Only 8 percent of the prostitutes were literate. Income per night varied from Rs 10 to Rs 30 for 72% of the prostitutes. Whereas only one third of the married women were happy with the profession, 95.92% of Devdasis liked the profession. Illiteracy, domestic unhappiness, deception, destitution, poor socio-ecomic status of parents, and religious custom of Devdasi were the important contributory factors for landing innocent girls or socially handicapped women into prostitution.

The present study has been carried out to assess the smoking habit among medical students and its relationship to demographic, social and psychological characteristics. Prevalence of smoking was found to be 30.79% in 854 students who responded to the questionnaire adequately. Unhappiness and transient feelings of depression are common normal experiences for many children. Persistent depressive illness occurs in about 2 per cent of children and seriously affects social, educational and emotional development. Drawing on Maturana's concept of structure determinism and Bowlby's attachment theory, a model of marital interactions is described based on the nature of the "fit" between each individual's belief systems, particularly those related to the fears inherent in intimacy. Two longitudinal studies of marital interaction were conducted using observational coding of couples attempting to resolve a high-conflict issue. We found that a different pattern of results predicts con-current marital satisfaction than predicts change in marital satisfaction over 3 years. Very few of these children have significant organic or psychological problems and little investigation is indicated. Previous research has suggested links between marital unhappiness and behaviour problems in children. A survey was carried out in a community based Child Psychiatric clinic in Ireland to investigate these links. Methods used involved self report questionnaires administered to mothers of forty-eight children attending the clinic. A control group was selected for comparison. Tests of correlation indicate significant associations between marital adjustment and behaviour problems for both clinic and control populations. Some possible mechanisms are suggested.

In recent years there has been growing conceptual interest in narcissism, coupled with the rapid development of several paper and pencil measures. Clearly, construct validation should be performed prior to the adoption of any measure. This study reports on the construct validation of four scales that purport to measure narcissism. A conceptual definition of narcissism is provided, and a number of empirical analyses are performed, including examination of internal consistency reliabilities, intercorrelations among the four narcissism scales, and correlations with related and unrelated measures.
