Mental health of nurses and doctors in Ukraine during wartime: nationwide cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Since the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, health facilities and healthcare workers in Ukraine have been systematically targeted. Despite growing calls to prioritise their mental health, robust evidence on the magnitude of the problem and its determinants remains limited. AIMS: To estimate the prevalence of mental health problems among doctors and nurses in Ukraine, and examine their association with key exposures. METHOD: We conducted a cross-sectional survey between May and September of 2025, in a non-probabilistic sample of doctors and nurses working in Ukraine. The survey

Factors associated with verbal bullying in adolescents in the Amazon, according to the PeNSE, Brazil, 2015.

School violence can affect all people present in the institution environment and generate fear in students who suffer aggression. Verbal bullying has an impact on who experiences it and can be one of the doors to reach physical violence. The sample consisted of 23,977 adolescents from seven Amazônia states in Brazil. Multinomial regression was performed to verify the association of variables with categories of verbal bullying. The level of statistical significance of 5% was adopted. The prevalence among adolescents in the Amazon in Brazil who were victims of verbal bullying at school was 4.3%

Exploratory Diagnostic Performance of Salivary Cortisol for Initial Assessment of Recent Exposure to Interpersonal Physical Violence: A Preliminary Study.

Background/Objectives: Enhancing the objectivity of the assessment of interpersonal physical violence has become a challenge in modern forensic sciences. The use of biomarker assessments, such as cortisol, has become a promising diagnostic tool. Moreover, this hormone can be assessed non-invasively by measuring its concentration in saliva. This preliminary study evaluated salivary cortisol concentrations following recent interpersonal physical violence and assessed their apparent exploratory diagnostic performance for distinguishing violence-exposed individuals from controls. Methods: A study

'What doesn't kill you doesn't always make you stronger': The impact of repeated exposure to adverse life events on mental health.

BACKGROUND: Repeated exposure to adversity is universal to the human experience and may impact mental health negatively. However, competing hypotheses predict that repeated adversity leads to either sensitisation or habituation. METHODS: Using a 22-year Australian population-based panel study, we examined changes in mental health following repeated exposure to seven common adverse life events in adulthood. Mixed-effects regression models estimated the relationship between repeated exposure to adverse life events of the same type and its impact on the Mental Health Inventory-5 score. RESULTS:

DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study assessed all pregnant women 25 years or older who delivered at Centre Hospitalier Intercommunal André-Grégoire, a s

Exposure to intimate partner violence and overweight among children aged six to thirty months.

The objective of this article is to investigate the relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV) and overweight in children aged six to thirty months. We conducted a cross-sectional population-based study in Campos Elíseos, Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. IPV was measured using the Brazilian version of the Revised Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS2) and nutritional status was assessed using BMI-for-age z-scores calculated using the Anthro software package. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the relationships of interest. Approximately 52% of children were overweigh

To be wounded is to be read: disability and the structures of nonviolent conflict from Shakespeare to the Victorians.

This article proposes nonviolent conflict as a conceptual framework for examining struggles organised through the social interpretation and mediation of embodied vulnerability rather than through direct physical force. Bringing disability studies into conversation with theories of vulnerability, epistemic injustice, pain, and narrative ethics, it asks how wounded or impaired bodies become sites of contested authority, credibility, care, access, and representation. Through theoretically informed comparative close readings of Titus Andronicus, King Lear, A Christmas Carol, and Jane Eyre, the art

Prevalence and associated factors of interpersonal violence in organized sport in a population-based sample of Quebec (Canada) adolescents: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies usually examine interpersonal violence (IV) in sport using convenience samples, potentially biasing exposure estimates. This study aimed to estimate IV prevalence and identify associated factors in a population-based sample of Quebec adolescents. METHODS: A cross-sectional population-based sample (Study on the Experiences of Adolescents in Sport Contexts in Quebec - ÉVAQ) nested within the representative Quebec Health Survey of High School Students (QHSHSS) was employed. Between November 2022 and June 2023, students from 485 high schools were recruited for the ÉVA

Global Prevalence of Client Violence Against Social Workers: A Meta-Analysis.

Client violence adversely affects social workers' psychology and professional practice. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is one of the first studies to synthesise the prevalence of client violence among social workers. This meta-analysis synthesised quantitative evidence on client violence prevalence. We searched for relevant articles in Scopus, Web of Science, and Academic Search Premier up to March 2025 and screened them using predefined criteria. The study quality was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist. A random-effects model was used for meta

Improvement in Domestic Violence and Aggression in Comorbid ADHD and Conduct Disorder Following Methylphenidate Initiation: A Case Report.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder (CD) are diagnoses that are frequently comorbid. CD is characterised by persistent dissocial, aggressive, and defiant behaviors that defy age-appropriate expectations. This is the case of a 15-year-old male adoptee referred to Tier 3 Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) for severe aggression, impulsivity, and domestic violence. The patient exhibited coercive control toward his mother, physical violence involving weapons, and property damage, necessitating police involvement and risking family placement breakdown

Efficacy of Technology-Augmented Behavioral Counseling for Risky Firearm Behaviors: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Firearm violence is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality for US adolescents and emerging adults (A/EAs). Health care visits are an important opportunity to provide preventive counseling addressing risky firearm behaviors (RFBs), which increase fatal and nonfatal firearm injury risk, as well as associated negative health and social outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of a technology-augmented behavioral counseling intervention addressing RFBs among A/EAs seeking emergency department (ED) treatment. Associations between maternal age at first birth and parenting behaviour among migrant and displaced mothers on the Thailand-Myanmar border.

BACKGROUND: Early parenthood is an established risk factor for poor maternal and child outcomes. Research on the association between maternal age at first birth and parenting behaviour remains limited in displacement contexts in low- and middle-income countries, despite the high prevalence of adolescent and young motherhood in these settings. OBJECTIVE: This study examined associations between maternal age at first birth and three domains of parenting behaviour (positive parenting, physical maltreatment, and emotional maltreatment) among migrant and displaced mothers from Myanmar. Adverse Childhood Experiences and HIV Prevalence Among Adolescent Girls and Young Women in Rural South Africa: The Role of Household and Community Violence.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are common among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Sub-Saharan Africa, who also face a high burden of HIV. While prior research has focused on behavioural pathways linking ACEs and HIV, less attention has been given to the broader spectrum of adversities themselves, particularly household and community violence. This study examined the association between cumulative and individual ACEs and HIV prevalence among AGYW in rural South Africa. This cross-sectional study analysed data from the 2017 follow-up visit of the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPT
