Occurrence of autochthonous neurocysticercosis in Germany: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis [NCC] represents a severe manifestation of parasitic infection of the central nervous system [CNS] by larvae of Taenia (T.) solium, the pork tapeworm. Although it is one of the main causes of acquired epilepsy worldwide, endemic transmission in Europe has been largely eliminated, with only isolated autochthonous cases occurring. CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old woman from a rural region in Saxony-Anhalt, Eastern Germany, with no history of travel abroad or contact with livestock or known tapeworm carriers presented with a first-time generalized epileptic seizure.

Genetic Diversity of Taenia hydatigena (Cestoda: Cyclophyllidea) in Small Ruminants from Algeria.

PURPOSE: Taenia hydatigena is a globally distributed cestode causing cysticercosis in livestock, particularly in small ruminants. In North Africa, data on its distribution and prevalence are scarce, with no prior studies addressing its molecular epidemiology. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and genetic diversity of T. hydatigena in sheep and goats from Algeria. METHODS: A total of 1,002 animals (939 sheep and 63 goats) were examined for the presence of T. hydatigena cysts at the municipal slaughterhouse of Djelfa province between October 2021 and July 2022. Sixty-nine isolates w

Taenia solium neurocysticercosis: Its current epidemiological, diagnostic, therapeutic, and control landscapes.

Neurocysticercosis is the most common helminthic parasitic disease affecting the human central nervous system and is pleomorphic in its presentation. It is frequently encountered in daily practice in most parts of the world, and also commonly seen in industrialized countries in immigrant populations. In the past decade, new treatment (combined anti-parasitic drugs, increased attention to reducing treatment-associated inflammation and damage, new surgical strategies), and diagnostic (more specific antigen and antibody detection concepts and tools, more sensitive magnetic resonance imaging seque

Prevalence of neurocysticercosis and its characteristics among people with epileptic seizures and progressively worsening severe headaches in 60 villages in three provinces of Burkina Faso.

PURPOSE: Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a common cause of epilepsy in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Few studies have described neuroimaging findings in individuals with headaches in addition to epilepsy. Our aim was therefore to describe the types of NCC lesions seen on cerebral computed tomography (cCT), among participants with progressively worsening severe headaches (PWSH) and epilepsy living in 60 villages in Burkina Faso, and to determine the prevalence of NCC in these groups,. METHODS: Data from a screening questionnaire for epilepsy and PWSH and subsequent neurological examina

Two Cases of Neurocysticercosis in Indigenous Papuans: Diagnostic and Public Health Challenges.

BACKGROUND Neurocysticercosis (NCC) remains a neglected but preventable parasitic infection that is endemic in many low- and middle-income countries where pigs are raised. Despite Indonesia being endemic for the causative agent of NCC (Taenia solium), documentation of NCC in Papua is limited. CASE REPORT We describe 2 computed tomography (CT)-confirmed cases of NCC diagnosed at Wamena Regional General Hospital in Highland Papua, Indonesia. The first case involved an 11-year-old girl presenting with visual hallucinations and blindness. The second case was a 20-year-old man presenting with psych

Parasitology at the heart of the "One Health" concept: a longstanding alliance illustrated by cysticercosis control.

The "One Health" concept, emphasizing the interdependence of human, animal, and ecosystem health, has gained renewed global attention and institutional support from the World Health Organization, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, United Nations Environment Program, and World Organization for Animal Health. Here we underline that some principles of parasitology are embedded in this concept. As early as the 19th century, Rudolf Virchow affirmed the unity of human and veterinary medicine, a vision long practiced by parasitologists through their multidisciplinary work on zoo

Acute hepatic-stage infection with Cysticercus tenuicollis in Hu sheep from northeastern China: a case report.

Acute hepatic-stage infection with Cysticercus tenuicollis is rarely captured at necropsy and may be overlooked, as larvae typically migrate from the liver to the peritoneal cavity as the infection progresses. Here, we report sudden deaths in 3-4-month-old Hu sheep from a farm in Daqing, northeastern China, and describe the etiological agent and hepatic lesions. Necropsy revealed numerous translucent cystic lesions adherent to the hepatic capsule and diffuse intraparenchymal cystic lesions with multifocal hemorrhagic tracts. Hepatic histopathology showed disrupted lobular architecture with hep

Neurocysticercosis Is the Result of the Interplay between Parasites, Hormones, and Inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Parasitic infections of the central nervous system are still a health problem in low- and middle-income countries and due to international travels and migration can affect even opulent countries. Parasites can modulate host immunity to ensure their long-term survival without inflammatory symptoms; therefore, infection of the brain parenchyma by Taenia solium cysticerci (parenchymal neurocysticercosis) may be asymptomatic, or on the other hand lead to severe inflammation that initiates glial activation with production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, with mild to severe neurological s

A rare presentation of solitary orbital cysticercosis.

A 68-year-old male presented with a three-month history of a painless, non-resolving mass in the left upper eyelid, unresponsive to a prior course of anti-inflammatory treatment. Orbital computed tomography (CT) revealed a well-defined, nodular soft-tissue density lesion in the lateral aspect of the orbit, adjacent to the orbital lobe of the lacrimal gland. The mass was successfully excised under local nerve block anesthesia. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of cysticercosis. Postoperative recovery was uneventful, with complete resolution of the eyelid deformity observed a

Updates on diagnosis and management of parasitic infections of the central nervous system.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Parasitic infections of the human nervous system are frequently overlooked as causes of neurological morbidity, mostly because of lack of diagnostic awareness from clinicians in developed countries. Although limited and unfunded, research in neuroparasitoses leads to improved diagnostic and treatment approaches, and improvements in immunological, molecular and imaging techniques provide new insights in these neglected infections. This review succinctly describes most parasitic infections affecting humans and highlights new information available in the literature. RECENT FIN

Taenia solium extracellular vesicles decrease reactive oxygen species production in human neutrophils by inhibiting myeloperoxidase activity.

Taenia solium cysticerci are the etiological agents of neurocysticercosis, a leading cause of acquired epilepsy worldwide and a significant public health problem in endemic regions. The chronicity of the infection reflects a complex host-parasite interaction in which the parasite establishes long-term persistence through immunomodulatory mechanisms. In recent years, extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as important mediators for some of these interactions. EVs are membrane-bound structures released by virtually every organism studied, which carry a diverse set of molecules that mediate in

Improving Neurocysticercosis Diagnosis: Neurocysticercosis Diagnostic Practices at a Large Public Hospital System in Texas.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a cestode infection of the central nervous system caused by the larval form of Taenia solium. Diagnosis is often delayed because of low health care provider awareness of the disease. This study evaluated contemporary provider practices within a large county health care system in the United States. We retrospectively identified adult patients with NCC between 2017 and 2021 through the International Classification of Diseases 10 diagnostic code and extracted variables from their electronic medical records using a standardized data collection form. We compared provider

A giant neurocysticercosis diagnosed by Western blotting.

A 45-year-old man visited with suboccipital and posterior neck pain accompanied with blurred vision, dysarthria and paralytic feeling for 7 months. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed large eccentrically located cyst (6×4.8 cm) within posterior fossa which compressed right side cerebellar hemisphere and brainstem. The transparent cyst wall and fluid were removed by suboccipital craniectomy and the symptoms disappeared. Western blotting of the patient's cyst fluid reacted positively with the anti-cysticercus 150 kDa antibody and therefore the giant cyst was proved to be unusual giant neurocysti

Early antiseizure medication tapering in 2-18-year-olds with single parenchymal neurocysticercosis based on risk assessment: A prospective intervention study.

BACKGROUND: The optimal duration of antiseizure medication (ASM) therapy for single parenchymal calcified or granular nodular neurocysticercosis (NCC) remains unclear. In this prospective interventional study, we stratified children aged 2-18 years with single calcified or granular nodular parenchymal NCC into a low-risk group based on literature review and implemented a protocol for early ASM tapering. We hypothesized that ≥80% of patients in this low-risk group would remain seizure-free after early ASM tapering, with a minimum follow-up of six months. METHODS: A cohort of patients with sing

Integrating age-dependent pig susceptibility and spatial exposure heterogeneity improves agent-based modeling of Taenia solium transmission.

Taenia solium causes an estimated 2.8 million disability-adjusted life years annually and substantial economic burdens in endemic regions. Understanding pig infection dynamics is essential for control, yet age-dependent susceptibility, acquired immunity, and spatially heterogeneous exposure are rarely represented in transmission models. We integrated experimental infection data across pig age groups into a local-scale agent-based model (ABM) of T. solium transmission. The model includes age-related susceptibility peaking at weaning, immunity elicited by egg exposure, and heterogeneous pig-envi

Clinical decision-making in gastric taeniasis: risks of endoscopic removal and role of staged therapy.

This case describes a rare presentation of gastric taeniasis in a young woman with chronic atrophic gastritis and subcutaneous lesions consistent with cysticercosis. Stool microscopy confirmed Taenia spp eggs, though species identification was limited by the absence of morphological or molecular confirmation. While clinical evidence strongly suggested Taenia solium, this limitation is acknowledged. The case underscores the importance of clinical judgement in avoiding endoscopic removal, given risks of incomplete extraction, rupture and anaphylaxis. A staged pharmacologic regimen was employed:
