Submacular cysticercosis in two cases: Course and outcome.

Ocular manifestations due to cysticercosis may involve the vitreous cavity or subretinal space in the posterior segment of the eye. Management of subretinal cysticercosis is challenging, especially if it involves the submacular region. Removal of submacular cysticercosis (SMC) requires utmost care and competent expertise. In recent times, modern vitreo-retinal equipment has improved the outcome of SMC. On the contrary, untreated SMC run a high risk of spontaneous rupture, liberation of toxin from dying worm, and intense intraocular inflammation threatening vision eventually. In the present rep

Case Report: Molecular Identification of Larval Taenia martis Infection in the Pouch of Douglas.

Taenia martis is a tapeworm dwelling in the intestine of mustelids and a rare zoonotic cysticercosis pathogen in its larval stage. The metacestode is morphologically very similar to more prevalent cysticercosis parasites, such as the larvae of Taenia solium and Taenia crassiceps, and may be indistinguishable from other metacestodes on histological sections. However, the epidemiology of human T. martis infections is different, and for prognosis, prevention, and detection of natural parasite reservoirs, the species should be identified. We here report the molecular identification of a T. martis

Myocysticercosis as a Rare Cause of Hand Swelling involving Thenar Group of Muscles: A Case Report.

Larval form of Taenia solium causes cysticercosis that commonly involves the central nervous system. Other sites of manifestation are eye, gastrointestinal system, skeletal muscles and subcutaneous tissues. Isolated muscular involvement is rare with only a handful of cases reported in the literature. We present this case of an isolated symtomatic hand swelling due to Myocysticercosis which pose diagnostic dilemma. This should be considered in differential diagnosis in our developing nation and especially in endemic region. High resolution ultrasound of the hand (thenar region) helped in the di

Persistent asymptomatic vitreous cyst with ten years follow-up: A case report.

Asymptomatic free floating vitreous cyst with macular coloboma constantly been stable for 10 years is a rarely reported case. Here, we report a case of 30-year-old male who presented to us with best corrected visual acuity of 6/12 and 6/18 in right and left eye, respectively. On slit-lamp examination anterior segment was normal. His fundus examination showed a solitary free floating cyst in the vitreous in right eye and bilateral macular coloboma. Blood tests for toxoplasmosis and cysticercosis were negative. The patient had no symptoms, so we decided to follow the patient without any treatmen

Orbital cysticercosis: clinical features and management outcomes.

AIM: To describe the clinical and radiological features of orbital cysticercosis and its management outcome. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A retrospective analysis of consecutive cases of orbital cysticercosis between January 2008 and January 2018. The management outcome was classified into good, fair, and poor depending upon the resolution of the clinical features and status of the cyst and scolex in the imaging studies. RESULTS: A total of 61 patients with a mean age of 24.33± 31.04 years were included. The male: female ratio was 1.9:1. Pain, with or without prominence of the eye was the most commo

[Disseminated cysticercosis affecting the brain, the eye and the skin on a Senegalese patient].

Cysticercosis is a neglected tropical disease set as health priority by WHO. Most of the reported cases included isolated types of cysticercosis affecting the skin, the eyes or the brain . Disseminated types, however, are rare. We here report a case of disseminated cysticercosis affecting the brain, the eyes and the skin in a Senegalese female patient aged 66 years admitted with headaches and chronic seizures. Clinical examination showed cerebellar syndrome associated with generalized and painless nodular subcutaneous lesions. Diagnosis was confirmed based on histopathological examination of s

Dietary Bacillus spp. enhanced growth and disease resistance of weaned pigs by modulating intestinal microbiota and systemic immunity.

AIM: The purpose of the present study was to describe and evaluate a new incision technique: the papilla base incision. METHODOLOGY: Twenty healthy patients referred for surgical treatment of persisting apical periodontitis, who were free of periodontal disease and had intact interdental papillae were included in the study. The preoperative papilla height was recorded by measuring the distance between the contact point and the most coronal point of the papilla. The papilla base flap, consisting of the papilla base incision and two releasing incisions, was used to expose the bone. The papilla

Submacular cysticercosis.

Ocular cysticercosis could involve subconjunctival space, anterior chamber, extraocular muscle, subretinal space, or vitreous. The presence of intraocular live cyst is a potential threat to visual acuity. The removal of the cyst in-toto is thus of importance to prevent inflammatory reaction and ocular damage. The presence of cysticercosis underneath the macula makes the management challenging. Herein, we describe the management of a submacular live cysticercus cyst with a good postoperative gain in visual acuity. Also, the swept-source optical coherence tomography changes are described.

Cysticercosis masquerading as tuberculous lymphadenitis in supraclavicular region.

Cysticercosis is a parasitic infestation caused by the larvae of the tapeworm Taenia solium. In humans, cysticercosis spreads through fecal-oral route by ingesting food contaminated with eggs of pork tapeworm. The most frequent sites affected are central nervous system, eye, subcutaneous tissue, and skeletal muscle. We report a case of cysticercosis presenting as left supraclavicular swelling which is a rare site, diagnosed on fine-needle aspiration.

A rare case of giant subretinal migration of cysticercosis cyst with extensive epiretinal membrane and subretinal fibrosis.

Cysticercosis is caused by cysticercus cellulosae, the larval form of pork tapeworm. In intraocular cysticercosis the cyst enters the subretinal space via the choroid and then gains entry into the vitreous cavity by piercing the retina. It is well established that the cyst can incite extensive intraocular inflammation. Other complications such as epiretinal membrane and cataract have been reported in the literature. Thus far, epiretinal membrane in intraocular cysticercosis has been reported at the site of entry of the cyst into the vitreous cavity. The data on the extent of epiretinal membran

An Unusual case of neurocysticercosis leading to blindness in a young Indian male.

Neurocysticercosis is an endemic disease in India. It is caused by infection from the larval form of Taenia solium and humans serve as the intermediate host. Its diverse manifestations include seizures, headaches, focal neurological signs. Obstructive hydrocephalus, with its potential for death is the most disastrous complication. We hereby report a case of 24 year old boy presenting with blindness without hydrocephalus.

Disseminated neurocysticercosis with bilateral papilledema: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ocular cysticercosis is a disease which rarely involves cutaneous skin and the optic nerve. Patients with clinical presentation of subcutaneous nodules and papilledema should always be evaluated for cysticercosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of ocular cysticercosis with multiple disseminated subcutaneous nodules and papilledema in both eyes. A 22-year-old Brahmin man presented with complaints of gradual loss of vision in both eyes and multiple small masses all over his body. On clinical evaluation, multiple subcutaneous nodules were seen on his face, mandibular area,

Suprasellar Cysticercosis Cyst with Optic Nerve Compression Masquerading as an Arachnoid Cyst.

Cysticercosis is a parasitic infection caused by the larvae of the cestode Taenia solium. Ocular parasitosis in humans is well recognized; however, cysticercosis of the optic nerve is rare. Here, we report a case of an adult male who presented with right-sided headache and a gradual loss of vision in the right eye. Optical coherence tomography indicated severe loss of ganglion cells in the right eye. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a predominantly suprasellar cystic lesion thought to represent an arachnoid cyst. We performed a craniotomy to excise the cyst. Histopathological examination of t
