Reframing Darkness: An Exploration of Happiness Among Children With Visual Impairments in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Limited research in Ghana explores the emotional well-being of children with visual impairments (CwVIs). Guided by the stigma theory (ST), this study investigated how factors such as social stigma, resources and support systems shape their happiness. METHODS: A convergent parallel mixed-method study design was used across seven districts in five regions, involving 288 CwVIs (58.3% male and 41.7% female participants). Quantitative surveys assessed levels of happiness, while qualitative focus group discussions, interviews and observations provided deeper insights. The mixed approach

Family structure, adolescent mental health, and the role of advisors in the cultural and social context of South Korea.

Prior research consistently reports differences in mental health outcomes among adolescents between intact and non-intact families, highlighting the need to address these disparities. This study aims to investigate the moderating effect of advisers (counselors, teachers, or friends) on the mental health of adolescents from non-intact families. We conducted a cross-sectional study using data from the 2017 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey, a large, representative nationwide sample of adolescents. We included 61,572 middle and high school students living with at least one parent, catego

Psychiatry is not the science of unhappiness.

Psychiatry risks losing its conceptual boundaries as the scope of its concern expands to include all forms of human unhappiness. This editorial argues that the discipline must distinguish clearly between illness and adversity, recognising that not all suffering is pathological. Drawing on historical and contemporary debates - from Jaspers' foundational dualism to Engel's biopsychosocial model, and from diagnostic inflation to the medicalisation of social distress - the paper contends that integration without limits leads to dissolution. Psychiatry's legitimacy depends not on the eradication of

The generational happiness switch in Norway: the puzzle of miserable youth and happy seniors.

An alarming rise in youth ill-being is sweeping across many parts of the world. In Norway, surveys conducted since 1985 consistently identified young people as the happiest age group, while seniors ranked lowest in terms of well-being. Since the early 2010s, however, this pattern has reversed: happiness among seniors has increased, whereas the well-being of young people has declined sharply. Quantitative research attributes this shift to strained social relationships, mental health challenges, and growing anxiety about the future. Social media appears to exacerbate these difficulties, though i

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Other Predictors of Psychological Strain in College Students in a Post-Pandemic World.

The Covid-19 pandemic was associated with increases in negative mental health state for college students. In a post-pandemic environment, this negative mental health state seems to have lingered. We used factor analysis to uncover a latent variable that we called psychological strain, which represented an important combination of negative mental health effects many students have been experiencing, including mental health strain, mental instability, sadness, anxiety, and unhappiness. We then ran path analysis to see which factors most closely predicted psychological strain. As there have been c

Longitudinal Cross-Lagged Associations Between Depression, Anxiety, and Somatic Symptoms in Adolescents With Bullying Victimization: Multi-Level Evidence From Variable and Symptom Analyses.

Bullying victimization is associated with depressive, anxiety, and somatic symptoms in adolescence, but most longitudinal studies have examined these symptoms at the domain level and in general adolescent samples. Little is known about how these symptoms unfold over time among bullying-victimized adolescents, or which specific symptoms drive cross-domain propagation. This study examined longitudinal associations among depressive, anxiety, and somatic symptoms from domain- and symptom-level perspectives, with a non-victimized comparison group. This three-wave longitudinal study included 1,108 a
