In an attempt to assess whether there are any characteristics which a majority of ordinary people regard as life-affirming or life-denying, a questionnaire was given to a pilot group of 167 respondents, representing three different age and social categories. A sample of 110 consecutive first admission young schizophrenic patients treated between 1964 and 1967 was rediagnosed in 1981. Among 92 survivors, 27 could be labelled as paraphrenics. We have developed a telemetric technique whereby maternal blood pressure, which is self-measured by pregnant women in their own homes using a Dinamap 1846 automated blood pressure recorder, can then be transmitted over the commercial telephone network into the Rosie Maternity Hospital in Cambridge, where it is computer-processed.
