'Are these my thoughts?': A 20-year prospective study of thought insertion, thought withdrawal, thought broadcasting, and their relationship to auditory verbal hallucinations.

The co-occurrence of delusions and other symptoms at the onset of psychosis is a challenge for theories about the aetiology of psychosis. This paper explores the relatedness of delusions about the experience of thinking (thought insertion, thought withdrawal, and thought broadcasting) and auditory verbal hallucinations by describing their trajectories over a 20-year period in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia, affective and other psychosis, and unipolar depression nonpsychosis. The sample consisted of 407 participants who were recruited at index hospitalization and evaluated over six fo

Neuroscience robotics for controlled induction and real-time assessment of hallucinations.

Although hallucinations are important and frequent symptoms in major psychiatric and neurological diseases, little is known about their brain mechanisms. Hallucinations are unpredictable and private experiences, making their investigation, quantification and assessment highly challenging. A major shortcoming in hallucination research is the absence of methods able to induce specific and short-lasting hallucinations, which resemble clinical hallucinations, can be elicited repeatedly and vary across experimental conditions. By integrating clinical observations and recent advances in cognitive ne

Prevalence and characteristics of multi-modal hallucinations in people with psychosis who experience visual hallucinations.

Hallucinations can occur in single or multiple sensory modalities. Historically, greater attention has been paid to single sensory modality experiences with a comparative neglect of hallucinations that occur across two or more sensory modalities (multi-modal hallucinations). With growing evidence suggesting that visual hallucinations may be experienced along with other hallucinations, this study aimed to explore multi-modal hallucinations in a sample of people with psychotic disorders who reported visual hallucinations (n = 22). No participants reported just visual hallucinations i.e. all repo

[Auditory verbal hallucinations in patients with borderline personality disorder].

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) experienced by patients with a borderline personality disorder (BPD) are considered to be rare, to have a 'pseudo'-quality, and to cause little distress. AIM: To provide an overview of studies of the prevalence and phenomenological characteristics of AVHs in patients with a BPD, and of the ensuing degree of suffering. METHOD: We performed a systematic literature search using PubMed and the Ovid database. RESULTS: 27% of patients with a BPD experience AVH. Phenomenologically, these percepts are indistinguishable from those exper

Clinical correlates of olfactory hallucinations in schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVES. Olfactory hallucinations (OHs) are underrepresented in conventional clinical instruments, infrequently researched, and poorly understood. To advance understanding of OHs, we examined their past-month prevalence and co-occurring symptoms in two datasets. DESIGN. One dataset comprised categorical codes and was examined using homogeneity analysis and logistic regression; the other dataset comprised numeric ratings and was examined using principal components analyses and linear regression. METHOD. The two datasets included: (1) 962 cases with Present State Examination - 9th Edition (PS

Treatment of Parkinson's disease. Psychological disorders: striking a balance in order to optimise antiparkinsonian treatment.

Parkinson's disease is frequently associated with psychological disorders, especially depression, psychotic disorders, and dementia. We examined the management of psychological disorders in Parkinson's disease, including the use of psychotropic drugs, by reviewing the literature using the standard Prescrire methodology. About one-third of patients with Parkinson's disease experience visual hallucinations. Other hallucinations and delusions can also occur. Dose reduction or withdrawal of certain antiparkinsonian drugs sometimes improves psychotic disorders, providing an acceptable level of symp

Tactile, olfactory, and gustatory hallucinations in psychotic disorders: a descriptive study.

INTRODUCTION: Hallucinations are a common feature of psychotic illness and occur across diagnoses. While auditory and visual hallucinations are known to represent common features of psychosis, tactile, olfactory, and gustatory hallucinations (TOGHs) are often believed to be rare in primary psychotic illness. The present study examined hallucinations across sensory modalities in patients with primary psychotic disorders by diagnosis and in association with mood and psychotic symptoms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this descriptive study we examined diagnostic and symptom data from a large cohort o

Assessment of hallucinations in Parkinson's disease using a novel scale.

OBJECTIVE: To assess hallucinations in Parkinson's disease (PD), we developed a novel practical rating scale that evaluates five items including variety, frequency, and severity of hallucinations, caregiver burden levels, and psychiatric status at nighttime. METHODS: Forty-one PD patients and their caregivers were examined regarding the status of the hallucinations associated with PD. RESULTS: As a measure of internal consistency, the Tottori University Hallucination Rating Scale (TUHARS) has a Cronbach's alpha of 0.88. Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Hoehn-Yahr stage were associate

[Hallucinogenic fungi (psilocybe). Part II. Identification of Psilocybe semilanceata by PCR].

Psilocybe semilanceata belongs to the genus of Psilocybe; it is a hallucinogenic fungus, frequently found in regions with high rainfall, in the grass and moss. There are estimated to be as many as eight Psilocybe hallucinogenic species containing psychoactive alkaloids, such as psilocybin and psilocin, which may cause visual, auditory and other hallucinations, as well as profound changes in the perception of time and space. Since identification of P semilanceata in a form different than a fresh mushroom is almost impossible, the authors made an attempt at developing a method of fungi identific

Auras and other hallucinations: windows on the visual brain.

Hallucinations in psychologically normal individuals provide a valuable route to studying the neural mechanisms of visual awareness. Migraine auras, epileptic auras and the hallucinations of Charles Bonnet Syndrome are examined in this context. Both similarities and striking differences in content are noted and the extent to which we are currently able to localize the source of these forms of endogenously driven visual awareness is discussed.

Peduncular hallucinosis due to brain metastases from cervix cancer: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Brain metastases from cervical carcinoma are rare. Accompanying symptoms depend on the location of the metastatic lesions. Penduncular hallucinosis is a vivid form of hallucination with clinical findings indicating a lesion of the upper midbrain. We hereby report a probable first case of peduncular hallucinosis associated with brain metastases from cervical cancer. CASE: A 42-year-old woman had been diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of cervix. On admission for her increasing pelvic pain, she had complex visual hallucinations comprising cartoon children, figurative people and a foggy r

Clinical variables and genetic loading for schizophrenia: analysis of published Danish adoption study data.

Schizophrenia shows considerable clinical variation, but the relationship between clinical variables and degree of genetic loading for schizophrenia is unclear. We investigated this by analyzing published data from the adoption study of Kety et al. (1994) in Denmark. We sought to determine which clinical variables in proband adoptees with chronic schizophrenia predicted risk of schizophrenia in their biological relatives, using logistic regression analysis. We found that risk of chronic schizophrenia in relatives was predicted by the presence of pervasive negative symptoms (odds ratio [OR] = 9

Charles Bonnet syndrome with auditory hallucinations: a diagnostic dilemma.

Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) appears to be commoner in elderly people than was previously thought. Nonetheless, as yet, no firm diagnostic criteria have been established for CBS, leaving the need for well-defined diagnostic criteria describing this syndrome unfulfilled. Two recently proposed diagnostic criteria for CBS insist on an absence of hallucinations in modalities other than visual. However, we experienced 2 cases suffering from probable CBS who experienced auditory hallucinations. In this report, we recommend that even if CBS coexists with other hallucinations, we should not exclude C

The dimensional structure of first episode psychosis: an exploratory factor analysis.

BACKGROUND: Recent research has focused upon the subdiagnostic level in an effort to derive more valid domains of psychotic disorder. This has led to the influential positive-negative dichotomy in schizophrenia being superseded by a three-syndrome model. The strategy of looking for syndromes within poorly validated diagnostic categories, such as schizophrenia, has limitations, particularly since it originated in, and has been largely restricted to, the more chronic subsamples. METHOD: A representative sample of first episode psychosis (N = 509), which includes the full spectrum of functional

Factor-derived subsyndromes of schizophrenia and familial morbid risks.

Factor analysis was performed on OPCRIT checklist ratings from 66 patients with RDC schizophrenia. Eight substantive factors were found, characterised respectively by: positive formal thought disorder; first rank delusions; first rank hallucinations; inappropriate affect/bizarre behaviour; negative symptoms; grandiose/bizarre delusions; delusions of influence/persecution; and other hallucinations. A history of schizophrenia and other non-affective psychoses was ascertained in the probands' first-degree relatives using a family history approach. Illness in relatives was best predicted by proban

Dangerousness and command hallucinations: an investigation of psychotic inpatients.

Forensic consultations with psychotic inpatients frequently include issues of risk management, such as dangerousness and civil commitment. An important dimension of these consultations is the role of command hallucinations in producing an increased risk of aggressive behavior. In the present study, psychotic patients with command hallucinations (N = 27) were compared with patients with other hallucinations (N = 27) and with other psychotic patients (N = 30). The groups did not differ on aggressive behavior or most nonhallucinatory symptoms. However, most patients (84.0%) with command hallucina

Characteristics of schizophrenic patients and the outcome of fluphenazine and of electroconvulsive treatments.

We examined the outcome with fluphenazine treatment and ECT in a group of 120 patients according to the incidence of psychopathological symptoms, the patients' status on a variety of sociodemographic and anamnestic variables, and their diagnoses according to 13 systems for diagnosing schizophrenia. All had previously been considered to be schizophrenic patients at least once in hospital settings. The outcome with fluphenazine was better in patients with passivity feelings, auditory hallucinations and other hallucinations and delusions. The outcome with patients who had ECT, as judged from the
