Thirty-one children with behavioural problems and learning difficulties were allergy tested for sensitivity to salicylates, artificial colours and flavours, eighteen children had a positive response, and 15 of these were given the Australian Version of the Feingold K.P. diet. Ninety-three per cent responded with improved behaviour in the areas of overactivity, distractability, impulsiveness and excitability. Sleep and enuresis problems were resolved partially or completely. This study demonstrates that the aforementioned elimination diet significantly affects behaviour.

Cardiac output, cardiopulmonary (CPBV) and total (TBV) blood volumes, vascular reactivity to norepinephrine and dopamine B hydroxylase (DBH) were determined in 41 borderline hypertensives patients in comparison with 28 normal subjects. Cardiac output (P less than 0.001) and CPBV/TBV ratio (P less than 0.01) were significantly increased. The ratio was directly correlated to the pressor-response to norepinephrine (P less than 0.01) and the DBH level (P less than 0.005). Serial measurements of urinary adrenaline, noradrenaline, and 11-hydroxycorticosteroid excretion were performed on 32 healthy men under two conditions of work stress; piecework and work on assembly line. A statistically significant increase in adrenaline, noradrenaline, and 11-hydroxycorticosteroids was observed for piecework and assembly line workers compared with salaried and 'ordinary' workers. The results support the assumption that psychosocial factors of an everyday type have significant effects on the sympathoadrenomedullary and adrenocortical function.

In an attempt to elucidate the ECG changes associated with the SCMS, we have applied the propranolol test in 35 of our patients suffering from this syndrome. In subjects with cervical spinal cord transections, hypertension due to sympathetic nervous overactivity resulted in a rise in plasma dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DbetaH), the peak occurring 3 to 5 min after the peak blood pressure response. This indicates that DbetaH may be released from sympathetic nerve terminals during sympathetic activity in man, and emphasizes the importance of sample timing in acute studies on DbetaH.

Changes in gastric mucosal microcirculation in rats were studied by using the method of intra-aortic injection of India ink, followed by microdissection of the mucosa. A three-part study on mineral metabolism in patients with classical rheumatoid arthritis is described. In the first two parts, biochemical abnormalities were revealed suggestive of parathyroid over-activity, and in the third part, observation on calcium absorption provides a hyperparathyroid pattern. The importance of these findings in relation to demineralisation of bone in rheumatoid arthritis is discussed.

The effect of hypoxia, exercise, and thermal stress on myocardial metabolism have been widely investigated, but little attention has been paid to studying the effects of a combination of these stress. The influence of hypoxia as modified by physical exertion (swimming) and cold stress was therefore studied. The aetiology of senile osteoporosis was investigated in a series of elderly normal persons (mean age 76.8 years) who were compared to 18-19 year old normal controls.
