Depression and anxiety symptoms among Kenyan adolescents: psychometric validation, prevalence, network analysis, and psychosocial determinants.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent mental health in Sub-Saharan Africa remains critically understudied despite high burden estimates. We assessed the psychometric properties of Western-derived instruments, prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms, associations with psychosocial and sociodemographic factors, and symptom network structures in a large multi-year sample of Kenyan adolescents. METHODS: We administered depression (PHQ-8), anxiety (GAD-7), social support, perceived control, and wellbeing measures to 7865 Kenyan secondary school students aged 12-20 across three studies (2021-2023). RESULTS

Sex-Based Disparities in Health Care Access and Utilization Among Patients With Atrial Fibrillation.

IMPORTANCE: Females with atrial fibrillation (AF) experience a higher risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and mortality than males with AF. Theories suggest that sex-based differences in hormonal, structural, and electrophysiologic factors are associated with this imbalance; we hypothesized that sex-based differences in health care access and utilization (HCAU) are also underlying factors. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether sex-based disparities in HCAU barriers exist among individuals with AF. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used data on patients with AF in the

Capturing Heterogeneity in Levels, Variability, and Couplings across Persons and Time with a Hierarchical Time-Varying Coefficient Formulation of the Multivariate Normal.

Time-varying coefficient modeling (TVCM), which represents regression coefficients as smooth functions of continuous time, provides a flexible framework for uncovering complex patterns of change in levels and associations in intensive longitudinal data. However, conventional TVCM remains limited to investigating directional effects across individuals. By introducing a TVCM formulation of the multivariate normal distribution, the present study extends TVCM to explore change in undirected associations (couplings) and variability, thereby broadening its utility for psychological research. We disc

Development and Validation of a Patient-Centered Scale to Evaluate Decision Aid Usability and Information Overload.

INTRODUCTION: Decision aids aim to improve the quality of and satisfaction with decision making. Few scales exist that directly evaluate decision aids from the patient's perspective, particularly with respect to information overload. METHODS: We developed a Decision Aid Evaluation Scale with domains assessing acceptability, satisfaction, cognitive load, and helpfulness for decision making. Cognitive interviews and iterative testing were performed. Convergent and discriminant construct validity were assessed by comparing the novel scale with domains from the validated Decisional Conflict Scale
