Background: Olfactory and gustatory disturbances are commonly overlooked symptoms but may be linked to various health conditions, including cancer. Emerging evidence suggests that these sensory impairments could be early indicators of lung cancer, particularly in individuals with sleep disorders, a group already at elevated cancer risk due to factors like circadian disruption and hormonal changes. Objective: To evaluate whether olfactory and gustatory disturbances can serve as early markers for lung cancer in patients with sleep disorders. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed us

OBJECTIVES: With the increasing use of GLP-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA) drugs for weight loss and diabetes management, concerns have been raised regarding their potential side effects. We aim to assess the frequency of otolaryngologic adverse events (AEs).
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of national registry.
METHODS: The Food and Drug Administration's Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database was queried for events related to the GLP-1 RA: exenatide, liraglutide, dulaglutide, semaglutide, and tirzepatide from 1 year after their approval until the end of 2023. AEs were collected

Respiration shapes brain activity and synchronizes sensory and exploratory motor actions, with some evidence suggesting that it also affects pupil size. However, evidence for a coupling between respiration and pupil size remains scarce and inconclusive, hindered by small sample sizes and limited controls. Given the importance of pupil size in visual perception and as a reflection of brain state, understanding its relationship with respiration is essential. In five experiments using a pre-registered protocol, we systematically investigated how respiratory phase affects pupil size across differe

Anosmia, the complete loss of olfactory perception, has been associated with sensory compensation in non-chemical senses such as vision and hearing, but its relationship with tactile perception remains unclear. This study investigates whether isolated congenital anosmia (ICA)-a rare condition in which individuals are born without a sense of smell but are otherwise healthy-is linked to heightened self-reported tactile sensitivity compared to healthy controls. Drawing on sensory compensation theory and anecdotal evidence from related studies, we hypothesized that individuals with ICA would repor

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a prevalent health condition associated with numerous complications, including olfactory and taste dysfunction, and malnutrition. This systematic review focused on dysgeusia, smell disorders and malnutrition in CKD patients. The search included scientific databases such as PubMed, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Science, as well as sources of grey literature. Quality assessment and risk of bias were evaluated using JBI guidelines, while the certainty of evidence was assessed with the Oxford Centre methods. Seven studies were included: two focusing o

INTRODUCTION: Few studies have characterized the association of olfaction with dementia in detail across diverse sociodemographic subgroups.
METHODS: We examined the association of one-time-point olfactory status with incident dementia overall and by age, race, sex, and apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 status (n = 4470, mean age: 75 ± 5 years, 21% Black), and 5-year olfactory change with incident dementia (n = 2658) in the community-based Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study.
RESULTS: Compared to good olfaction, moderate olfaction (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.53, 95% confidence interval [CI]:

OBJECTIVE: Despite the relatively high prevalence of Lewy body disease (LBD) in over middle-aged people, physicians and patients show poor awareness of early symptoms. We examined the clinical utility of a simple checklist for screening for the early symptoms of LBD.
METHODS: We administered a 7-item screening checklist assessing the five representative early symptoms of LBD (dizziness, constipation, anosmia, REM sleep behavior disorder, and depression: the acronym is "DCARD") to 450 consecutive individuals who visited the memory clinic at our university hospital. The aim of this retrospectiv

BACKGROUND: Olfactory dysfunction (OD) and gustatory dysfunction (GD) are common among adults, with prevalence increasing significantly in older age groups. Both dysfunctions have negative effects on appetite, nutrition, social functioning and even environmental safety. OD and GD frequently coexist, indicating a possible close association between these conditions. At present, there is a lack of large-sample epidemiological studies on the relationship between OD and GD. Our study aims to investigate the relationship between OD and GD using both measurement and questionnaire data from the 2013-2

Olfactory dysfunction (OD) has become increasingly prevalent since the COVID-19 pandemic, yet effective treatments remain limited. In recent years, anecdotal reports have emerged on the potential benefits of serotonergic psychedelics (lysergic acid diethylamide [LSD], psilocybin, etc.) in improving OD. To date, only one case series in the medical literature has documented this phenomenon. This study aimed to explore the potential therapeutic effects of psychedelics on OD by conducting a thematic analysis of online posts from people with self-reported OD discussing whether psychedelic use affec

Odontogenic sinusitis is classified as a localized, secondary form of the paranasal sinus inflammation, in which odontogenic focus, foreign body and/or any surgical intervention violating the Schneiderian membrane may be found in the background. Rhinosinusitis is defined by at least two from the symptoms of nasal blockage, anterior or posterior nasal discharge, facial discomfort/pain, loss of smell and typical alterations with nasal endoscopy. Acute rhinosinusitis seems to be infectious, while the chronic phenotype shows immunopathological signs of primary, diffuse bilateral disease. Acute and

Hyposmia is one of the most prevalent non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease and antecedes motor dysfunction by up to a decade. However, the underlying pathophysiology remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the mechanisms of dopamine metabolism in post-mortem olfactory bulbs from ten Parkinson's disease and ten neurologic control subjects. In contrast to the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the midbrain, we observed an increase in tyrosine hydroxylase-positive neurons in the Parkinson's disease olfactory bulb, suggesting a potential role for dopamine in the hyposmia associ

Kallmann syndrome is a rare genetic disease characterized by the idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism with hyposmia or anosmia, which exhibits considerable heterogeneity in genotype and phenotype. Herein, we reported a 32-year-old male patient with Kallmann syndrome in a family associated with heterozygous mutations in PROKR2 and SPRY4 genes. The genotyping results indicated PROKR2 mutations and SPRY4 variants of uncertain significance, which might be incompletely penetrant in this family.

Oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) is a prevalent issue in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. This study aimed to determine swallowing abnormalities in post-COVID-19 patients with OD and to determine the potential risk factors of aspiration in patients who have recovered from COVID-19. Screening for OD was done for 310 patients who were discharged from the main university isolation hospital during the study period. A longitudinal descriptive study was carried out on 127 adult post-COVID-19 patients between the ages of 24 and 65 years who failed OD screening at the time of discharge. Instrumental swallo

BACKGROUND: It is known that COVID-19 causes brain damage in the acute phase and leads to neurological complications such as dementia and brain fog in the chronic phase. Many factors have been implicated in these complications, including glymphatic system disorders, small vessel disease, and widespread inflammation. Peak width of skeletonized mean diffusivity (PSMD) is a sensitive biomarker for SVD, while the diffusion tensor image analysis along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) measures glymphatic system function. This study aims to investigate changes in PSMD and DTI-ALPS parameters in COVI

OBJECTIVE: Parkinson's Disease (PD) manifests with both motor and non-motor symptoms, with non-motor symptoms often appearing first. The link between non-motor symptoms, particularly depression, and olfactory dysfunction, and substantia nigra (SN) subregions has been studied less. By utilizing Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), we investigated the associations between microstructural patterns in the SN's subregions and motor and non-motor symptoms in patients with PD, including those without evident dopaminergic deficits, compared to healthy controls (HC).
METHODS: Complete baseline demographic

Kallmann syndrome (KS) is an idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism with anosmia due to isolated gonadotropin-releasing hormone deficiency. In females, the diagnosis often occurs around age 15 due to primary amenorrhea, prompting hormone replacement therapy (HRT) initiation. However, limited data exists on the effectiveness of delayed HRT in females with KS. Here, we describe a case involving a female with KS who began treatment at the age of 27. Following HRT initiation, the patient showed increases in uterine size, bone mineral density, and growth of breasts over a two-year period. Delayed
