Real-time emotional responses to trigger sounds in misophonia: An ecological momentary assessment study.

Although misophonia is characterized by intense negative emotional responses, the temporal dynamics of these experiences in naturalistic settings are poorly understood. This study utilized ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to characterize the real-time emotional experiences of adults with misophonia outside of laboratory settings. Forty adults with misophonia completed EMA surveys for 10 days. Results indicated that trigger sounds elicited significant elevations in negative emotions, particularly irritability and anger, compared to non-trigger periods. Although most emotional responses sub

Pediatric burns: Key insights from cohort of 325 patients.

BACKGROUND: Burns are a common cause of morbidity and mortality in children, especially in developing countries like India. Unless fatal, burns can lead to lifelong disability, affecting social and psychological well-being of the child. It further exacerbates the financial strain on parents and adversely impacts the mental well-being of siblings. AIM: To understand the epidemiological profile as well as the psychosocial and economic impact of burns on patients and their families which may help us to devise strategies to manage and prevent these largely avoidable injuries. METHODS: An observa

Escitalopram and brain reactivity to aggressive stimuli in premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

BACKGROUND: Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a condition linked to the menstrual cycle and characterised by cyclic emotional distress, irritability and anger, which can disrupt social functioning. Intermittent selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor treatment is effective in alleviating symptoms, yet the neural underpinnings of its efficacy in PMDD remain unknown. AIMS: This randomised, placebo-controlled trial aimed to evaluate the impact of intermittent escitalopram treatment on PMDD symptoms and aggressiveness, and on neural responses to social provocation. METHOD: Women with PMDD

Effects of menstrual cycle phases and reproductive aging stages on arousal symptoms: observations from the Seattle Midlife Women's Health Study.

OBJECTIVE: Although investigators have devoted significant effort to understanding women's experiences of depressed mood and clinical depression during the menopausal transition and early postmenopause, they have focused less on women's experiences of emotional arousal, including emotions such as anxiety, irritability, and anger during these reproductive aging stages. The purpose of these analyses was to examine the influence of menstrual cycle phases and reproductive aging stages on women's reports of symptoms reflecting emotional arousal. METHODS: A subset of Seattle Midlife Women's Health

The relationship of job and life satisfaction with symptoms of anxiety, depression, and irritability/anger in nurses.

INTRODUCTION: The nursing profession involves substantial emotional and organizational demands, which may negatively affect nurses' mental health and overall satisfaction with life and work. OBJECTIVE: To assess the levels of anxiety, depression, and irritability/anger symptoms in nurses and examine their associations with life and job satisfaction. In this study, the HADS-M subscale assessing irritability/anger was used. It captures symptoms of irritability and anger but does not measure aggression or anger expression as behavioral constructs. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was co

The effects of intermittent escitalopram treatment on impulsivity and inattention in women with premenstrual irritability and anger.

BACKGROUND: Women diagnosed with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) report significant symptom relief when treated with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, but few studies have addressed the possibility of capturing this effect in behavioral, laboratory-based tests. This study examined the effects of intermittent treatment with escitalopram (vs. placebo) on a behavioral measure of impulsivity and inattentiveness in women reporting high levels of premenstrual irritability and anger. METHODS: Participants (N = 27) rated cardinal PMDD mood symptoms over three menstrual cycles using Visu

Novel Assessment of the Impact of Irritability on Physiological and Psychological Frustration Responses in Adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Irritability, typically defined as a proneness to anger, particularly in response to frustration, falls at the intersection of emotion and disruptive behavior. Despite well-defined translational models, there are few convergent findings regarding the pathophysiology of irritability. Most studies utilize computer-based tasks to examine neural responses to frustration, with little work examining stress-related responding to frustration in social contexts. The present study is the first to utilize the novel Frustration Social Stressor for Adolescents (FSS-A) to examine associations bet

An evaluation of the Ultimatum Game as a measure of irritability and anger.

The Ultimatum Game is an effective tool for understanding how social decision-making is influenced by emotions in both research and clinical settings. Previous findings have shown that the Ultimatum Game can evoke negative emotions, especially anger and aggression. In a sample of non-clinical adults (N = 143) we evaluated the sensitivity of an anger-infused version of the Ultimatum Game to individual differences in anger and irritability. Findings showed significant relationships between anger and aggressive behaviors in the Ultimatum game, but no association between irritability and aggressiv

Behavioral symptoms and treatment challenges for patients living with dementia: Hospice clinician and caregiver perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Dementia affects one in three older adults over age 85 and individuals with dementia constitute the fastest growing population of patients entering hospice care. While cognitive impairment is the hallmark of dementia, behavioral symptoms are reported in nearly all patients with advanced dementia, contributing to both the complexity of end-of-life care and caregiver burden. METHODS: This qualitative study involved semi-structured interviews with prescribing hospice clinicians and caregivers of patients living with dementia who previously received hospice services. Interviews incl

Intermittent escitalopram treatment and reactive aggression in women with premenstrual irritability and anger: A crossover study.

BACKGROUND: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) are the primary treatment for premenstrual mood symptoms and particularly effective in reducing reactive aggression in the forms of irritability and anger. The present study examined whether behavioral responses in laboratory measures of reactive aggression are influenced by medication with the SSRI escitalopram in women reporting high levels of premenstrual irritability/anger. METHODS: Participants (N = 34) rated the cardinal mood symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder over three menstrual cycles. During the second and third cyc

The distinction between irritability and anger and their associations with impulsivity and subjective wellbeing.

Irritability, anger, and impulsivity have important associations with psychological well-being. However, studying the internal relationships between such emotional constructs is challenging, largely because of the lack of precise operational definitions and extensively validated measurement tools. The aim of this study was to examine relationships between the above emotional constructs and how they relate to satisfaction with life and perceived negative impact on different life domains. Participants (N = 471) completed a self-report questionnaire online. Correlational analyses showed that high

Melatonin and aggressive behavior: A systematic review of the literature on preclinical and clinical evidence.

The melatonin system and circadian disruption have well-established links with aggressive behaviors; however, the biological underpinnings have not been thoroughly investigated. Here, we aimed at examining the current knowledge regarding the neurobiological and psychopharmacological involvement of the melatonin system in aggressive/violent behaviors. To this end, we performed a systematic review on Embase and Pubmed/MEDLINE of preclinical and clinical evidence linking the melatonin system, melatonin, and melatoninergic drugs with aggressive/violent behaviors. Two blinded raters performed an in

A first insight into the clinical manifestation of posttraumatic stress disorder in dementia: a systematic literature review.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a prevalent disorder worldwide and often co-occurs in dementia. Both have a major impact on disease burden and quality of life. PTSD may be difficult to recognize in dementia and a structured diagnostic method is lacking. In order to get insight into the clinical diagnostics of PTSD in dementia, this systematic literature review evaluates the clinical presentation of PTSD and other relevant symptoms in people with dementia. PubMed, PsycINFO, Embase, and CINAHL were searched for all publications through 30 December 2021. Articles were included which met t

Adolescent perspectives on depression as a disease of loneliness: a qualitative study with youth and other stakeholders in urban Nepal.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of research on the adolescent experience of depression in low- and middle-income countries. Criteria derived from research conducted primarily among adult Western populations inform current diagnostic standards for depression. These clinical categories are often used without exploration of their relevance to adolescent experience. Also, reliance on these categories may overlook other symptoms of depression that manifest in non-western settings. Cross-cultural qualitative work with adults in non-Western settings has suggested some differences with experience of depre

Increased pupil dilation to happy faces in children with hyperactive/impulsive symptoms of ADHD.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with disrupted emotional processes including impaired regulation of approach behavior and positive affect, irritability, and anger. Enhanced reactivity to emotional cues may be an underlying process. Pupil dilation is an indirect index of arousal, modulated by the autonomic nervous system and activity in the locus coeruleus-noradrenergic system. In the current study, pupil dilation was recorded while 8- to 12- year old children (n = 71, 26 with a diagnosis of ADHD and 45 typically developing), viewed images of emotional faces. Paren

In search of the 'self': Holistic rehabilitation in restoring cognition and recovering the 'self' following traumatic brain injury: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Following mild-moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI), an individual experiences a range of emotional changes. It is often difficult for the patient to reconcile with their post-injury persona, and the memory of pre-injury personhood is particularly painful. Insight into one's cognitive deficits subsequent to injury can lead to an existential crisis and a sense of loss, including loss of self. OBJECTIVE: Restoration of cognitive functions and reconciliation with loss of pre-traumatic personhood employing a holistic method of neuropsychological rehabilitation in a patient suffering

Brain reactivity during aggressive response in women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder treated with a selective progesterone receptor modulator.

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a psychiatric condition characterized by late luteal phase affective, cognitive, and physical impairment. The disorder causes significant suffering in about 5% of women in their reproductive age. Altered sensitivity of cognitive-affective brain circuits to progesterone and its downstream metabolite allopregnanolone is suggested to underlie PMDD symptomatology. Core mood symptoms include irritability and anger, with aggression being the behavioral outcome of these symptoms. The present study sought to investigate the neural correlates of reactive aggres
