Our objective was to study the effect of vitamin D3 (VD) on hepatocellular oxidative-nitrosative stress and pro/anti-inflammatory cytokines in relation to nitric oxide (NO) formation and NO synthase (NOS) levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). After T2DM induction by high-fat diet and a single streptozotocin injection (25 mg/kg b. w.), male Wistar rats were treated with/without VD (1,000 IU/kg b. w., 30 days). Oxidative stress/inflammation and NOS/NO were assessed by flow cytometry, RT-qPCR, western blotting, and ELISA. A 3.3-fold decrease in serum 25(OH)D3 was established in diabetic rats

A 68-year-old male presented with a three-month history of a painless, non-resolving mass in the left upper eyelid, unresponsive to a prior course of anti-inflammatory treatment. Orbital computed tomography (CT) revealed a well-defined, nodular soft-tissue density lesion in the lateral aspect of the orbit, adjacent to the orbital lobe of the lacrimal gland. The mass was successfully excised under local nerve block anesthesia. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of cysticercosis. Postoperative recovery was uneventful, with complete resolution of the eyelid deformity observed a

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Introduction: Cysticercosis is a systemic parasitic disease caused by the larvae of the tapeworm Taenia and has varied clinical manifestations. Ocular involvement can be intraocular or extraocular and can mimic various etiologies and patterns of strabismus. This study reports 3 cases of orbital myocysticercosis mimicking clinical presentation of inverse Duane's retraction syndrome and discuss the clues to the clinical diagnosis. Methods: Retrospective review of medical records of three patients with medial rectus muscle cysticercosis with clinical findings mimicking acquired inverse Duane's re

PURPOSE: Intraocular cysticercosis in the sub-macular location is a rare but potentially blinding disease. The management requires immediate surgical management and anti-parasitic medications. We present a case of subretinal cysticercosis that was managed with a novel method of intravenous methylprednisolone administration before and after it was surgically removed.
OBSERVATIONS: A 17-year-old Indian female patient presented to our clinic with a history of vision deterioration through the last 27 days in her left eye (OS). Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/20 in the right eye (OD) an

INTRODUCTION: Cysticercosis, a parasitic infection caused by Taenia solium, is often contracted through the consumption of contaminated undercooked vegetables, pork, or beef. Ocular involvement, although rare, can have severe consequences if untreated. This case report highlights the importance of prompt diagnosis and treatment of ocular cysticercosis.
CASE DISCUSSION: This case report presents a case of a 40-year-old male who presented with redness and a white structure in his right eye following self-removal of a foreign body. A history of pork consumption was noted. Slit lamp examination r

Cysticercosis, a parasitic ailment arising from the larval phase of Taenia solium, stands as a major health issue in the developing world. The encysted larvae can invade various body parts, with a higher prevalence in the brain, eye, skeletal muscle, and subcutaneous tissues. Isolated myocysticercosis is a rare entity and is often found to be associated with the involvement of the central nervous system. Nonetheless, we report a case of isolated myocysticercosis of the gastrocnemius muscle devoid of any systemic implications. The purpose of this case report is to consider myocysticercosis as a

Trochleodynia is described as a headache caused by peritrochlear inflammation. It presents with tenderness in the trochlear area with exacerbation of vertical eye movements. It is principally idiopathic, but sometimes it is seen in association with other causes like sinusitis or rarely with immune mediated diseases.Cysticercosis is a tissue infection caused by the larval form of the parasite, Taenia solium. The parasite can infect the brain, muscle, eye and other tissues. The presenting features vary according to the site of lodgement of the larva. The extraocular muscles of the eye are the mo

This case report aims to investigate the etiology of a pseudo-hypopyon in a 10-year-old boy with elevated intraocular pressure and progressive deterioration of visual acuity. The report seeks to elucidate potential underlying causes, clinical features, and diagnostic challenges associated with this rare ocular condition. The patient initially presented with a floating, white, circular object in the left eye, which progressed to redness, pain, and high intraocular pressure despite treatment with anti-inflammatory eye drops. Examination findings included gray-white deposits in the anterior chamb

A 30-year-old male presented with acute painful monocular diminution of vision, without any history of trauma or illness. Although the fundus image may resemble other retinal diseases, ophthalmic ultrasonography (US) was critical in detecting the problem. In the US, several scolexes were seen, indicating cysticerci, which are the larval stage of Tenia worm, infecting the optic nerve sheath at its scleral insertion. Only oral steroids were used because the inflammatory and toxic effects of albendazole-induced scolex-lysis on optic nerve function were uncertain. The authors reported no deteriora

Suprasellar cysticercosis is a rare entity. Only a few cases are reported in the literature.1 Clinically, present with visual loss and endocrinopathy and radiologically mimic craniopharyngioma, cystic pituitary adenoma, and Rathke cleft cyst.2 We present the case of a 34-year-old woman with a history of diminution of vision for 2 months. On examination, her visual acuity was 6/9 bilaterally, per the Snellen chart. The visual field showed incomplete temporal hemianopia in the right eye and a severely depressed field in the left eye. She was evaluated with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the

One of the most dangerous parasite infections, cysticercosis, is found practically everywhere in the world. Cysticercus cellulosae is the larval stage of the swine tapeworm Taenia solium, which causes cysticercosis. Orbital or ocular cysticercosis (OOC) is an avoidable cause of blindness. There are two types of ocular cysticercosis: intraocular (in the anterior chamber, subretinal space, or vitreous) and extraocular (in the orbital tissues or subconjunctival space). Here, we report a rare case of extraocular muscle cysticercosis that presented as a solitary, well-defined lobulated mass near th

Cysticercosis is a rare condition associated with the development of cysticercus (larval form) of Taenia solium (pork tapeworm), within an intermediate host. Accidental ingestion of infectious eggs is most likely the cause of humans becoming intermediate hosts. The most common site for larval cysts is the central nervous system followed by vitreous humor of the eye, striated muscle, and, in rare cases, subcutaneous and other tissues. Isolated muscular involvement with nonspecific symptoms makes this condition challenging to diagnose. We present an unusual case of cysticercus in the sternocleid

This case highlights the atypical presentation of Foster-Kennedy syndrome (FKS) associated with Neurocysticercosis (NCC), a prevalent cause of space-occupying lesions in areas endemic to the parasite. We report a newly diagnosed case of NCC in a 13-year-old boy who presented with a one-day history of abnormal movements of the left side of the body and no ocular complaints. Fundus examination of the patient revealed temporal disc pallor and a cup disc ratio (CDR) of 0.6 in the right eye suggesting unilateral optic disc atrophy and a hyperaemic disc with CDR 0.3 and blood vessel tortuosity in th
