One of the most salient components of older patients' mental disposition involves satisfaction with health. Low health satisfaction has been observed to be associated with anomia, unhappiness, high body concern, poor adjustment to the environment, low activity, and depression. Yet a number of issues in the area remain under-investigated. One such issue involves change over time in the elderly populace's general level of contentment with health. A longitudinal survey of adjustment to divorce in Cleveland, Ohio, suburbs was conducted with a matched sample of married persons in order to identify some of the common complaints, feelings, concerns, and health hazards among separated and divorced persons. Previous research has shown chronic pain patients to have elevated scores on the Hypochondriasis (Hs), Depression (D), and Hysteria (Hy) scales of the MMPI. Abortion in single girls in an increasing problem in Hong Kong. This paper is an attempt to look at the psychosocial factors in sexual behavior in a selected sample of girls. Of 100 girls requesting an abortion, 70% were educated to Form III level (grade 10 U.S. equivalent) and these did not come from broken or disturbed homes. The adequacy of their prepregnancy use of contraception was significantly and positively related to their level of formal education. These girls were all made pregnant by their boy-friends. Some aspects of their sexual behavior are described.

The developmental changes in the structure of attitudes toward mentally retarded children in elementary-school-aged students were investigated. Four orthogonal factors characterized their responses: General Negative Evaluation, General Positive Evaluation, Likeability, and Unhappiness. For the most part, increased age was associated with a decrease in negative stereotypes and an increase in a specific stereotype. The results were discussed in terms of contradictory findings in previous attitudinal research.

A method of treating depression based on an operant reinforcement perspective was evaluated with 29 depressed persons. The procedure included increased reinforcer utilization, behavioral contrast, overcorrection, reinforcer sampling and stimulus control by positive events. Retrospective comparisons between primary unipolar depression and depression secondary to anxiety in 65 inpatients revealed a number of differences. Secondary depression was associated with a significantly higher incidence of neurotic traits in childhood, chronic unhappiness, and unsupportive family. This is a summary report of the major findings of a study designed to examine the social and psychological implications of acquired deafness for adults of employment age, issued with a National Health Service hearing aid between 1970 and 1976 in the Greater London Area. Acquired deafness, long after rehabilitation, was found to cause considerable and serious personal unhappiness.

Administered the Child Abuse Potential Inventory to 65 abusing and 65 matched nonabusing parents. An item analysis indicated that 77 of the 160 Inventory items significantly discriminated between abusers and nonabusers. A discriminant analysis, which employed the 77 significant items, correctly classified 125, or 96% of the 130 Ss as abusers or nonabusers. Identical results were obtained from a stepwise multiple regression analysis. The stereotype of the older male homosexual is one of disengagement from the homosexual world, loneliness, rejection, depression and unhappiness. This typical picture of the ageing homosexual is not supported by the findings from 478 homosexual men in Australia with diverse backgrounds. There are no age differences in psychological well-being and involvement in the gay community. The older homosexual does believe he has less control for his sexual orientation and attempts to hide his homosexuality more than his younger counterparts. A study of 150 hotel prostitutes in Lagos was undertaken to determine their socioeconomic identity and, through an assessment of their health knowledge, attitude, and practice, their probable impact on public health.
