BACKGROUND: Primary vitreous cyst is a clinical variant delineated by the existence of a vesicle within the vitreous cavity from birth. This particular disease tends to be uncommon, and the underlying mechanisms contributing to its pathogenesis remain obscure.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old male patient manifested blurry vision and floaters in his right eye, a symptomology first noticed three months prior. Upon slit-lamp examination, a pigmented, round, 1 papilla diameter-sized mass was discerned floating in the vitreous. A meticulous examination of the floaters was conducted using an array

Plague, caused by Yersinia pestis, is a widespread threat to endangered black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigripes) and their primary prey, prairie dogs (Cynomys spp.). Wildlife biologists most commonly manage plague using insecticides to control fleas, the primary vectors of Y. pestis. We tested edible baits containing the insecticides lufenuron and/or nitenpyram in prairie dogs. During a laboratory study, we treated 26 white-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys leucurus) with lufenuron at 300 mg/kg body mass. All animals remained clinically healthy over the 9 wk monitoring period. Although serum lufenur

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is the most common parasitic infection of the central nervous system and is typically diagnosed through visualization of the cysts in the cerebral parenchyma by neuro-imaging. However, neuro-imaging may not detect extraparenchymal neurocysticercosis (EPNCC), which is a rare manifestation of the disease involving the subarachnoid, meningeal, and intraventricular spaces. We report 2 cases of extraparenchymal neurocysticercosis, and discuss the diagnostic challenges and management of this entity.
METHODS: Two cases were identified through clinical records.

Intraocular cysticercosis with central nervous system involvement is not that rare. We report a male child with a right-sided painful blind eye who had intraocular cysticercosis and granuloma in the left frontal lobe of the brain. There was an incidental finding of chronic inflammation in the choroid of that eye supported by histopathology. Immunohistochemistry for T-cells marker and B-cells marker was variable. The patient was treated with antiparasitic, anti-epileptic medications, and oral steroids subsequently.

AIM: To study parasitic eye diseases in a tertiary institute of North-east India by live examination of parasites, rapid staining, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
METHODS: A 12-year retrospective analysis was performed and all patients diagnosed with ocular parasitic diseases were identified. Examination under a compound microscope, fluorescein staining, and scanning electron microscopy were done.
RESULTS: A total of 160 ocular parasitosis cases were identified. The cases for which rapid staining and SEM studies were done included Cysticercosis (n = 18, 11.25%), Hydatidosis (n =

We present a unique case of asymptomatic NCC that was accidently diagnosed on radiological investigations after a road traffic accident. An Ophthalmologic consult was sought to rule out intraocular or optic nerve cysticercosis. Fundoscopy showed multiple white-pale yellow lesions in the right eye which on ultrasonography confirmed cyst lined by a cyst wall consistent with subretinal cysticercosis. The patient was treated with diode laser photocoagulation. A high index of suspicion is required to diagnose NCCin endemic areas. In the right eye which on ultrasonography confirmed cyst lined by a c

Ultrasonography findings have been used to diagnose and treat 10 cases of orbital cysticercosis. Although oral prednisolone has a key role in symptomatic alleviation, 3-day albendazole has been demonstrated to be curative without any recurrence.

A 20-year-old vegetarian male presented with a history of painful diminution of vision in the right eye for the past month. The patient had dense vitritis. B-scan ultrasonography (USG) revealed two cysts with scolices, one subretinally along with retinal detachment and another one in vitreous cavity. Orbital USG revealed no cystic lesions in the orbit or extraocular muscle. He underwent 23 gauge pars plana vitrectomy. Both intravitreal and subretinal cysts were cut and aspirated using cutter and removed from the eye, and silicon oil was injected. Postoperatively he was started on oral steroids

A 4-year-old male child presented to us with a paraspinal pseudo-tumor over the mid-back region with pain being his only symptom. On initial ultrasonography, it was presumed to be a nerve sheath tumor, but on an excision biopsy and histopathology, it proved to be a subcutaneous cysticercosis. Furthermore, an MRI of the brain showed a ring enhancing lesion with vasogenic edema, which confirmed the diagnosis of a neurologically symptomless neurocysticercosis. We treated the patient with albendazole and a short course of dexamethasone. There was complete resolution of the painful subcutaneous swe

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Cysticercosis is a condition in which humans are infected by the larval form of the pork tapeworm Tenia solium. Cysticercosis in humans is common in the cerebral tissue but rare in the tongue.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, the authors report a rare case of a 38-year-old male with neurocysticercosis and cysticercosis of the tongue. The patient presented with a complaint of loss of consciousness for 4-5 min. Local examination of his oral cavity revealed a swelling of ~2×2 cm on the tongue. An MRI of the brain showed various stages of neurocysticercosis involving the neur

A female patient in her 20s presented with a bulbar conjunctival mass lesion that was diagnosed as nodular scleritis. It was treated with topical and oral steroids in another hospital. Imaging was done using anterior segment optical coherence tomography and ultrasound biomicroscopy, which helped to rule out scleritis and subconjunctival cysticercosis. Histopathology of the excision biopsy specimen revealed fungal filaments. Topical antifungals were started, and the condition resolved without recurrence after therapy. Although rare, infections should be considered in the differential diagnosis

Human cysticercosis caused by the larval stage of the pork tapeworm-Taenia solium, is a potentially dangerous systemic disease with vague clinical manifestations. Subcutaneous and muscular tissues are most commonly involved followed by, the eye and brain. A variety of clinical presentations, pathology that ranges from simple cysts to calcified lesions, and limited familiarity with the parasitic infection can make it challenging to diagnose. Cysticercosis when present as an isolated lesion. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) can play an important role in the early and rapid detection of thi

Ocular cysticercosis is a sparsely reported condition, requiring urgent management. The gold standard for diagnosis is an in toto extraction of the cyst with subsequent histopathology. The procedure can be demanding in contrast to the frequently adopted practice of in vivo cyst lysis. The latter, however, obviates a conventional biopsy. We reviewed published optical coherence tomography (OCT) images of ocular cysticercosis for their suitability to surrogate a conventional biopsy and identified commonly reported features. We also used triple masking and ascertained the observer agreement on ide

INTRODUCTION: Cysticercosis is caused by parasitic infestation mainly by the larval form of Taenia solium. Orbital cysticercosis may involve both the intraocular structures and orbit particularly the extraocular muscles. The clinical manifestations are caused mainly by the mass effect of the cyst in the initial period resulting in ocular motility restriction and proptosis and depends primarily on the site of the lesion.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here we report a case of 27 years old male with orbital apex syndrome secondary to myocysticercosis.
DISCUSSION: Orbital myocysticercosis often mimics vari

BACKGROUND: It can hardly be disputed that a school environment should be conducive or, at the very least, not prohibitive to effective learning. The provision of fair, equal and barrier-free access to education is referred to as inclusive education. South Africa supports a policy of inclusive schooling, striving to accommodate all children, including those with disabilities, in mainstream schools. This article sets out to prove that noise control in classrooms is a relevant, yet neglected, aspect of inclusive classroom design in South Africa and requires specific attention.
