A group of male adolescent sexual offenders were divided into three groups: Courtship Disorders (Exhibitionism, Toucherism and Obscene Phone Calls), Sexual Assaults, and Pedophilic Offenses. Group I offenders tended to come from a less disorganized family background, were better adjusted to school and in the community and were seen by clinicians as less seriously disturbed than the adolescents in the other two groups. Adolescents who run away from home frequently give many reasons for their behavior, but rarely has an examination of physical maltreatment as a precipitating factor for leaving home been carefully conducted. The Conflict Tactics Scale, a measure of how families resolve conflicts, was completed by 199 adolescents who ran away to a youth shelter. Some 78% of the adolescents self-reported significant physical violence directed toward themselves by a parent in the one year prior to their running away. This study looks at child abuse as a part of family violence and includes a literature review of the previous Finnish studies on child abuse. The data of the study comes from a poll conducted in Finland in the autumn of 1981 of 530 of the Finnish population older than 14 years of age: 3% of respondents had observed physical violence towards small children and 1% towards teenagers; 44% of the respondents were of the opinion that physical punishment of children was needed at least on certain occasions. Staff members from an American institution, Israeli institutions, and a number of American group homes were asked to rate the social tolerability of 84 types of behavior that reflected either skill deficits or social maladaptation. There was considerable agreement among the three sample groups about the relative rank ordering of the 84 items. Physical violence and socially disgusting behavior were perceived as most intolerable whereas deficits in academic skills were least intolerable. The Israeli sample was uniformly less tolerant than either American sample.

We studied 101 inmates of a county jail for women who were randomly selected from those referred for psychiatric evaluation. Eighty-six percent had a history of psychiatric hospitalization; 94% had prior arrest records, 50% of these for felonies. More than half met the criteria for involuntary hospitalization. To characterize violent behavior in hospitalized medical and surgical patients, we reviewed documented violent incidents at the San Francisco General Hospital during a two-year period.
