Dietary self-monitoring versus ecological momentary assessment in measuring and characterizing dietary lapses.

Dietary lapses in behavioral weight loss (BWL) programs, i.e., non-adherence to the dietary prescription, impede weight loss. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA; brief, repeated surveys) has many strengths in measuring lapses, but may underestimate lapse frequency and does not easily capture lapses' nutritional make-up. Dietary self-monitoring may offer benefits over EMA in measuring lapses, though this remains unstudied. We hypothesized EMA would underestimate lapses relative to dietary self-monitoring, and dietary self-monitoring would reveal lapses were associated with higher calories, hi

Neurofeedback intervention based on functional near-infrared spectroscopy compared with sham control to improve inhibitory cognitive control in patients with severe obesity and food addiction: The protocol of a monocentric prospective randomized parallel-group single-blind interventional study.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Overconsumption of hyperpalatable foods and obesity are associated with reduced activity of brain regions involved in executive functions, including the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC). Neurofeedback (NF) based on functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) appears as an easily feasible neuromodulation method to assist voluntary improvement of inhibitory cognitive control. This study is primarily designed to assess the efficacy of fNIRS-based NF training targeting the dlPFC for strengthening inhibitory control in patients with food addiction (FA) and obesity. METHO

Effects of Hearing Aids in a Simulated Open-Plan Office: A Laboratory Study Involving Normal-Hearing Participants and Simulated Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVE: Over the past decade, the prevalence of hearing aid users in open-plan offices has risen significantly. This study investigates the potential effects of wearing hearing aids on cognitive performance and psychological state in noisy office environments. METHODS: A laboratory experiment involved 46 normal-hearing participants. Four sound conditions mixed speech with open-plan office noise at varying signal-to-noise ratios. Stimuli were recorded in a semi-anechoic room using an acoustic dummy head with and without hearing aids, and moderate hearing loss was simulated. Participants per

Food reinforcement as a predictor of child dietary intake during a test meal.

Food motivation, herein referred to as the relative reinforcing value of food (RRVFood), refers to how hard an individual will work for a food. RRVFood has been linked to the development and maintenance of overweight/obesity (OW/OB). However, there is little known on the relationships between RRVFood, dietary intake, and weight status within children. The current study aims to assess these relationships in children ages 8-11 who are at risk for OW/OB. Exploratory sex-based differences will also be assessed. Data presented are from the first two sessions of a 7-session longitudinal study. One s

Smartphone apps for obesity management: A systematic review using self-determination theory.

BACKGROUND: While bariatric surgery and pharmacotherapy are effective treatments for obesity, ongoing supportive care remains a challenge. Smartphone applications (apps) may assist with symptom management, but their effectiveness and practical use in obesity treatment is unclear. This review evaluated the effectiveness, acceptability, and feasibility of these apps in supporting individuals following obesity treatment. To better understand how these apps may promote sustained engagement and behaviour change, their design was analysed using Self-Determination Theory (SDT). METHODS: A systematic

Improving Opportunities for Patients to Raise Concerns During Ward Rounds: A Quality Improvement Project.

Introduction Martha's Rule was introduced following the death of 13-year-old Martha Mills, whose signs of sepsis were overlooked despite concerns raised by her parents. It can often be difficult to voice concerns in a busy clinical setting, but one key opportunity for them to be addressed is the daily ward round. Aims This study aimed to increase the proportion of patients and relatives asked about concerns, to increase the proportion of concerns addressed by doctors, and to identify discrete types of concerns raised. Methods We observed 15 ward rounds between October 2024 and February 2025 an

Comparative effectiveness and safety of pharmacological treatments for rapid tranquilisation in emergency settings: a systematic review and individual participant data network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Several medications are available for rapid tranquilisation in psychomotor agitation, but choosing among them varies across local practices and this variation is compounded by inconsistent guidelines. We performed a systematic review with individual participant data network meta-analysis to inform evidence-based recommendations. METHODS: In this systematic review and individual participant data meta-analysis, we searched multiple databases from database inception to Nov 14, 2025, for randomised trials comparing intramuscular or intravenous treatments for rapid tranquilisation (pri

The locus coeruleus modulates acute itch via ERK-dependent neuronal excitability.

The locus coeruleus (LC), as the primary noradrenergic nucleus in the brain, plays a pivotal role in sensory modulation and stress responses. However, its specific involvement in acute itch remains incompletely understood. In this study, we established acute itch models by intradermal injection of Compound 48/80 (C48/80) and chloroquine (CQ) into the neck region of mice. Both stimuli significantly increased c-Fos expression in the bilateral LC. Electrophysiological recordings from LC neurons in C48/80- or CQ-treated mice revealed enhanced excitability under ramp stimulation, manifesting as inc

Neuroplacental Interactions in early human development: Insights from selective acute neuronal necrosis.

INTRODUCTION: The correct development of the central nervous system depends largely on the last two trimesters of gestation and the early neonatal period. Neurological lesions are common in autopsies, being one of the most relevant, selective acute neuronal necrosis, a manifestation of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. This study aimed to analyse the distribution of selective acute neuronal necrosis (SANN) and its association with placental lesions, clinical factors and other central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities. METHODS: From 1090 autopsies performed, 205 cases (18.8 %) with SANN were i

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Regarding Breast Cancer and Its Prevention Among Female Doctors at a Tertiary Care Hospital in Pakistan.

Background and objectives Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality among women, yet screening remains underutilized in low-resource settings. Despite the central role of physicians in patient counselling, early detection, and guideline implementation, most research in Pakistan about breast cancer awareness has focused on nurses, medical students, or the general population. Evidence specifically examining female doctors, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, remains sparse. This study assessed breast cancer knowledge, attitudes, and screening practices among female doctors

Unravelling the mystery of hypoxia-induced miRNAs in breast cancer: A molecular cross-talk driving tumour progression and therapy resistance.

Breast cancer (BC) is estimated to be around 2.3 million new cases and 670 000 deaths in 2020 resulting it into the most frequent cancer globally and ranks fifth among mortalities. Numerous studies have established the link between BC and microRNAs (miRNAs), which are endogenous non-protein-coding master regulators that modulate genetic expressions and influences many physiological and pathological cellular processes. In addition, hypoxia, which also consequently leads to cancer, is a pivotal driver of biological behaviour and malignant traits of cancer cells and eventually tumour cell surviva

Triggers of highly lethal seizures induced by novel stimulants: A systematic review focused on synthetic cathinones and phenethylamines.

Synthetic cathinones and phenethylamines are increasingly prevalent novel psychoactive substances with stimulant and hallucinogenic properties. They are associated with acute symptomatic seizures, often with lethal outcomes. Current management is usually limited to symptomatic therapy, as serotonin and sympathomimetic toxidromes are widely regarded as the main seizure-inducing mechanisms. However, intoxications frequently involve severe organ toxicities or metabolic disturbances with high epileptogenic potential, which may be preventable or treatable. This review aimed to assess seizure mechan

The relation between sleep and affect in youth during remission from anxiety and depression.

OBJECTIVE: In youth remitted from anxiety and depressive disorders, lower daytime positive (PA) or higher negative affect (NA) and suboptimal sleep could reinforce one another in bidirectional vicious feedback loops. The strength of these loops may contribute to increase of anxiety or depressive symptoms four months later. METHOD: Remitted 13-to-21-year-olds engaged in a two-week app-based daily diary with affect items, wearing a wrist-worn accelerometer assessing sleep, and completed anxiety (RCADS), depression (BDI) and sleep (SRSQ) questionnaires at baseline and four-month follow-up. PM289, a synthetic CB2 in vitro receptor agonist, modulates morphine-induced antinociceptive effect and withdrawal syndrome in an animal model of osteoarthritic pain.

Osteoarthritis is a common condition, and the associated pain is a leading cause of disability. One main challenge in its management stems from the complexity of the disease and the limited efficacy of current analgesic treatments. Although evidence-based clinical guidelines provide valuable recommendations, they often prove inadequate. Opioids, while effective, are not considered first-line therapies due to adverse effects, particularly with long-term use. A promising strategy for chronic pain involves the coadministration of opioid and cannabinoid receptor agonists. This study investigates t
