Parents recounting their journey with stuttering: A preliminary exploration of experiences and adaptation.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Parents' attitudes and emotions toward stuttering have the potential to impact their reactions to their child's speech. Many parents lack sufficient knowledge about stuttering, which often leads to guilt, uncertainty, and helplessness when their child begins to stutter. However, these experiences may evolve later. This study aimed to explore parents' experiences, as well as their reflections on how these experiences have changed since the onset. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 5 parents of individuals who stutter, and 9 other parents chose to complet

Modeling Gulf War Illness: anxiety, memory deficits, cholinergic and potassium channel imbalance in male and female mice.

Gulf War Illness (GWI) is a complex, multisystem condition that remains difficult to diagnose, with an etiology thought to involve interactions between stress and exposure to acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors of varying potency. Although rodent models using GWI-related neurotoxicants have been developed, many do not fully replicate war-theater conditions, particularly the inclusion of sarin exposure. We modeled a GW-like exposure in male and female C57BL/6J mice using pyridostigmine bromide (PB), permethrin (PER), N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET), moderate stress, and Diisopropylfluoroph

Large language modeling of hallucinatory problem mitigation based on the wheel of emotions.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable generative capabilities across a wide range of natural language processing tasks. However, the frequent occurrence of hallucinations-outputs that appear plausible but are factually incorrect or logically inconsistent-poses a significant challenge to the reliability and practical utility of these models. This paper proposes a novel Emotion-Augmented Inference (EAI) method based on the Wheel of Emotions, aiming to mitigate hallucinations in multimodal generation tasks involving LLMs. EAI integrates two core mechanisms: visual-contrastive

"This is really going to help our wonderful mothers": A qualitative analysis of midwife perspectives on implementing a triage phone line to support home blood pressure monitoring in Ghana.

PROBLEM: Preeclampsia and eclampsia are a significant cause of maternal morbidity and mortality in low-resource settings. BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of preeclampsia is based on the new development of elevated blood pressures after 20 weeks of gestation, with or without proteinuria, or with signs or symptoms of end-organ involvement (ACOG Practice Bulletin 222, 2020/2023). Home BP monitoring is an important strategy to detect elevated BPs for early intervention and management. AIM: To explore midwives' perspectives on implementation of a midwife-led triage phone line to support home BP monitoring

Is exergaming a viable exercise option for obese black women?

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity and obesity, which are disproportionately higher in Black women, are known risk factors of breast cancer. Novel methods to address this public health concern involve leveraging screen-viewing activities to reduce sedentary behavior and increase energy expenditure levels. Exergaming has demonstrated efficacy in increasing physical activity levels, yet no studies have examined exergaming in overweight/obese Black women. The primary objective of this study was to examine the effect of exergaming on anthropometric markers among overweight/obese Black women. METHODS

From Spinal Meningioma to Compressive Hematoma: A Case of Spontaneous Spinal Hematoma Mimicking Meningioma in a Pregnant Woman.

Spontaneous spinal hematomas are rare but potentially life-threatening, particularly during pregnancy, where they can mimic other spinal lesions, complicating diagnosis and management. We report a case of a 26-year-old pregnant woman at 23 weeks of gestation, who presented with sudden-onset paraparesis. Neurological examination revealed signs of spinal cord compression, and MRI suggested a spinal meningioma due to an extramedullary tissue process at the D3-D4 level. Despite a normal coagulation profile, emergency laminectomy (D2-D6) was performed, revealing and evacuating a spontaneous spinal

A Systematic Review of the Use of Janus Kinase Inhibitors in Large Vessel Vasculitis.

Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKi) are emerging agents in the treatment of rheumatological diseases. Their role in rheumatoid arthritis and spondyloarthropathies has been established. The treatment of Takayasu Arteritis (TAK) and Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA) is large vessel vasculitis requiring long courses of glucocorticoids, often combined with other immunosuppressants. It has been shown that the pathogenesis of TAK and GCA involves the JAK-signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) pathway, showing that JAKi can theoretically be efficacious in these conditions. A systematic review of

D-Dimer: An Early Marker of Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation in Preeclampsia and Eclampsia.

Introduction Preeclampsia, a disease of unknown etiology, affects multiple organ systems and carries a grave prognosis for both the mother and fetus. Any hypertension and proteinuria developing after 20 weeks of gestation in a previously normal patient warrants investigation for this disease. Coagulation studies may be deranged in preeclampsia and eclampsia due to their association with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). In DIC, the underlying basic pathology is endothelial dysfunction and intense vasospasm; it can affect any organ but most commonly affects the brain, kidneys, uteru

Repeated net-tDCS of the hypothalamus appetite-control network enhances inhibitory control and decreases sweet food intake in persons with overweight or obesity.

BACKGROUND: Reduced inhibitory control is associated with obesity and neuroimaging studies indicate that diminished prefrontal cortex activity influence eating behavior and metabolism. The hypothalamus regulates energy homeostasis and is functionally connected to cortical and subcortical regions especially the frontal areas. OBJECTIVES: We tested network-targeted transcranial direct current stimulation (net-tDCS) to influence the excitability of brain regions involved in appetite control. METHODS: In a randomized, double-blind parallel group design, 44 adults with overweight or obesity (BMI

A Review of FDG-PET in Progressive Supranuclear Palsy and Corticobasal Syndrome.

Although diagnostic criteria and research are constantly advancing, distinguishing between progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and corticobasal syndrome (CBS) remains a significant challenge. This difficulty stems from their similar clinical symptoms and the lack of reliable biomarkers. In this work, we present a detailed review of fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography (PET), exploring its potential role in differentiating PSP and CBS, drawing on their established utility in other neurodegenerative diseases. We searched the PubMed database from its inception for original resea

Intermittent transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation reverses acute stress-induced memory deficits via O-GlcNAc modulation.

In recent years, transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS), as a non-invasive therapy, has been increasingly employed to ameliorate cognitive deficits. O-linked β-N-acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAc) modification plays a crucial role in neuronal function and is closely related to stress responses and memory regulation. However, the impact of taVNS on O-GlcNAc modification and memory function under acute stress conditions remains unclear. This study aims to explore the effects of taVNS on memory impairment in acutely stressed mice and elucidate the potential mechanisms involving O-GlcN
