A Comprehensive Review of Worldwide Case Series of Neurocysticercosis and Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy with Hippocampal Sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a frequent cause of epilepsy in endemic regions. An association between NCC and hippocampal sclerosis (HS), a key pathological substrate of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy, has been increasingly reported but remains controversial. SUMMARY: A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect focusing on publications describing epilepsy due to NCC with HS. Twenty-three original articles, identified through 2023, were retrieved from Brazil, Ecuador, India, Mexico, and Korea. The proposed relationships between NCC and HS include incidental

Subarachnoid neurocysticercosis in a rural area of the Bolivian Chaco: A population-based survey through the use of a novel urine antigen assay.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a major public health concern in low-middle-income countries. Subarachnoid NCC (SANCC), a less frequent form of NCC, is characterized by severe clinical evolution, high mortality and impactful neurological sequelae in survivors. However, due to a long pre-clinical period, early diagnosis and treatment of SANCC would likely improve the clinical course and reduce the occurrence of complications. To date, data on the prevalence of SANCC in endemic settings are scant, and there are no commercially available tests for SANCC screening in at-risk populations. Between Octob

Histopathological, immunohistochemical, and molecular characterization of Coenurus cerebralis infection in sheep with evaluation of cerebrospinal cytokine responses.

Coenurosis is a significant zoonotic parasitic disease caused by Coenurus cerebralis, the larval stage of the cestode Taenia multiceps. The parasite invades the central nervous system (CNS) of intermediate hosts, particularly sheep and goats, leading to neurological disorders, severe economic losses, and death in advanced cases. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of C. cerebralis infection in sheep in Egyp between March 2024 and August 2024 and to characterize its histopathological, immunohistochemical, and molecular features, with a focus on cytokine gene expression in cerebrospinal

Elucidating the causal mechanisms of Taenia solium transmission in humans, pigs and the environment: A global systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Taenia solium cysticercosis/taeniasis disease complex is a multifaceted neglected tropical zoonosis. Previous reviews on T. solium cysticercosis/taeniasis risk factors have been limited by geographic region and/or host, making it difficult to understand the complex web of causes underlying infection at the various stages of its life cycle. Our objective was to elucidate the causal mechanisms involved in the transmission of T. solium to all hosts through a systematic review of the literature. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted a systematic literature search about the epid

[Neurocysticercosis].

Neurocysticercosis is a parasitic disease in which the central nervous system is infected by Cysticercus cellulosae, the larvae from the pork tapeworm Taenia solium. Almost all cases are imported and acquired in developing countries with poor sanitation. Symptoms include seizures and chronic headaches. A medical history that includes travel to endemic areas and appropriate imaging studies aid diagnosis. Treatment involves anthelmintics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and anticonvulsants. With appropriate diagnosis and treatment, the prognosis is good. Although rare, this condition should be consider

Monoclonal antibody-based immunohistochemistry reveals residual Taenia solium antigens in calcified granulomas from pigs with neurocysticercosis.

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis (NCC), a parasitic brain infection caused by Taenia solium larvae, remains a leading cause of preventable epilepsy globally. Although calcified brain lesions were formerly considered as the quiescent end stage of NCC, they may act as epileptogenic foci. It has been suggested that parasitic antigens within calcified lesions may act as potential triggers of inflammation and subsequent seizure activity. In this study, we developed and optimized immunohistochemistry (IHC) assays employing anti-Taenia solium monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) to detect residual cyst antigen

Microencapsulated oxfendazole modulates neuroinflammation in experimental Taenia crassiceps neurocysticercosis.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC), caused by the larval stage of Taenia solium, is the leading cause of acquired epilepsy in developing countries and an increasing public health concern in developed regions. Albendazole (ABZ) and praziquantel are the mainstays of current treatment, but their effectiveness is constrained by their poor absorption in the central nervous system and the worsening of inflammatory reactions after parasite degeneration. This neuroinflammation brought on by the medication poses a serious safety risk. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the immunomodulatory and histopathological

Interictal epileptiform discharges in calcified neurocysticercosis-associated epilepsy: An exploratory study.

The objective of the study was to assess the frequency of interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) in calcified neurocysticercosis (NCC) and its relationship with calcification burden. Forty-nine patients with calcified NCC (low-burden, 1-2 calcifications, n = 24; high-burden, ≥15 calcifications, n = 25) and seizure history underwent prolonged (8-h) electroencephalography (EEG), interpreted by epileptologists who were blinded to patient history and calcification category. Clinical seizure outcomes were also assessed. We found that IEDs occurred in 7 of 49 participants (14.3%), with no differe

Insights into the mitochondrial genomes of Taenia tapeworms.

The genus Taenia belongs to the class Cestoda and comprises a diverse group of species of medical, veterinary, and ecological importance. These tapeworms exhibit complex life cycles involving carnivorous definitive hosts and herbivorous or omnivorous intermediate hosts. Taenia solium, T. saginata, and T. asiatica are particularly important due to their impact on human health, notably through taeniasis and cysticercosis. Mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) have emerged as powerful tools for taxonomy, diagnostics, and evolutionary studies of these parasites. Complete mitogenome sequences are ava

Parenchymal neurocysticercosis complicated by hydrocephalus: A rare case report with mechanistic insights.

Cerebral cysticercosis (CC), a neglected tropical disease of the central nervous system caused by Taenia solium larvae, is rarely associated with hydrocephalus in its parenchymal form. We report a 45-year-old male with a 20-year progressive course of cognitive decline, gait instability, urinary incontinence, and recurrent seizures. Epidemiological history included long-term rural residence, close contact with free-roaming domestic pigs, poor household sanitation, lack of standardized latrine use, and unsafe human feces disposal in the endemic region, together with consumption of undercooked po
