Personality traits are associated with the development and severity of chemosensory alterations during chemotherapy: a longitudinal study.

PURPOSE: Chemotherapy-induced sensory alterations are common and may negatively affect nutritional status, treatment adherence and quality of life in people with cancer. However, inter-individual variability in these alterations remains poorly understood. This study examined whether personality traits, food neophobia, disgust sensitivity, and sensitivity to reward, contribute to variability in self-reported sensory alterations during chemotherapy. METHODS: A longitudinal study was conducted in 95 patients undergoing chemotherapy, assessed at baseline (T0) and after nine weeks of treatment (T1

Association of Sinonasal Symptoms and Disease With Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are widely used for cancer therapy and are associated with immune-related adverse events (irAEs) in various organ systems. However, data on sinonasal irAEs remain limited. This study investigates the association between ICI therapy and sinonasal conditions, including chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and nasal polyps, using a national health database. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study utilized the TriNetX US Network to analyze adults diagnosed with malignant neoplasms for which ICIs are an accepted treatment option. Patients treated with FDA-a

Bilateral hypogeusia and food aversion due to lacunar infarct in the right dorsomedial pontine tegmentum.

A 70-year-old right-handed housewife suffered an acute loss of taste, an unpleasant change in the taste of foods and liquids, and a strong aversion to all kinds of food due to a small lacune in the right dorsomedial pontine tegmentum. Eating became so unpleasant that she lost 7 kg in three weeks. Olfaction and the sensibility of the tongue were spared. The right medial longitudinal fascicle, the central tegmental tract, or both, were injured by the tegmental lesion. A discrete right-sided lesion in the upper pontine tegmentum may cause a reversible syndrome consisting of bilateral hypogeusia w

Evaluation of qualitative and quantitative taste alterations in COVID-19.

A large percentage of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients have taste dysfunction. Interleukin 6 (IL-6) levels in mild and moderate COVID-19 patients with the type (quantitative or qualitative) of taste disorders were compared in this observational study. The 208 COVID-19 patients (118 men and 90 women) revealing only taste dysfunctions as prodromic symptoms were classified as mild and moderate patients. Survey results were used to evaluate the taste disorder. The IL-6 levels were measured using a chemiluminescence assay. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Wilcoxon rank, Welc

Perspectives on the Pathophysiology, Management, and Relevance of Olfactory and Gustatory Dysfunction to COVID-19, Part One.

CONTEXT: Amelioration of olfactory and gustatory dysfunction (OGD) disorders has become a common requirement due to COVID-19. Although it's hardly exclusive to COVID-19, OGD's prevalence requires exploration of therapeutic and restorative modalities, on the broadest scale possible. No specific medication or treatment of any noteworthy efficacy exists for OGD. OBJECTIVE: As Part 1 of a three-part article, a narrative review intended to examine the known causes of OGD, not restricted to COVID-19, and frame their relevance for development of new treatments or the repurposing of existing ones. Part Two: Perspectives on Olfactory and Gustatory Dysfunction Pathophysiology, Management, and Relevance to COVID-19: Current Approaches.

CONTEXT: The phenomena of olfactory and gustatory dysfunction disorders (OGD) are hardly unique to COVID-19. However, the widespread incidence of OGD as sequelae of COVID-19 has provoked rejuvenated interest in these long existing, but poorly studied maladies. OBJECTIVE: This second of a three-part review discusses past and current approaches for treatment of OGD, not restricted to those that COVID-19 has caused, with the intention to lay a foundation for consideration of new paradigms for evaluation and management of OGD. DESIGN: The researcher performed a narrative review by searching data

Managing Severe Dysgeusia and Dysosmia in Lung Cancer Patients: A Systematic Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Lung cancer (LC) is highly prevalent worldwide, with elevated mortality. In this population, taste and smell alterations (TSAs) are frequent but overlooked symptoms. The absence of effective therapeutic strategies and evidence-based guidelines constrain TSAs' early recognition, prevention and treatment (Tx), promoting cancer-related malnutrition and jeopardizing survival outcomes and quality of life. OBJECTIVES: To systematically review the literature on TSAs in LC patients, understand the physiopathology, identify potential preventive and Tx strategies and to further encourage

Successful Management of Glioblastoma Chemotherapy-Associated Dysgeusia with Gabapentin.

Dysgeusia is a frequent, yet underreported side effect of chemotherapy for cancer. We report here the first use of gabapentin in two glioblastoma patients who developed dysgeusia following intra-arterial administration of carboplatin or oral administration of lomustine, respectively. Treatment initiation was followed by resolution of taste alteration within weeks. Both patients reported significant improvement in their quality of life and regained weight, allowing further chemotherapy cycles. We hypothesized that in these two cases, chemotherapy impeded gustatory cells turnover and function, r

Olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19): a review of current evidence.

INTRODUCTION: It is reported that coronavirus disease (COVID-19) can affect the sense of smell and taste of infected people. The pathobiology of this virus is still incompletely known, and it is therefore important to explore the impact of COVID-19 infections on olfactory and gustatory functions. We aimed to review current evidence on olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions caused by COVID-19. METHODS: This study was a narrative review performed in 2020 to investigate the olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions of the COVID-19. We searched eight keywords in six databases to determine the related do
