Autoimmune sensorineural hearing loss/Meniere's disease possibly triggered by neurocysticercosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Meniere's disease arises when an abnormal fluid accumulation results in heightened pressure within the inner ear or labyrinth. Its symptoms encompass vertigo, tinnitus, hearing loss, and a sensation of fullness in the ear. Various triggers for Meniere's disease are known, from smoking and alcohol consumption to recent viral illnesses, allergies, and anxiety. Meniere's disease presenting as a postinfectious inflammatory condition secondary to parasitic disease is unknown. CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old Hispanic male patient, native to southern Honduras, presented with dizziness a

Pediatric Neurocysticercosis. Burden of pediatric neurological disorders in resource-limited regions.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is caused by the parasitic tapeworm Taenia solium, which frequently infects the central nervous system of children and adults. Diagnosis involves a thorough medical history, with an emphasis on the epidemiological conditions of the affected individuals. Understanding the parasite's life cycle and the host's immune response is for a deeper comprehension of their mutual interaction. The most common clinical manifestations include seizures, headaches, increased intracranial pressure, cranial nerve involvement, cognitive dysfunction, radicular and spinal compression sympto

The neurocysticercosis puzzle: A case of chronic cephalalgia and hydrocephalus.

Neurocysticercosis (NC) is the most common helminthic CNS infection, primarily affecting individuals from endemic regions. We present the case of a 33-year-old Peruvian woman, who had been residing in Spain for over a decade, who experienced recurrent episodes of severe headache, vertigo, and diplopia. Initial evaluations revealed tetraventricular hydrocephalus with unclear etiology. Over the course of a year, she underwent multiple hospitalizations, being diagnosed with retinal toxoplasmosis. Serological testing revealed Taenia solium IgG antibodies. Despite inconclusive neuroimaging, she was

Mitochondrial genome characterization and phylogenetic position of a putative taeniid tapeworm (Taenia sp. QH-2023) isolated from Pseudois nayaur.

Pseudois nayaur (blue sheep), a second-class nationally protected species in China, inhabits the western regions of the country. During a cause-of-death investigation of P. nayaur, an unidentified cysticercus was discovered in the lung of a deceased P. nayaur. Using molecular and bioinformatics approaches, the mitochondrial (mt) genome and phylogenetic position of the parasite were characterized. The mt genome comprises 13,507 bp and encodes 12 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNAs, and 2 rRNAs. Sequence analysis revealed a strong AT bias and codon usage preference typical of taeniid cestodes.

Validated cost-effective casein-based blocking buffers for enhanced neurocysticercosis ELISA accuracy.

Accurate and affordable diagnostic tools are essential for managing neurocysticercosis, a parasitic infection of the central nervous system. In indirect ELISA, blocking buffers are crucial to prevent background noise and ensure reliable results, yet few studies have compared their performance in this specific context. This study assessed nine blocking solutions, four commercial and five prepared in-Lab, using an indirect ELISA with crude Cysticercus cellulosae antigen and a panel of 30 human serum samples (14 positive, 16 negative). By keeping all other variables constant, isolated the impact

Confirmation of a hyperendemic focus of porcine cysticercosis in Northern Uganda: Prevalence and risk factor analysis.

BACKGROUND: Taenia solium (T. solium), a neglected zoonotic tapeworm transmitted between humans and pigs, is a leading cause of acquired epilepsy in endemic areas where it is propagated by poor sanitation and pig husbandry practices. The World Health Organisation (WHO) NTD roadmap 2021-2030, recommended that targeted control interventions need to be initiated, and intensified in T. solium hyperendemic areas. Geospatial risk maps have identified Northern Uganda as a potential hyperendemic area. This study aimed to validate these findings and provide contextual evidence to support design and imp

Nanosuspensions of fenbendazole and ivermectin induce parasite death and low inflammatory response in experimental neurocysticercosis.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is the most common preventable infectious disease of the central nervous system (CNS) worldwide. Its treatment is performed with anthelmintics, albendazole, or praziquantel, associated with corticosteroids due to the intense inflammatory response after the parasite's death. Also, the current treatment does not achieve full parasitic clearance and as it is used for over 40 years, there are a few reports on parisitic resistance and drug refractoriness. Other anthelminthic drugs in their commercial or nanoformulation form may present important activity against cysticerci

Synergistic interaction between praziquantel and oxfendazole or fenbendazole in a murine cysticercosis model.

Up to date, the pharmacological treatment for active neurocysticercosis (NCC) includes only two drugs, praziquantel and albendazole; however, the clinical response is not always successful, due to its low bioavailability; therefore, new approaches are needed. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the pharmacological interaction between praziquantel (PZQ) and oxfendazole (OXF) in vitro; also, the drug-drug interaction between PZQ and OXF or fenbendazole (FBZ) in vivo using Taenia crassiceps metacestode was assessed. For the in vitro study, the surface of synergistic interaction (SSI) ana

Long-Term Neuroimaging Findings in a Murine Model of Human Extraparenchymal Neurocysticercosis.

Neurocysticercosis is caused by the establishment of Taenia solium cysticerci in the central nervous system. The extraparenchymal form (ExP-NCC) is the most severe clinical presentation that may remain asymptomatic for years. Current treatment involves cysticidal drugs (albendazole and/or praziquantel) combined with glucocorticoids to manage the associated neuroinflammation; however, only ∼30% of patients respond effectively. This highlights the need to improve therapeutic strategies. Herein, the experimental murine model of human ExP-NCC was further characterized to improve its usefulness in

High genetic variability in Taenia multiceps larvae: A mitochondrial DNA-based study of sheep isolates using CO1 and NADH1 genes.

Coenurus cerebralis, the larval stage of Taenia multiceps, is a significant parasitic threat to small ruminants, yet its molecular diversity remains underexplored in many endemic regions. This study investigated the genetic variability of C. cerebralis from sheep in Elazig province, Türkiye, by analyzing mitochondrial CO1 (812 bp) and NADH1 (498 bp) gene regions. Sequence data from 39 isolates confirmed the presence of T. multiceps, with 21 CO1 and 17 NADH1 haplotypes identified over half of which were singletons. Most polymorphic sites were parsimony-informative, indicating meaningful evoluti
