A total of 208 former depressed patients were investigated by means of the personality inventory KSP and compared to 75 healthy volunteers who had never had an affective episode. By means of discriminant analysis 81.3% of the subjects could be correctly classified as former depressed patients or healthy volunteers. When patients in the diagnostic subgroups, unipolars, bipolars, patients with neurotic-reactive depressions and patients with unspecified depressions were compared to healthy volunteers, 85.4%, 83.0%, 84.2% and 86.4% respectively could be correctly classified. The paranoid disorders of five patients remitted after treatment with thymoleptic agents despite the absence of a full affective syndrome. Their clinical symptoms at admission included suspiciousness, hypervigilance, ideas of reference, hostility, belligerence, and delusions of persecution or of infidelity. Some had phasic disturbances with somatic complaints or prominent phobic anxiety symptoms, a family history of affective disorder, or prior responses to thymoleptic drugs. Administered to 106 married male and female residents of a retirement community the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) form of the SCL-90. Although no difference was found between males and females on an overall index of psychological distress, a discriminant function analysis indicated that three (Anxiety, Interpersonal Sensitivity, and Paranoid Ideation) of the nine scales provided maximum separation of the two groups. Results supported the conclusion that with marital status, education, and health controlled, male and female elderly Ss show distinct patterns of distress.

In previous work, investigators have found a relationship between marital discord and childhood conduct problems (aggression) in clinic samples. Given the wide variability of aggression found among hyperactive children, it would follow from previous work that child aggression may be associated with marital discord in a hyperactive population. Pony mares (n=480) and 16 stallions were assigned to four herds of 60 mares and one stallion (large herds) and to 12 herds of 20 mares and one stallion (small herds). Fifty-two persons (26 married couples) competed in a complex reaction time task and set durations of 100 db noise for either their respective spouses or an opposite sex stranger. Each S's punitive settings were countered by four presequenced counteraggression strategies. Wives were responsive to a broader range of aggression reduction strategies than were husbands. Results suggest that minimum retaliation is most consistently effective across sex and may be a behavior skill necessary to avoid escalation of aggression and to keep communication channels open.

Changes in verbal affective expression within sessions of two psychotherapy groups run along group-analytic lines were measured using the Process Affective Scoring System developed by Gibbard & Hartman (1973). Tape recordings of group sessions were rated by trained undergraduate students for presence or absence of verbal affect.
