Effect of Olfactory Training in COVID-19 Related Olfactory Dysfunction-A Placebo-Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVES: Olfactory training is a recommended treatment in patients with olfactory dysfunction after COVID-19. However, the effectiveness of olfactory training in COVID-19-induced olfactory dysfunction has been studied; only a few studies have included a placebo group to compare the effect of traditional olfactory training with odor-free olfactory training. In this randomized placebo-controlled trial, we evaluate the effect of olfactory training with essential oils versus olfactory training with placebo oils in patients with post-COVID-19 olfactory dysfunction. METHODS: Sixty-five patients

Association of Sinonasal Symptoms and Disease With Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are widely used for cancer therapy and are associated with immune-related adverse events (irAEs) in various organ systems. However, data on sinonasal irAEs remain limited. This study investigates the association between ICI therapy and sinonasal conditions, including chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and nasal polyps, using a national health database. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study utilized the TriNetX US Network to analyze adults diagnosed with malignant neoplasms for which ICIs are an accepted treatment option. Patients treated with FDA-a

Olfactory disorder after COVID-19 vaccination.

Planning in orthognathic surgery has been and still is an open issue. We have evolved from 2D classical cephalometric hard-tissue planning to 2D soft tissue planning, and finally to 3D and hard and soft tissue evaluation. This, to our knowledge, is the first description of a new Soft Tissue Plane (STP) and its relationship with the anterior position of the upper incisor (UI). Profile photographs of 110 "attractive individuals" with lips at rest or smiling and with upper incisor shown were used. The photographs used were of 65 professional models from two international agencies and 45 individua

Image-guided treatment of mouse tumours with radioactive ion beams.

BACKGROUND: Sudden smell loss is a specific early symptom of COVID-19, which, prior to the emergence of Omicron, had estimated prevalence of ~40% to 75%. Chemosensory impairments affect physical and mental health, and dietary behavior. Thus, it is critical to understand the rate and time course of smell recovery. The aim of this cohort study was to characterize smell function and recovery up to 11 months post COVID-19 infection. METHODS: This longitudinal survey of individuals suffering COVID-19-related smell loss assessed disease symptoms and gustatory and olfactory function. Participants (n

Diagnosed and subjectively perceived long-term effects of COVID-19 infection on olfactory function assessed by supervised machine learning.

Loss of olfactory function is a typical acute coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) symptom, at least in early variants of SARS-CoV2. The time that has elapsed since the emergence of COVID-19 now allows for assessing the long-term prognosis of its olfactory impact. Participants (n = 722) of whom n = 464 reported having had COVID-19 dating back with a mode of 174 days were approached in a museum as a relatively unbiased environment. Olfactory function was diagnosed by assessing odor threshold and odor identification performance. Subjects also rated their actual olfactory function on an 11-point n

Patient Experience and Preferences for the Assessment of Olfaction: The Patient International Clinical Assessment of Smell Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Olfactory dysfunction (OD) is common and carries significant personal and societal burden of disease. Accurate assessment of olfaction is required for good clinical care and affords patients insight into their condition. However, the accuracy of assessment varies with technique used, and there is presently little standardisation of clinical practice. We therefore aimed to determine experience of and preferences for olfactory assessment in healthcare-seeking adults. METHODS: An anonymous patient co-produced survey was developed in collaboration with a UK-based OD charity. Distrib

Post-COVID-19 patients suffer from chemosensory, trigeminal, and salivary dysfunctions.

Recent literature indicates that post-COVID-19 patients suffer from a plethora of complications, including chemosensory dysfunction. However, little attention has been given to understand the interactions between chemosensory, trigeminal, and salivary dysfunctions in these patients. The aims of this study were (1) to investigate the prevalence and combinations of chemosensory, trigeminal, and salivary dysfunctions, (2) to identify the odorants/tastants that are compromised, and (3) to explore possible associations between the four dysfunctions in post-COVID-19 patients. One hundred post-COVID-

Persistent COVID-19 parosmia and olfactory loss post olfactory training: randomized clinical trial comparing central and peripheral-acting therapeutics.

PURPOSE: Although COVID-19 anosmia is often transient, patients with persistent olfactory dysfunction (pOD) can experience refractory parosmia and diminished smell. This study evaluated four putative therapies for parosmia in patients with chronic COVID-19 olfactory impairment. METHODS: After screening nasal endoscopy, 85 patients (49 female, 58%) with pOD and treatment-refractory parosmia were randomized to: (1) ultramicronized palmitoylethanolamide and luteolin + olfactory training (OT) (umPEALUT group, n = 17), (2) alpha-lipoic acid + OT (ALA group, n = 21), (3) umPEALUT + ALA + OT (combin

The Prognostic Value of Olfactory Dysfunction in Patients with COVID-19: The COVIDORA Study.

BACKGROUND: Among all studies describing COVID-19 clinical features during the first wave of the pandemic, only a few retrospective studies have assessed the correlation between olfac-tory dysfunction (OD) and the evolution of disease severity. The main aim was to assess whether OD is a predictive factor of COVID-19 severity based on the patient's medical management (outpa-tient care, standard hospital admission, and ICU admission). METHODS: A national, prospective, mul-ticenter cohort study was conducted in 20 public hospitals and a public center for COVID-19 screen-ing. During the first wav

Giving a Voice to Patients With Smell Disorders Associated With COVID-19: Cross-Sectional Longitudinal Analysis Using Natural Language Processing of Self-Reports.

BACKGROUND: Smell disorders are commonly reported with COVID-19 infection. The smell-related issues associated with COVID-19 may be prolonged, even after the respiratory symptoms are resolved. These smell dysfunctions can range from anosmia (complete loss of smell) or hyposmia (reduced sense of smell) to parosmia (smells perceived differently) or phantosmia (smells perceived without an odor source being present). Similar to the difficulty that people experience when talking about their smell experiences, patients find it difficult to express or label the symptoms they experience, thereby compl

Long-term olfactory loss post-COVID-19: Pathobiology and potential therapeutic strategies.

An acute loss of smell emerged as a striking symptom present in roughly half of the people infected with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus in the early phases of the COVID-19 pandemic. In most COVID-19 patients, olfaction recovers over the course of a few weeks. However, a lasting partial or complete loss of smell, often associated with distorted olfactory perceptions termed parosmia, has emerged as a widespread problem impacting at least 5%-10% of those who experience anosmia due to COVID-19. Our inability to offer effective therapies to this hyposmic or a
