A combination of preventive methods have been used to reduce dental caries in children residing in a fluoridated area of Southeastern Michigan. These children had very low restorative treatment levels. The methods used include dental health education, prophylaxis, pit and fissure sealants, topical application of fluoride and restorative care. Prophylaxis, sealant and fluoride procedures were repeated every 6 months. Sealant was applied to all caries-free posterior teeth in the mouth. Twenty dentulous subjects undergoing clinical therapy for severe periodontitis were used to determine the longitudinal effects of bacterial plaque reduction in vitro lymphocyte transformation. During the course of a malnutrition study, the efficiency of two diets has been followed by clinical observations and biochemical tests. Nutritional assessment of white persons over 59 who participated in the 1973 Missouri Nutrition Survey was based upon biochemical measurements, dietary intakes using food frequency histories, anthropometric measurements, and a dental examination. There were three major nutritionally related problems: poor dental health, obesity, and anemia. The infant food industry must bear a considerable burden of blame as a result of "unethical" advertising. Responses have most recently included various journalistic and legal actions. There is a need for revised roles for the infant food industry, and for mechanisms to monitor intrinsically harmful practices.

The beneficial effects of comprehensive dental prophylaxis programs are well recognized. In order to study the factors determining the effectiveness of these programs, 28 periodontal recall patients were subjected to monthly professional mechanical tooth cleanings. To detect the extent of subclinical infection during an outbreak of infectious hepatitis in a low-cost, high-density housing development, serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT) levels were measured in 390 of the 1650 residents.Elevated SGOT values were found in 17.4% of those tested.
