Neurological and psychiatric complications continue to be a public health concern in long coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This varies from olfactory dysfunctions such as parosmia to cognitive and emotional challenges. Historically, the surge of neurological disorders followed the viral pandemics, for example, the emergence of Encephalitis Lethargica after the outbreak of Spanish Influenza. During and after COVID-19 infection, the problems associated with the sense of smell and the reports of affected olfactory and limbic brain areas are leading to a growing concern about the similarity wi

SCENTinel, a rapid smell test designed to screen for olfactory disorders, including anosmia (no ability to smell an odor) and parosmia (distorted sense of smell), measures 4 components of olfactory function: detection, intensity, identification, and pleasantness. Each test card contains one of 9 odorant mixtures. Some people born with genetic insensitivities to specific odorants (i.e. specific anosmia) may fail the test if they cannot smell an odorant but otherwise have a normal sense of smell. However, using odorant mixtures has largely been found to prevent this from happening. To better und

INTRODUCTION: Olfactory disorders significantly affect individuals, diminishing their capacity to detect dangers, appreciate flavors, and engage socially. Despite their considerable impact on quality of life, these disorders often receive less attention compared to other sensory impairments. This review emphasizes the importance of olfactory function and explores both traditional and innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
AREAS COVERED: This review comprehensively covers the pathophysiology, diagnostic challenges, and treatment options for olfactory disorders. It delves into the nu

BACKGROUND: More than a year after recovering from COVID-19, a large proportion of individuals, many of whom work in the healthcare sector, still report olfactory dysfunctions. However, olfactory dysfunction was common already before the COVID-19 pandemic, making it necessary to also consider the existing baseline prevalence of olfactory dysfunction. To establish the adjusted prevalence of COVID-19 related olfactory dysfunction, we assessed smell function in healthcare workers who had contracted COVID-19 during the first wave of the pandemic using psychophysical testing.
METHODS: Participants

BACKGROUND: Olfactory training (OT) is commonly used for the treatment of olfactory disorders. Nevertheless, there is an ongoing debate about the most effective OT regimen. We aimed to compare the effects of OT with 7 items (rose, lemon, eucalyptus, cloves, stewed apple, balm, mint) to 4-item-OT (rose, lemon, eucalyptus, cloves) over 3 months. Methods: Participants were 40 patients with olfactory dysfunction receiving 4-item-OT or 7-item-OT and 60 gender- and age-matched individuals with normal sense of smell receiving no OT, 4-item-OT, or 7-item-OT. Before and after the OT we assessed n-butan

BACKGROUND: Fortunately, the majority of COVID-19 patients recover from olfactory dysfunction (OD) within the first couple of weeks. However, from approximately 5% up to 20% continue to suffer from OD even more than 1 year after the onset. Nonetheless, factors associated with long-lasting OD are hardly known. The aim of this study was to identify favourable and disadvantageous markers of persisting OD in COVID-19 patients.
METHODOLOGY: Sixty-six patients (46 female; mean age: 39.9 years) that suffer from OD longer than 6 months due to laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection have participate

To identify the differences between COVID-19-associated and non-COVID-19-associated olfactory dysfunction (OD), we analyzed demographic and clinical characteristics based on the causative virus (COVID versus non-COVID groups) in patients with post-infectious olfactory dysfunction (PIOD) who underwent the olfactory questionnaire and olfactory function test. Out of 169 patients with PIOD, 99 were diagnosed with COVID-19 (COVID group), while 70 were not (non-COVID group). The COVID group was younger and had a higher percentage of male patients as well as patients with parosmia than the non-COVID

Despite the prevalence and health impact of olfactory dysfunction (OD), therapeutic options remain limited. One potential therapy is olfactory training (OT), where patients repeatedly sniff a small set of odors over several weeks with the goal of improving olfactory function. Although double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trials supporting the efficacy of OT are lacking, anecdotal evidence suggests that the procedure is widely recommended to patients with anosmia or other olfactory disorders. To better understand the adoption of OT in clinical practice, we recruited a convenience sample

INTRODUCTION: Parosmia poses a clinical challenge due to a lack of established testing methods, leading to underestimated self-reported symptoms. This study investigated olfactory threshold trends, aiming to highlight parosmia prevalence, analyze threshold patterns, and assess diagnostic potential in current olfactory testing.
METHODS: A total of 407 patients who visited our olfactory clinic from April 2009 to September 2015 were categorized into parosmia and non-parosmia groups based on initial visit questionnaires. The Jet Stream T&T Olfactometer measured olfactory thresholds, including

A 66-year-old woman with no prior medical history presented to the emergency department with diplopia and parosmia. The neurological examination identified an isolated left abducens nerve (CN VI) palsy. A head CT scan, followed by a brain MRI, showed a large, locally advanced tumour in the left sphenoid sinus with extensive skull base involvement and perineural extension into the left orbit. The histopathological analysis of the sphenoid sinus biopsy revealed high-grade diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. A PET scan confirmed this was a primary bone lymphoma. MRI of the pituitary, without contrast,
