Monoamine oxidase (MAO) of platelets, plasma, lymphocytes and granulocytes in schizophrenia.

Monoamine oxidase (MAO) levels in plasma, platelets, lymphocytes and granulocytes have been compared in schizophrenics and controls using three substrates. No significant difference was found between MAO levels in controls and the schizophrenic group as a whole, but platelets and lymphocytes of the latter (tyramine or benzylamine substrate) showed greater variation and in some cases higher values than controls, irrespective of treatment. Schizophrenics who experienced auditory hallucinations had significantly lower MAO levels in lymphocytes and platelets than those who did not.

The form and content of schizophrenic hallucinations.

To evaluate changes in the hallucinatory experience, the author analyzed the form and content of the hallucinations of 10 schizophrenic patients during two phases of their illness, the acute phase and remission. In both test periods the patients experienced auditory hallucinations as objectively real and as directing their thoughts and behavior. Nonauditory hallucinations appeared more common than cursory examination would suggest. The patients were able to stop auditory hallucinations during remission but not during the acute phase of their illness. Hallucinatory content was threatening and i

Hoigné's syndrome-its course and symptomatology.

The study presents the clinical symptomatology of acute embolic-toxic reactions to penicillin seen in 9 patients treated with the drug. The complex of short-lasting symptoms characterized by severe agitation with confusion, visual and auditory hallucinations and dire fear is caused by accidental penetration of an amount of intramuscular penicillin injected into the venous system. The authors' experience and the data so far published reveal a much more frequent occurrence of Hoigné's (1959) syndrome than is usually thought. The syndrome does not depend upon the dose of a single injection of pro

A case of prolonged confusion after temporal lobe psychomotor status.

A 36-year-old man with prolonged confusion developed after psychomotor status was reported. He had no past history of epileptic seizures or psychotic disorders. The status continued for 20 hours, and twilight state and a slight fever lasted for about 10 days. Thereafter gross impairment of memory and disorientation became remarkable, and, in addition, strong psychic and autonomic disturbances developed, such as visual and auditory hallucinations, excessive excitement, disturbance of sleep, polyphagia, polydypsia, polyuria and hyperhidrosis. The CT scan, carotide angiography, CSF examination, a

Effects of naloxone on schizophrenia: reduction in hallucinations in a subpopulation of subjects.

Endogenous opiate-like peptides (endorphins) are putative neuroregulators located throughout the mammalian brainstem. There is some evidence for their role in pain, stress, and affect. We report that the opiate antagonist, naloxone, alters some schizophrenic symptoms. In a double-blind, cross-over study, naloxone produced decreases in auditory hallucinations in some schizophrenic patients. This finding supports the hypothesis that the endorphins may play a roll in modulating hallucinations in a highly selected subgroup of chronically hallucinating schizophrenic patients.

Phencyclidine-induced psychosis.

During a 13-month period, 9 patients with phencyclidine-induced psychosis were admitted to Darnall Army Hospital. They exhibited hostility agitation, and tangentiality and had delusions of influence and religious grandiosity. Six subjects reported auditory hallucinations, and 4 were disoriented in at least 1 sphere. Despite treatment with antipsychotic medication, the psychotic episodes often persisted for more than 30 days. Our clinical finding of prolonged psychotic reactions, together with previous reports of the effects of phencyclidine, suggests that phenycyclidine provides an intriguing

Paranoid delusions and auditory hallucinations associated with digoxin intoxication.

The 83-year-old woman in this case report developed paranoid delusions and auditory hallucinations in association with toxic serum levels of digoxin, while remaining alert, unagitated, and coherent in thinking. No cardiovascular or metabolic abnormalities were discovered to account for her psychiatric symptoms. Her mental status rapidly returned to normal as serum digoxin declined to therapeutic levels.

Differences in platelet monoamine oxidase activity in subgroups of schizophrenic and depressive disorders.

Platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity was measured in patients with nonaffective schizophrenic disorders (i.e., without prominent symptoms of depressions or manias), and in patients with schizophrenia-related depressions. MAO activity was significantly lower than control values in a subgroup of 16 patients with nonaffective schizophrenic disorders (most of whom were paranoid) characterized by the presence of auditory hallucinations and delusions. Platelet MAO activity was not reduced in 16 other nonaffective schizophrenic patients without auditory hallucinations. Platelet MAO activity was

[Psychosensorial manifestations observed in psychotic patients treated with betamimetic drugs].

We report four observations of women who had acute or subacute psychotic crisis and who were stabilized without any manifestation. In order to delay delivery these women received during pre-partum high doses of beta-mimetic drugs (isoxsuprine and salbutamol). Such a prescription seems to have been responsible of acute and transient psychotic symptoms similar to those observed in drug-induced psychosis (derealisation preceeding depersonalization, visual and auditory hallucinations, anxiety). Recently Gluckman has described a similar case to those reported here. But in his case the conditions of

Verbal auditory hallucinations: mind, self, and society.

Verbal auditory hallucinations of schizophrenic patients are usually sensed as coming from m-ltiple voices. The voices are usually not recognized by patients; they are anonymous. They are expressed mainly in the second person (as if directed to the patient by others), occasionally in the third person (as if two or more persons are overheard talking about the patient), very rarely in the first person. They are sensed as separate from the self and out of the patient's control. All of these characteristics can be said to describe how a person generalizes from his social experiences a societal eva

Naloxone-induced reversal of schizophrenic hallucinations.

In a single-blind pilot study 0.4 mg naloxone i.v. was found temporarily to reduce or abolish auditory hallucinations in four cases of chronic schizophrenia whereas saline was without effect. In one of these patients there was a similar reversal also of her visual hallucinations. Two additional cases who denied hearing voices before the injections, reported no subjective effects.

Hitler: a neurohistorical formulation.

It is hypothesized that Adolf Hitler suffered from a constitutional left-side weakness that allowed his cerebral hemisphere to exert a strong influence on his thought and behavior. Physical characteristics such as trembling of the left extremities, lack of a left testicle, and tendency to exhibit leftward eye movements are interpreted as supportive of the hypothesis. Right hemisphere dominance is consistent with a number of Hitler's personal traits such as praise of the irrational, automatic speech, auditory hallucinations, hypochondriasis, uncontrolled rages, and spatial and musical interests

An investigation of psychological factors involved in the predisposition to auditory hallucinations.

Previous research by the author (Slade, 1972, 1973) and others has suggested that psychological stress plays an important role in triggering off the experience of auditory hallucinations. Clearly, however, predispositional factors are involved as well. The present study is an attempt to investigate some of the psychological factors which may predispose the individual to such experiences. A battery of tests involving cognitive, personality and mental imagery variables and the verbal transformation effect was administered to two small groups of psychotic patients differing only in respect of a h

[Adaptive reactions in the auditory analyzer of patients with schizophrenia, presenile psychoses and alcoholic hallucinosis].

Some results of audiometric studies in 272 patients with different psychoses (schizophrenia, presenile psychoses, alcoholic hallucinoses) were analyzed. The authors examined the auditory adaptation to threshold stimula and the time of reverse adaptation. In most of the cases adaptation was not attained or was lengthened. These studies did not reveal any nosological specificity in adaptational disturbances. In cases of auditory hallucinations the index of adaptational time had no principal differences either. These facts gave ground to consider the adaptational shifts as general nonspecific mec

Reduced platelet monoamine oxidase activity in a subgroup of schizophrenic patients.

Platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity was significantly lower than control values in a subgroup of 16 schizophrenic patients (most of whom were paranoid) characterized by the presence of auditory hallucinations and delusions. Platelet MAO activity was not reduced in 16 other schizophrenic patients without auditory hallucinations. This finding suggests that reduced platelet MAO activity is not found in all schizophrenic patients but tends to occur in a clinically identifiable subgroup.

Effects of postinatal stress on visual and auditory evoked potentials.

Maturation of visual and auditory evoked potentials (mainly the P3 wave) of 10 controls and of 10 infants exposed to recurrent postnatal stressful events (crying spells lacking organic basis) have been compared. The sourse of maturation of P3 waves may serve as indicator of growth and nature of cognitive processes (including perception). Recurrent srying spells seemed to delay appearance of visual P3 wave, prolonged its latency, and delayed appearance of visible differences in the shape of visual P3 wave upon exposure of the subjects to different visual experiences. A compensatory increase of
