Experts' content validation of the parosmia, phantosmia, and anosmia test (PARPHAIT): A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The parosmia, phantosmia, and anosmia test (PARPHAIT) has previously been developed as a tool for capturing quantitative and qualitative symptoms of olfactory dysfunction. Its content validity was evaluated in a patient sample, from a statistical point of view through an exploratory factor analysis, and now in a panel of experts. Based on these evaluations, we present the most recent version. The aim of this study was to evaluate the content of the novel PARPHAIT in an expert panel. METHODS: This was a qualitative interview study with experts in the field of olfaction. The study w

Platelet-Rich Plasma for Posttraumatic Olfactory Dysfunction: Preliminary Report of 33 Patients.

The platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection into the olfactory clefts has been suggested as an effective treatment for long-lasting post-viral olfactory dysfunction (OD). Currently, no prospective clinical studies have been conducted in other OD etiologies. In this preliminary study, the PRP injection outcomes were investigated in 33 posttraumatic OD patients (19 females; mean duration: 55.6 ± 45.1 months), and olfactory outcomes were compared with those of patients adhering to an olfactory training (OT). Following PRP injection, 66.7% of posttraumatic patients reported subjective improvement. Th

Subjective Olfactory Impairment in a Patient Undergoing Anti-Obesity Pharmacotherapy: A Case of Symptom-Test Discrepancy.

With the growing use of anti-obesity medications (AOMs), particularly glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, interest in their impact on chemosensory function has increased. We report a case of subjective olfactory discomfort that developed during AOM therapy despite normal objective test results. A 41-year-old woman received the GLP-1 receptor agonist semaglutide for 24 weeks. Thorough olfactory function evaluation was performed using the Questionnaire of Olfactory Disorders (a validated questionnaire), the Yonsei Olfactory Function Test (for psychophysical testing), and chemical

Evaluation of anterior olfactory nucleus changes on magnetic resonance imaging: could it be a game changer in smell disorders?

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate morphological and signal changes of the anterior olfactory nucleus (AON) on high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with olfactory dysfunction (OD) of varying aetiologies. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 135 patients with post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), post-viral, or post-traumatic OD was conducted. High-resolution MRI was used to assess AON signal intensity and area, as well as olfactory bulb (OB) morphology. Clinical evaluation included Threshold (T), Discrimination (D), and Identification (I) scores and the pr

Effects of olfactory training on patients with parosmia.

Olfactory training (OT) has shown efficacy in improving quantitative olfactory loss (hyposmia), However, its effects on qualitative disorders (parosmia) and the corresponding neural changes remain underexplored. This study aimed to compare the behavioral and neural effects of OT in patients with hyposmia and parosmia using chemosensory event-related potentials (CSERP). Forty-four patients with olfactory dysfunction and twenty-one healthy controls were initially recruited. After accounting for dropouts and exclusions, twenty-two patients (hyposmia: n = 9; parosmia: n = 13) and twenty healthy co

Real-World Outcomes of 3-Month Olfactory Training on Post-COVID-19 Parosmia.

INTRODUCTION: Post-COVID-19 parosmia can be protracted and psychologically distressing. The effect of olfactory training (OT) on parosmia is still unclear. The primary objective was to investigate the effect of 3 months of OT on COVID-19-related parosmia. The secondary objectives were to study whether improvement in olfactory quantitative function and compliance to OT influenced improvement in parosmia. METHODS: This prospective cohort study was conducted from October 5, 2022, to February 7, 2023, at a tertiary smell and taste clinic. Patients with persistent post-COVID-19 parosmia were instr

Evaluation and management of chemosensory, trigeminal, and salivary dysfunctions in patients with post coronavirus disease.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: While the management of olfactory disorders among patients with post Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) is well elucidated, treatment of taste dysfunction, oral burning, and oral dryness is less extensively studied among post-COVID-19 patients. This prospective study aimed (i) to assess the prevalence of chemosensory, trigeminal, and salivary dysfunctions in patients at two different time points following COVID-19 infection, and (ii) to evaluate the recovery process over time. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 54 Early-post-COVID-19 (3-11 months since COVID-19), 46 Late-p

The impact of persistent COVID-19-related chemosensory dysfunction on quality of life, appetite and hunger: The COVORTS study.

Knowledge of how persistent COVID-19-related chemosensory dysfunction affects quality of life and eating behaviour over time is lacking. The COVORTS cohort included 76 patients with recent (<3 months) COVID-19 infection and persistent self-reported smell dysfunction (>1 month). For one year, patients completed monthly questionnaires on quality of life impairment, appetite and hunger ratings, as well as self-reported and self-assessed chemosensory dysfunction. Psychophysical testing of olfactory and gustatory functioning was performed every 3 months. Our results revealed that quality of life, a

Maximizing safety in the treatment of a large choroidal fissure arteriovenous malformation: The essential role of anatomy, staged embolization, and microsurgical technique.

BACKGROUND: Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are complex congenital pathologies that require a deep understanding of their angioarchitecture and the involved brain anatomy. The ones within the temporal horn of the lateral ventricle present significant challenges for microsurgical treatment due to their deep location and proximity to critical neurovascular structures. These rare AVMs typically manifest with seizures or hemorrhage. They have afferents from the choroidal arteries, with arterial supply often arising from both the anterior and posterior circulations through the choroidal arteries

Discrepancies between subjective and objective olfactory outcomes after FESS in CRSwNP: Predictive factors and clinical implications.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) frequently leads to olfactory dysfunction, prompting patients to seek functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) for improvement. However, predicting postoperative outcomes is challenging due to variability in improvement rates and discrepancies between subjective self-assessments and objective olfactory tests. This study aimed to identify preoperative clinical factors associated with discrepancies between subjective and objective postoperative olfactory outcomes, enabling better patient counseling and result prediction. METHODS: Th
