesia, with the preservation of procedural learning, including an extensive set of medical skills, which he attributed to his career as a psychiatrist. Of significance was the absence of any traumatic changes in the medial temporal lobe structures, hippocampal formation, amygdala, and entorhinal cortex on brain imagi

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a sudden onset of anterograde and retrograde amnesia. We aimed to assess differences in terms of cortical thickness and structural brain connectome between patients with TGA (at acute and delayed postrecovery stages) and matched controls.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report on 18 consecutive patients with TGA who underwent 3T MR imaging, including DTI and MPRAGE sequences, at the acute (mean delay postonset: 44 hours) and delayed post-recovery (mean delay: 35 days) stages. Structural connectome was assessed in patients with TGA and in 18

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a neurological disorder characterized by sudden onset of anterograde and retrograde amnesia. TGA following angiography is rare and its possible etiologies have not been determined definitively. Herein, I report a case of TGA after carotid artery stenting with DWI findings, which, to date, has not been reported. The patient was a 71-year-old man who developed TGA following carotid artery stenting. Diffusion-weighted imaging demonstrated a focal restricted diffusion lesion in the left medial temporal lobe. Left carotid artery stenting was performed via the commo

OBJECTIVE: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is characterized by sudden onset of larger anterograde and milder retrograde amnesia lasting up to 24 h. We aimed to investigate the long-term risk of epilepsy up to 8 years in subjects after TGA in the population-based cohort study.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a control cohort study with an 8-year follow-up period. All data was collected retrospectively. From all potential participants more than 18 years of age without epilepsy and TGA history, we identified TGA subjects and non-TGA controls with age, gender and comorbidities matched in a 1:3

Few studies have investigated transient global amnesia (TGA) in the context of a concussion and the concussion sequelae following TGA. Here we review the case of a 43-year-old male with onset of transient global anterograde and retrograde amnesia 22 days after a sustained concussion. The patient's head CT, MRI of brain, and EEG were reported normal, and the patient regained full cognitive function 8 h after the TGA episode, with no recollection of the conspiring events. Following the TGA episode, the patient experienced notable worsening of concussive symptoms, including headache, head pressur

Since the seminal work on the patient HM, who in his adulthood presented an acquired amnesic syndrome following the resection of the bilateral temporal lobe, other research has described several cases of isolated memory dysfunction in children. This chapter presents developmental and long-lasting memory disorders emerging from an organic or neurologic cause at birth or in infancy. More notably, we focus on developmental amnesic syndrome caused by neonatal bihippocampal damage and memory dysfunction caused by medial temporal developmental epilepsy. We describe these two pediatric populations an

OBJECTIVE AND BACKGROUND: To analyze the clinical effect of modified tibial transverse transport combined with the Masquelet technique in treating diabetic foot with ulcers (Wagner stages 2-4). This study was conducted to explore a novel combined surgical strategy for Wagner 2-4 diabetic foot ulcers that respond poorly to conventional treatments.
METHODS: A total of 46 patients with Wagner 2-4 diabetic foot ulcers were enrolled (23 per group). Both groups received standardized preoperative glycemic control and infection management. The intervention group underwent modified tibial transverse t

Neocortical-hippocampal interactions support new episodic (event) memories, but there is conflicting evidence about the dependence of remote episodic memories on the hippocampus. In line with systems consolidation and computational theories of episodic memory, evidence from model organisms suggests that the cornu ammonis 3 (CA3) hippocampal subfield supports recent, but not remote, episodic retrieval. In this study, we demonstrated that recent and remote memories were susceptible to a loss of episodic detail in human participants with focal bilateral damage to CA3. Graph theoretic analyses of

Due to the efficacy of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in the guideline-based treatment of therapy-resistant depressive episodes and the clinical significance of cognitive impairments, it is necessary to optimize the management of potential side effects. As cognitive side effects of the treatment combined with impairments resulting from the depression may lead to a reduction in the ability to function in social contexts and reduce subjective wellbeing, comprehensive information about and monitoring of potential side effects is essential. In this review we present the clinical relevance and mea

We recently proposed that retrograde amnesia does not result from a disruption of the consolidation/reconsolidation processes but rather to the integration of the internal state induced by the amnesic treatment within the initial memory. Accordingly, the performance disruption induced by an amnesic agent does not result from a disruption of the memory fixation process, but from a difference in the internal state present during the learning phase (or reactivation) and at the later retention test: a case of state-dependency. In the present article, we will review similarities and differences the

Emotional arousal often facilitates memory for some aspects of an event while impairing memory for other aspects of the same event. Across three experiments, we found that emotional arousal amplifies competition among goal-relevant representations, such that arousal impairs memory for multiple goal-relevant representations while enhancing memory for solo goal-relevant information. We also present a computational model to explain the mechanisms by which emotional arousal can modulate memory in opposite ways via the local/synaptic-level noradrenergic system. The model is based on neurophysiologi
