Unusual location of sinonasal ossifying fibroma of the posterior ethmoid sinus: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Ossifying fibroma is a benign, well-demarcated fibro-osseous neoplasm that most commonly affects the mandible and maxilla. Involvement of the paranasal sinuses is rare, and ethmoid sinus localization is particularly uncommon. Because sinonasal ossifying fibroma may mimic other fibro-osseous and osseous lesions radiologically, histopathologic confirmation and complete excision are important for diagnosis and disease control. CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old Saudi man with well-controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus presented with a 6-month history of progressive right

Facial Nerve Palsy With Olfactory and Gustatory Dysfunction Following COVID-19 Infection: An Illustrative Case-Based Narrative Review.

COVID-19 infection has been recognized to induce a wide range of neurological manifestations, ranging in severity from transient, benign manifestations to severe neurological deficits. Cranial nerve involvement, particularly facial, olfactory, and gustatory nerve dysfunction, has emerged as a notable clinical feature in affected individuals. This review article aims to present and analyze three confirmed COVID-19 diagnoses that exhibited facial nerve palsy (FNP), olfactory disturbances (OD), and/or gustatory disturbances (GD), while also exploring the potential underlying pathophysiological me

Adherence to healthy plant-rich diets is associated with better olfactory function in the general population - Findings from the Cooperative Health Research in South Tyrol (CHRIS) study.

Olfactory dysfunction is associated with increased all-cause mortality among older adults and an early indicator of brain aging. Different lifestyle factors and health conditions determine olfactory function, however, there is limited knowledge on the association with diet quality. We investigated the association between various dietary patterns and olfactory function, as well as hyposmia, in a general population study using cross-sectional data from 6690 participants of the Cooperative Health Research in South Tyrol (CHRIS) study. We assessed self-reported dietary intake through the GA2LEN se

Olfactory impairment and probable REM sleep behavior disorder in Parkinson's disease: clinical relevance to the single- and dual-hit hypotheses.

BACKGROUND: Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) and olfactory impairment are common prodromal features of Parkinson's disease (PD), but the implications of their coexistence remain uncertain. The dual-hit hypothesis proposes concomitant olfactory and enteric involvement, whereas the revised single-hit framework proposes predominantly brain-first or body-first routes. We examined whether probable RBD (pRBD)/anosmia-defined subgroups exhibit distinct clinical profiles. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 201 individuals with PD underwent olfactory, cognitive, motor, non-m

[Congenital anosmia : a practical diagnostic approach].

Congenital anosmia is a rare disorder defined by the absence of the sense of smell since birth. It can mostly be an isolated condition or more rarely part of a syndromic presentation, such as Kallmann syndrome, which predominantly affects males. Diagnosis relies on a targeted medical history, an ENT examination including nasal endoscopy, validated psychophysical olfactory testing and MRI focused on the olfactory pathways. Endocrine and genetic investigations should be guided by associated clinical features. As there is no validated curative treatment, management relies on patient education, pr

Failure to track a stable AMOC state under rapid climate change.

Persistent olfactory dysfunction (OD) is the second most common symptom of post coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) now being termed long-COVID. Its prevalence after recovery from COVID-19 is estimated to be 12% after nearly 6 months of follow-up. It thus becomes imperative for the treating clinicians to update themselves with the pathophysiology of this post COVID disability as well as the tools for diagnosis and the available treatment options. A systematic literature search was performed as per PRISMA guidelines in MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, LILACS, Google Scholar, ClinicalTrials.gov, and med

Effectiveness of a Modified Transsellar Approach with Planum Sphenoidale Removal for Pituitary Neuroendocrine Tumors with Anterosuperior Extension.

Background/Objectives: Achieving gross total resection is crucial in the surgical management of pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNETs). However, PitNETs with anterosuperior extension remain challenging to completely remove using the conventional transsellar approach (TSA) due to limited access to the anterior suprasellar region. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of a modified TSA (mTSA) that involves additional removal of the tuberculum sellae and planum sphenoidale (PS) bones without expanding the dural incision. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 104 patients with nonfunction

Pleiotropic genes linking congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and cleft lip/palate: evidence from a genomic CHH cohort study.

Congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (CHH) is a rare and genetically heterogeneous disorder characterized by absent or incomplete puberty due to impaired gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) function. A subset of individuals with CHH also present with developmental anomalies, including midline defects such as cleft lip and/or palate (CLP). This study investigates the genetic overlap between CHH and CLP. A total of 336 individuals diagnosed with CHH were clinically assessed for associated phenotypes, including CLP. High-throughput sequencing was performed using a targeted gene panel encomp

Rapid Improvement of COVID-Related Anosmia Following Electroconvulsive Therapy: A Report of 2 Cases.

We present 2 cases of patients who received electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for psychotic depression and catatonia, respectively. Both patients had previously been diagnosed with COVID-related anosmia. Following the first ECT session, the patients reported a significant improvement in their sense of smell, preceding the resolution of depressive and catatonic symptoms. There is a growing body of literature regarding the relationship between psychiatric illness and olfactory dysfunction. Furthermore, considering the neurogenesis hypothesis of ECT, the olfactory bulb is the only brain structure a

Pregnancy in a woman with Kallmann-De Morsier syndrome: A case report.

Kallmann syndrome is characterized by the combination of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and anosmia. It is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous disorder. We report the case of ovarian stimulation in a woman with Kallmann-De Morsier syndrome, resulting in a pregnancy achieved through insemination, which progressed to term. The patient underwent cesarean section for a contracted pelvis and delivered a live female infant. Drawing upon a review of the literature on Kallmann-De Morsier syndrome, we discuss the role of follicle-stimulating hormone during the follicular phase, as well as criteri

Two-stage approach for olfactory groove meningioma.

A 51-year-old female presented with an olfactory groove meningioma causing seizures, confusion, and anosmia. Large tumor size and frontal lobe edema can complicate resection in a single-stage craniotomy and lead to brain injury secondary to intraoperative retraction. Moreover, complete resection by the endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) alone is not feasible given the lateral extent of the tumor. A two-stage resection with a transcribriform transplanum EEA, followed by a fronto-temporo-parietal craniotomy 4.5 months later, was performed. The EEA allows for initial decompression, devasculariza

Clinical and Immunological Perspectives on the Nasal Microbiome's Role in Olfactory Function and Dysfunction.

The nasal microbiome represents a complex and dynamic microbial ecosystem that contributes to mucosal defense, epithelial homeostasis, immune regulation, and olfactory function. Increasing evidence indicates that this microbial community actively interacts with host physiology, while alterations in its composition are associated with chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and olfactory impairment. Such changes have been reported in conditions including chronic rhinosinusitis, allergic rhinitis, and post-viral anosmia. Beyond local effects, chronic nasal inflammation has been hypothesized to i
