Evaluating the heterogeneous treatment effects of major depression polygenic risk scores on self-harm using causal forest.

BACKGROUND: Self-harm, defined as non-fatal self-inflicted harm regardless of suicidal intent, is a critical global health issue influenced by the interaction between genetic and environmental factors. AIMS: This study investigates the causal effect of major depression polygenic risk scores (MD PRS) on self-harm in individuals of European ancestry and explores how environmental and personal factors moderate this effect. METHODS: Using data from 91,778 UK Biobank participants, we compared the top 10% with the highest MD PRS (the genetically vulnerable group) against the remainder. The causal

Past political violence and interpersonal violence against children and youth in Africa.

Political violence (the use of force by groups for political motives) adversely affects children and youth, but there is limited rigorous evidence on whether exposure to political violence is associated with a higher risk of subsequent interpersonal violence against adolescents and young adults. We estimate this association with multi-country micro data from nine African countries, merging nationally representative Violence Against Children and Youth Survey (VACS) data with Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED) for Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Uganda, Za

The Shift in Delivery of Care from Hospital to Community Care Settings: What Changes in Terms of Healthcare Workers' Exposure to Violence.

Background: Despite the general interest in WPV against healthcare workers, there is evidence that this topic has comparatively fewer studies conducted in the context of community settings than in hospital settings. Given the current general transition of care from hospital to community, this study aims to analyze whether community settings present different characteristics in comparison with hospital settings on this topic in Italy. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted from 2020 to 2024 on aggressions reported by HCWs in hospitals and community settings belonging to a Lo

Generational differences in perceptions and acceptance of violence in emergency rooms: a cross-sectional study in Thailand.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Violence in hospital emergency rooms (ERs) presents serious risks to patient safety and healthcare workers. This study examined generational differences in perceptions and acceptance of violent behavior in hospital ERs in Thailand. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 615 residents living in communities surrounding seven hospitals. Respondents were classified i

Police Violence Exposure Among Young Adults in a U.S. National Probability Sample.

Police violence is a critical social determinant of health in the United States, but there is an absence of data on prevalence and sociodemographic disparities from national probability samples. This study aimed to determine the past-year prevalence of physical, sexual, psychological, and neglectful police violence exposure among young adults in the United States and to identify inequities in exposure. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the National Survey of Poly-Victimization and Suicide Risk, a population-based probability sample of noninstitutionalized young adults (18-29 years; N

Structural and role-based workplace mistreatment in clinical training: a cross-sectional study of intern and resident physicians.

BACKGROUND: Workplace mistreatment is common in medical training, but some forms may be embedded in routine clinical roles and workloads rather than occurring only as isolated interpersonal incidents. Intern physicians, who occupy a transitional position between student and physician roles, may be particularly vulnerable. This study examined the prevalence and patterns of workplace mistreatment in a clinical training environment, compared intern physicians with resident physicians (referred to as “research assistants” in the Turkish medical training system), and identified commonly reported be

Patterns of child sexual assault in Laghouat, Algeria: a hospital-based forensic study (2017-2024).

BACKGROUND: Child sexual assault constitutes a major public health and medico-legal challenge worldwide, particularly in socio-cultural contexts where disclosure is limited and underreporting is widespread. In Algeria, social stigma, fear of family dishonor, and cultural silence substantially hinder detection, reporting, and appropriate medico-legal management of sexual violence involving minors. This study aimed to describe the epidemiological, socio-economic, and medico-legal characteristics of reported child sexual assault cases in Laghouat and to explore factors associated with delayed med

Intimate partner violence and survivor-reported partner characteristics in Ghana, Kenya, and Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) remains a major global public health and humanrights challenge, with a disproportionate burden in sub-Saharan Africa. While women's experiences of IPV are well documented, fewer population-level studies examine survivor-reported partner characteristics and relational dynamics associated with perpetration. OBJECTIVE: To estimate IPV prevalence in selected sub-Saharan African countries and examine demographic, socio-relational, attitudinal, and survivor-reported partnerstructural characteristics associated with IPV. Delving into the delays: a cross-sectional study on healthcare-seeking following episodes of violence against older adults in Brazil, 2016-2022.

BACKGROUND: Delaying healthcare after episodes of violence can allow hidden injuries and trauma in older adults to worsen. It increases the risk of complications, prolonged recovery, and reduced functional independence. Such delays also heighten emotional distress, potentially leading to anxiety, depression, or long-term psychological harm. OBJECTIVE: To investigate associated factors for delayed healthcare-seeking among older adults victims of violence in Brazil, from 2016 to 2022. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using 154,991 reported cases of violence against individuals
