A 2-y-old spayed female mixed-breed dog was presented with a 3-mo history of seizures. Coalescing intra-axial complex cystic lesions in the right cerebral hemisphere identified on MRI were suggestive of hydatid cysts; however, PCR testing of a fecal sample for Echinococcus spp. was negative. The dog was euthanized after 3 mo of treatment due to worsening signs and was submitted for postmortem examination. Coalescing 0.5-3-cm cavitations effaced ~20% of the left and 40% of the right cerebral hemispheres, and contained numerous 3-5-mm long ovoid-to-elongate, soft, white-to-clear metacestodes. Si

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a leading cause of acquired epilepsy and other neurological disturbances worldwide. Developmental venous anomaly (DVA) is the most common cerebral vascular malformation, typically asymptomatic and discovered incidentally. This case report illustrates the rare instance of a DVA found adjacent to an NCC lesion on imaging. The patient is a 26-year-old male presenting with new-onset seizures. The diagnosis was made on MRI brain and serum cysticercosis antibody testing. Limited literature is available on the coexistence of these two entities, prompting contemplation abou

Cysticercosis is a parasitic disease caused by Taenia solium, primarily transmitted via fecal-oral route. It is a public health concern because it contributes to increasing morbidity of epilepsy. Its true prevalence remains largely unknown in Côte d'Ivoire. This study aimed to estimate the seroprevalence of cysticercosis in rural southeastern Côte d'Ivoire and identify risk factors. Two cross-sectional cluster sample surveys were conducted in villages in the departments of Dabou and Agboville. Data on socio-demographic, neurological history, knowledge about taeniasis/cysticercosis complex and

INTRODUCTION: Taenia solium cysticercosis is a disease known as porcine cysticercosis (PC) in swine/pigs but also taeniosis and cysticercosis in humans. The larval stage of the pork tapeworm (T. solium) has for decades been responsible for lowering economic productivity of pigs and has direct human health defects. This study assessed the disease situation in pigs to provide baseline data for appropriate disease control in humans and pigs in Oyam district following a significant improvement in latrine coverage in Uganda.
METHODOLOGY: A study was conducted in Oyam district in which blood was ob

BACKGROUND: Taenia solium is responsible for a substantial global disease burden in pig-raising and pork-consuming regions of the developing world. The study assessed the reported spatial pattern of Taenia solium taeniosis and cysticercosis (TSTC) in Kenya, with the focus on risk mapping of TSTC in Busia County.
METHODOLOGY: The study employed a mixed approach, incorporating routinely collected data and open-source resources. A literature review and collection of pig population data were used to map the TSTC and pig population distribution at the national level. In Busia County, the retrospec

Bovine cysticercosis, an infection in cattle caused by the zoonotic tapeworm Taenia saginata, leads to considerable global economic losses. The reported prevalence of bovine cysticercosis in Ethiopia has, until now, been underestimated due to the low sensitivity of meat inspection. This study aimed to estimate the true prevalence of bovine cysticercosis in two Ethiopian abattoirs, and evaluate the diagnostic performance of routine meat inspection, predilection-site dissection and Antigen-ELISA. A cross-sectional study was conducted and a Bayesian Latent Class Model was used to estimate the tru

Taenia saginata and Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato negatively impact cattle production due to the parasitism of their larval forms, known as Cysticercus bovis and hydatid cysts, respectively. In this study, we determined the prevalence and risk factors associated with C. bovis and hydatid cyst infections in cattle slaughtered in the state of Pernambuco, Northeastern Brazil. A total of 2035 post-mortem inspections were conducted in five different slaughterhouses. We collected tissue and organ fragments with structures morphologically resembling C. bovis and hydatid cysts, and processed hist

Cysticercosis is a parasitic infection caused by Cysticercus, the metacestode (larval stage) of Taenia spp. This case report describes the gross and histopathological findings of acute visceral cysticercosis associated with Cysticercus tenuicollis in a Black Bengal goat with a history of sudden recumbency and death. Striking gross lesions were observed in the liver, which displayed multifocal to coalescing, tortuous hemorrhagic cords of variable length throughout and over the surface, along with a substantial number of wandering immature cysticerci. In the lungs, well-demarcated, dark red, irr

Taeniasis, primarily caused by Taenia solium or Taenia saginata, is the most common zoonotic infection affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Although appendicitis related to this parasitic infection is rare, it represents an important differential diagnosis in patients presenting with abdominal pain. This case report highlights a unique case of appendicitis associated with Taenia infestation, emphasizing the need for clinical awareness of potential parasitic origins in appendicitis. A 35-year-old Ethiopian female, non-diabetic and non-hypertensive, presented with a one-day history of moderate

We report a case of acute appendicitis secondary to Taenia saginata infection. A young male presented with 17-hour migratory right lower quadrant pain. He had long-term residency in an agro-pastoral area and habits of consuming unboiled water and raw meat. Physical examination showed positive peritoneal irritation signs. Routine blood tests revealed elevated white blood cell count and normal eosinophil count; fecal routine was unremarkable. Abdominal ultrasound suggested acute appendicitis. Intraoperatively, the appendix was congested and edematous, with its tip wrapped by the greater omentum

The wolf (Canis lupus) is an apex predator with high mobility and trophic plasticity, serving as a valuable indicator of helminth transmission at the wildlife-livestock interface. Given the ecological overlap between wolves and both wild and domestic ungulates in Romania, we aimed to identify and molecularly characterize cestodes from wolves' small intestines. Between November 2022 and June 2025, small intestines from nine wolves were collected across four Romanian counties, frozen, and examined using classical parasitology (macroscopic and microscopic) and molecular methods (PCR amplification

Taenia crassiceps is a cestode capable of causing severe and atypical cysticercosis in accidental intermediate hosts, including domestic dogs. Here we report a fatal disseminated T. crassiceps infection (cystiscercosis) in a 4-year-old castrated male German Shepherd from Poland that had been undergoing long-term prednisone therapy for Addison's disease. The dog developed multiple soft subcutaneous nodules containing numerous asexually proliferating cysticerci. Necropsy revealed extensive dissemination of larvae throughout the subcutis and the thoracic and abdominal cavities, accompanied by ser

Taeniasis is a parasitic infection in humans by tapeworm species typically acquired through the ingestion of undercooked pork or beef leading to infections with Taenia solium, Taenia asiatica or Taenia saginata. We reported a case of taeniasis in a young man of Chinese nationality who presented with recurrent episodes of expelling proglottids. He was at risk due to his preference for consuming undercooked beef. He remained asymptomatic and his physical examination was unremarkable. A 330 cm tapeworm was recovered; each mature proglottid contained 12-30 primary lateral uterine branches. Stool e

BACKGROUND: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) disproportionately affect the poorest populations. To meet the 2030 World Health Organization (WHO) roadmap targets, integrated and cross-cutting approaches are recommended to streamline programmatic operations across NTDs. Integration is not a new concept. But given recent policy shifts, disruptions to programmes and funding constraints, it is increasingly important. We consider integration as opportunities for coordination or collaboration across NTDs. Research is needed to identify the criteria and requirements necessary for successful programm

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a common parasitic infection of the central nervous system (CNS) by the larval stage of Taenia solium. We present a case of an unresponsive 32-year-old man who was found outside a steel manufacturing factory, taken to the emergency department by the police, and then declared dead. There were no external injuries apparent at autopsy; however, internal examination revealed a basilar skull fracture, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and multiple cystic lesions in the brain. NCC was confirmed by histopathological examination, which revealed cysticerci at different stages of deve

Parasitic infections continue to receive little attention in research and health care policy, despite their high prevalence and potential to cause serious neurological complications. For instance, neurocysticercosis, caused by the larval form of Taenia solium, is a leading cause of acquired epilepsy in endemic areas, affecting more than 2 million people worldwide. Toxoplasma gondii, a widespread protozoan parasite, has been linked to behavioral changes, mental health disorders, and an increased risk of schizophrenia, especially in individuals with prior exposure. Importantly, Toxoplasma infect
