Olfactory dysfunction among gas station employees exposed to fuel vapors using digital odor identification testing.

Gas station employees are chronically exposed to fuel vapors containing benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX), and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs), raising occupational concerns about olfactory function. In this cross-sectional study, 116 Brazilian gas station employees (86 men and 30 women; median age, 37.5 years; range, 19-58) completed a questionnaire and underwent objective olfactory assessment with the MultiScent-20 digital odor identification test. Overall, 58.6% had olfactory dysfunction, including 46.6% with hyposmia and 12.1% with anosmia, whereas only 23.3% report

Biallelic PAX6 Variants in an Adult With Severe Microphthalmia and Preserved Intellectual Function.

PAX6 encodes a dosage-sensitive transcription factor that is essential for eye development. Heterozygous PAX6 disease is well characterized, but biallelic disease is extremely rare and has been associated with anophthalmia, severe brain malformations, and perinatal lethality. Here we report the first adult patient with biallelic pathogenic PAX6 variants and describe a novel phenotype that includes severe microphthalmia, anosmia, and autism spectrum disorder, Level 1. Notably, intellectual function was preserved. Genome sequencing revealed compound heterozygosity for the missense variant c.622C

A Cross-Sectional Study of Patient Views on Acceptability of Olfactory Implants.

OBJECTIVES: Unlike other chronic conditions, effective therapies for smell and taste disorders (SATDs) remain scarce. Olfactory implants are an emerging area of therapy aimed at restoring the sense of smell through electrical stimulation of the olfactory pathway. This survey aimed to assess patient opinions and the acceptability of olfactory implants, including willingness to undergo surgery, as well as factors influencing their decision-making process. DESIGN AND SETTING: This was a cross-sectional survey consisting of two online questionnaires circulated via the charity SmellTaste, explorin

Recurring and isolated intronic FGFR1 variants as an underdiagnosed cause of congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.

BACKGROUND: Congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (CHH) is a genetically heterogeneous disorder characterized by absent or delayed puberty and infertility due to gonadotropin-releasing hormone deficiency. While loss-of-function variants in FGFR1 are the most commonly known genetic cause of CHH, diagnostic screening typically focuses on coding exons, potentially overlooking pathogenic variants in noncoding regions. METHODS: We investigated 4 unrelated families with CHH. Family 1 included a mother and 3 daughters presenting with variable reproductive phenotypes and incomplete penetrance of a

Olfactory dysfunction and submicroscopic abnormalities: unveiling hidden pathologies.

Recent advances in high-resolution genomic technologies have revealed that several syndromes are associated with submicroscopic chromosomal deletions and, less frequently, duplications, thereby substantially contributing to the functional annotation of the human genome. Among these structural variants, recurrent microdeletions or microduplications often disrupt dosage-sensitive genes, leading to shared phenotypic outcomes in affected individuals. While features such as congenital heart defects, neurodevelopmental delays, and intellectual disability (ID) have been extensively studied, phenotype

Association Between COVID-19 Vaccine Doses and Neurosensory Symptoms Among COVID-19-Positive Patients: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Ageusia and anosmia are common manifestations of COVID-19. This study examined whether their frequency among infected patients was associated with the recorded number of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine doses; it was not designed to estimate causality or vaccine effectiveness. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional analysis of 5,348 COVID-19-positive patients over five years of age followed by the San Miguelito Health Region, Panama, from July 7, 2021, through November 2, 2022. Unvaccinated patients and vaccinated patients whose recorded doses were exclusively Pfizer-BioNTec

Comparing two case definitions for including severe acute respiratory infection patients in influenza and COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness studies among older adults using the test-negative design: VEBIS hospital network, seven European countries, 2023/24.

INTRODUCTION: Two severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) case definitions (CDs) are often used in test-negative design (TND) hospital-based vaccine effectiveness (VE) studies. SARI-CD1 requires ≥1 symptom (cough, fever, shortness of breath, anosmia, ageusia, or dysgeusia); SARI-CD2 requires both fever and cough. Using VEBIS hospital network end-of-season 2023/24 data, we compared the effect of these CDs on influenza and COVID-19 VE estimates in Europe. METHODS: Using the TND, we restricted analysis to seven countries recruiting patients using SARI-CD1; we created a subset of SARI patients

GLP-1 Receptor Agonists in Dentistry: Promise, Pitfalls, and Evidence Gaps.

GLP-1RAs (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists) have become one of the fastest-growing drug classes worldwide, with prescriptions for obesity treatment increasing by 587% from 2019 to 2024. While their metabolic and cardiovascular benefits are well established, the implications for oral health remain largely unexamined. Preclinical evidence consistently demonstrates anti-inflammatory and osteoprotective effects on periodontal and peri-implant tissues: GLP-1RAs promote osteogenic differentiation of periodontal ligament stem cells, reduce alveolar bone resorption in animal models of periodo

Cognitive assessment of patients with post-COVID olfactory dysfunction and impaired domains.

BACKGROUND: Persistent olfactory dysfunction is a common symptom of post-COVID syndrome (PCS), particularly among younger patients who experienced mild COVID-19. Recent functional neuroimaging studies suggest that persistent olfactory impairment may be associated with cognitive deficits. However, few studies have characterised cognition in this subgroup using standardised neuropsychological assessment. OBJECTIVES: To assess the prevalence of cognitive deficits and their characteristics in patients with persistent post-COVID olfactory symptoms. METHODS: This multicentre study included 55 pati

Unusual location of sinonasal ossifying fibroma of the posterior ethmoid sinus: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Ossifying fibroma is a benign, well-demarcated fibro-osseous neoplasm that most commonly affects the mandible and maxilla. Involvement of the paranasal sinuses is rare, and ethmoid sinus localization is particularly uncommon. Because sinonasal ossifying fibroma may mimic other fibro-osseous and osseous lesions radiologically, histopathologic confirmation and complete excision are important for diagnosis and disease control. CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old Saudi man with well-controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus presented with a 6-month history of progressive right

Facial Nerve Palsy With Olfactory and Gustatory Dysfunction Following COVID-19 Infection: An Illustrative Case-Based Narrative Review.

COVID-19 infection has been recognized to induce a wide range of neurological manifestations, ranging in severity from transient, benign manifestations to severe neurological deficits. Cranial nerve involvement, particularly facial, olfactory, and gustatory nerve dysfunction, has emerged as a notable clinical feature in affected individuals. This review article aims to present and analyze three confirmed COVID-19 diagnoses that exhibited facial nerve palsy (FNP), olfactory disturbances (OD), and/or gustatory disturbances (GD), while also exploring the potential underlying pathophysiological me

Adherence to healthy plant-rich diets is associated with better olfactory function in the general population - Findings from the Cooperative Health Research in South Tyrol (CHRIS) study.

Olfactory dysfunction is associated with increased all-cause mortality among older adults and an early indicator of brain aging. Different lifestyle factors and health conditions determine olfactory function, however, there is limited knowledge on the association with diet quality. We investigated the association between various dietary patterns and olfactory function, as well as hyposmia, in a general population study using cross-sectional data from 6690 participants of the Cooperative Health Research in South Tyrol (CHRIS) study. We assessed self-reported dietary intake through the GA2LEN se

Olfactory impairment and probable REM sleep behavior disorder in Parkinson's disease: clinical relevance to the single- and dual-hit hypotheses.

BACKGROUND: Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) and olfactory impairment are common prodromal features of Parkinson's disease (PD), but the implications of their coexistence remain uncertain. The dual-hit hypothesis proposes concomitant olfactory and enteric involvement, whereas the revised single-hit framework proposes predominantly brain-first or body-first routes. We examined whether probable RBD (pRBD)/anosmia-defined subgroups exhibit distinct clinical profiles. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 201 individuals with PD underwent olfactory, cognitive, motor, non-m

[Congenital anosmia : a practical diagnostic approach].

Congenital anosmia is a rare disorder defined by the absence of the sense of smell since birth. It can mostly be an isolated condition or more rarely part of a syndromic presentation, such as Kallmann syndrome, which predominantly affects males. Diagnosis relies on a targeted medical history, an ENT examination including nasal endoscopy, validated psychophysical olfactory testing and MRI focused on the olfactory pathways. Endocrine and genetic investigations should be guided by associated clinical features. As there is no validated curative treatment, management relies on patient education, pr

Failure to track a stable AMOC state under rapid climate change.

Persistent olfactory dysfunction (OD) is the second most common symptom of post coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) now being termed long-COVID. Its prevalence after recovery from COVID-19 is estimated to be 12% after nearly 6 months of follow-up. It thus becomes imperative for the treating clinicians to update themselves with the pathophysiology of this post COVID disability as well as the tools for diagnosis and the available treatment options. A systematic literature search was performed as per PRISMA guidelines in MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, LILACS, Google Scholar, ClinicalTrials.gov, and med
