A middle-aged immigrant male from a region with endemic tuberculosis who had a history of end-stage kidney disease presented to the emergency room for routine hemodialysis and abdominal swelling. He was admitted to the medicine service for suggested daily dialysis to improve his volume overload, which was attributed to nephrogenic ascites. He was found to have several findings concerning for systemic illness, including fevers, night sweats, hypercalcemia, lymphadenopathy, omental thickening, ascitic fluid with a serum ascites albumin gradient of less than 1.1 gm/dL, and exudative pleural effus

Tuberculosis (TB) pleural effusion (TPE) is the second most common manifestation of extrapulmonary TB (EPTB), which remains a great diagnostic challenge worldwide. In Uzbekistan, there has been no formal evaluation of the actual practices of diagnosing and treating TPE. Our cohort study therefore aimed to describe the frequency and types of different diagnostic procedures of TPE during 2017-2018 and assess the association of baseline characteristics and establish diagnostic methods with TB treatment outcomes. In total, 187 patients with presumptive TPE were assessed, and 149 had a confirmed di

BACKGROUND/AIM: The endobronchial tuberculosis (EBTB) is an uncommon type of tuberculosis. The respiratory symptoms in EBTB are usually nonspecific and misleading. The aim of the study is to determine the clinical features and diagnostic aspects of EBTB.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight cases of endobronchial tuberculosis collected from January 2009 to October 2015.
RESULTS: EBTB was found in 16 females and 12 males. The mean age was 48 years. The history of tuberculosis and tuberculosis contagion were not found in any case. The respiratory symptoms were dominated by cough and dyspnea. Hem

BACKGROUND: In sub-Saharan Africa, there is a dearth of published literature on extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB).
OBJECTIVE: To describe demographic, diagnostic and HIV-status characteristics of patients with EPTB in Bénin, their treatment outcomes, and among those who completed their treatment in the Centre National Hospitalier de Pneumo-Phtisiologie (CNHP-P), the proportion whose bodyweight increased during treatment.
MATERIAL AND FINDINGS: This was a retrospective cohort study with comparisons made between EPTB and new smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis (NPTB) patients diagnosed in t

INTRODUCTION: Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based techniques to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA in respiratory specimens have been increasingly used to diagnose pulmonary tuberculosis. Their use in non-respiratory specimens to diagnose extrapulmonary tuberculosis is, however, controversial. In this study, we estimated the accuracy of three in-country commercialized PCR-based diagnostic techniques in pleural fluid samples for the diagnosis of pleural tuberculosis.
METHODS: Patients underwent thoracenthesis for diagnosis purposes; pleural fluid aliquots were frozen and subsequently subm

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease mostly due to Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is frequent in developing countries and its incidence is rising in developed countries. Lungs are the most involved organs of the chest but other structures can be affected. Imaging is fundamental in the management of the disease. Confirmation of diagnosis can be made only by bacteriologic and/or histologic exams. The first approach of diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms and chest X-ray signs. Radiologic signs depend on patient's age, his immune status and his previous contact with M. tuberculosis. Conventio

Pseudotumour is a rare presentation of bronchopulmonary tuberculosis, occurring in immunocompetent patients, which simulates lung cancer and may thus cause diagnostic difficulty. To assess the frequency and clinical features of tuberculous pseudotumour in immunocompetent patients, we analyzed all cases of pulmonary tuberculosis hospitalized in our department. Tuberculous pseudotumour was defined by the presence of a bronchial or pulmonary lesion suggestive of lung cancer. Over a period of 11 years, 12 cases of tuberculous pseudotumour were collected among 341 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis (3

BACKGROUND: Summary measures of health are essential in making estimates of health status that are comparable across time and place. They can be used for assessing the performance of health systems, informing effective policy making, and monitoring the progress of nations toward achievement of sustainable development goals. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2015 (GBD 2015) provides disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) and healthy life expectancy (HALE) as main summary measures of health. We assessed the trends of health status in Iran and 15 neighboring countrie

BACKGROUND: The clinical polymorphism and the low yield bacteriological tests make the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TBC) in children often difficult. THE AIM of this report is to specify hospital incidence of childhood TBC and to discuss problems in diagnosis.
METHODS: We reviewed retrospectively cases of TBC enrolled at Medicine A Department in Children's Hospital of Tunis during the last ten years (1998-2007). Diagnosis of TB was supported according to bacteriological or histological confirmation or regarding the association of epidemiological data (TB contagium), clinical and radiological fi

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the epidemiological characteristics of and trends regarding the incidence of pleural TB.
METHODS: This was a retrospective descriptive study of TB cases reported between 1998 and 2005 and compiled from the Epidemiological Surveillance Tuberculosis System (Epi-TB database).
RESULTS: A total of 144,347 new cases of TB were reported during the period studied. Pulmonary TB was the predominant form (118,575 cases; 82.2%). Among the extrapulmonary forms (25,773 cases; 17.8%), pleural TB was the form most often reported (12,545 cases; 48.7%). For all forms, the incidence (per

We present a case of tuberculous tenosynovitis of the extensor tendons of the hand. Our patient was a young doctor working in the respiratory medicine department. He was injured on the dorsal aspect of the hand with a needle used for pleural aspiration. The clinical features consisted of gradually swelling, mild pain and stiffness of the metacarpophalangeal joint. The diagnosis was made after synovectomy. Histological and bacteriological examinations revealed tuberculosis. Treatment consisted of synovectomy and appropriate antibiotics. The clinical course was excellent after one year follow-up

Studies investigating the epidemiology of tuberculosis in Greece are lacking. Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be a public health problem and its dimensions are not clearly defined. The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence of pulmonary and pleural TB in each of the three branches of military personnel serving in the Greek armed forces, during the period 1965-1993. All military personnel with confirmed pulmonary or pleural TB during the period 1965-1993 were studied retrospectively. The age of the patients ranged from 18-45 years. A significant number of TB patients were detected by th

OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: An increasing number of diagnoses of pleural effusions (PE) have been made over the last 8 years in the Department of Internal Medicine of the Centre Hospitalier de Kigali, Rwanda. In order to determine the aetiology of PE and to examine its possible association with HIV-1 infection, we performed an aetiological work-up, including thoracocentesis and pleural punch biopsy, of all new patients with PE of undetermined aetiology referred to the Division of Pulmonary Diseases of the Department of Internal Medicine of the Centre Hospitalier de Kigali between 14 September 1988

Data from the national tuberculosis programme show that extrapulmonary tuberculosis is increasing rapidly in Tanzania, most likely caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic. Retrospective data from 271 patients admitted to Muhimbili Medical Centre (MMC), Dar es Salaam between January 1, 1987 and December 31, 1988 with the diagnosis of extrapulmonary tuberculosis reveal that in only 18% of the cases a bacteriological or histological confirmation of the diagnosis had been made. This figure is only 3% when the tuberculous lymphadenitis cases are excluded. The most common diagnosis

Pleural biopsy with Abram's needle was made in 160 consecutive patients with undiagnosed pleural effusions. The sampled fluid and pleural bioptates were examined histologically, cytologically and bacteriologically. In 40 cases malignant changes were found, out of 87 with confirmed malignancy. Neoplastic cells were found in 26 patients, ovreall the diagnosis was made in 65% of lung cancer cases. Out of 41 cases of tuberculosis, pleural biopsy provided this diagnosis in 24 patients (59%). Bacteriological examination and pathological of the biopsy specimen allowed to increase the diagnostic field

A 39-year old patient presented with small, sudden hemoptyses and a diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis was made on radiographic pleural and parenchymatous lesions but without bacteriological confirmation. Two years later, the patient was admitted to hospital following severe hemoptysis. Echocardiography revealed the presence of a tumour in the right ventricular outflow tract. At surgery, nodules were also resected from the superior vena cava. Histological examination of the surgical specimens suggested that the tumour was an angiosarcoma. Six months later, the patient returned complaining of

The morbidity from juvenile tuberculosis in the GDR amounts presently to 0.6 per 100.000 in the age group 0 to 15 years. The GDR's centre for treating children affected by tuberculosis is the above hospital for lung diseases in the town of Harzgerode. Between 1980 and 1983 a total of 89 children (48 boys and 41 girls) with various forms of tuberculosis have been treated there. The anamnesis of the children with lung tuberculosis was largely unspecific, only 6 from 29 had pneumonia or pneumonia was suspected respectively. All patients with abdominal tuberculosis had pains in the peritoneal cavi
