Working memory has been proposed as an important component of reading and arithmetic skills. The development of working memory was studied in normally achieving and subtypes of learning disabled children. The performance of reading disabled (RD), arithmetic disabled (ARITHD), and attentional deficit disordered (ADD) children, age 7-13, was compared to normal achievers (NA) on 2 working memory tasks, 1 involving sentences and the other involving counting. There was a significant growth of working memory as a function of age. In addition, the RD children had significantly lower scores on both ta

Position-specific errors in word reading are usually associated with neglect or visual extinction on the same side as the reading problem. In this study, two patients with left-hemisphere lesions showed visual extinction on the right but reading difficulty on the left side of words and pseudowords. Further study of one patient revealed that he also had problems reading the beginning of words presented tachistoscopically or in vertical orientation. In addition, the positional difficulty was apparent when he named the letters in words. The pattern of results indicates that the positional dyslexi

College students diagnosed as learning disabled were studied to determine whether they would make more progress in a summer program if taught by an adaptation of the Orton-Gillingham (O-G) approach. Progress of those exposed to this approach was compared to progress of those exposed to (a) a nonphonetic approach or (b) no educational activity. Pre- and posttest results are reported for the Wide Range Achievement Test-Revised and Woodcock Reading Mastery Tests. The subjects were 30 college students aged 17 to 24, who were diagnosed as LD. They were divided into groups of 10 and exposed to the i

The current study supports Levinson's contention (1988) that the diagnosis of dyslexia cannot be based solely on neurophysiological evidence but must be made in conjunction with reading and educational test scores. Contrary to much current research, in the present study specific WISC-R profiles are identified within a stringently defined subgroup of 57 9- to 12-yr-old dyslexic children. Well-defined subtest scatter can differentiate dyslexics from proficient readers. In particular, the Digit Span subtest, which is not routinely administered by psychologists or included in computing Verbal IQ,

Grosser and Spafford (in this journal, 1989) have advanced an hypothesis and presented measurements which they believe support the idea of an excess of cones in the peripheral retinae of dyslexics. This note points out that their hypothesis is based on the erroneous assumption that normals have no peripheral cones. Further, their data can be explained by at least two alternative, though uninteresting, methodological hypotheses, that uncontrolled eye movements or experimenter suggestion (or both) could have produced their results. Finally, the requisite methods for assessing color vision, and t

We report a case of a 35-year-old teacher, Louise, with a history of learning difficulties and current evidence of developmental phonological dyslexia and dysgraphia. Her reading, spelling, and remembering of novel stimuli written in conventional alphabetic script was poor, but she performed significantly better when the same items were written in the International Phonetic Alphabet, a system that she learned when studying linguistics. Her impaired performance in tasks of phonemic segmentation and short-term memory, which are generally associated with impaired reading and spelling of unfamilia

Brain EEG mapping has been recorded during three different conditions, rest closed eyes, rest open eyes, and reading task, in a group of 22 dyslexic children, age mean 9.3 years, range 8-11, and control group of normal readers of the same age. All the subjects were right-handed, and laterality was assessed through the Edinburgh test. The individual maps in dyslexic and controls were averaged, and mean maps of both groups were obtained for a very different experimental condition. Rest closed eyes maps of dyslexics and controls disclose a powerful and symmetric alpha over occipital areas, with h

A case of Pseudologia Fantastica is presented in a man charged with murder. Psychological assessment revealed him to be highly compliant and suggestible, consistent with early research (Healy and Healy, 1915) which showed pathological liars to be suggestible to misleading information. A specific dyslexic disorder is also demonstrated, and the possible mechanisms behind the man's lying considered. Some implications regarding the reliability of the man's varying confessions to the police are discussed, and parallels are drawn between this case and that of Timothy Evans, who in 1950 was hanged fo

We report here a case of multiple sclerosis (MS) showing pure alexia. The patient was a 28 year-old, right-handed male student of medicine. He had been healthy prior to college, but when he tried to read the newspaper one morning in January of 1983, he suddenly became aware that he could not. He could speak fluently and had no disturbances of auditory comprehension. No signs of abnormality were noted in his writing ability. Thereafter, the patient occasionally experienced difficulty in reading, together with right homonymous hemianopsia. These symptoms, however, usually vanished following slee

Dyslexia is a developmental disorder characterized by a reduced ability to recognize or comprehend written or printed words. Two clinically diagnosed dyslexics and two normals served as subjects. Both dyslexic subjects showed reduced static accommodative and vergence ranges compared with normals and numerous regressions and fixation pauses during reading and target tracking tasks. The subjects were then presented with convergent and divergent ramp disparity stimuli ranging in speed from 1.33 to 32.0 deg/s and steps of either 2 or 4 degrees amplitude. The dyslexic subjects showed reduced vergen

The purpose of this article was to examine the logic and the empirical data supporting the proposition that intelligence tests are not necessary for the definition of a learning disability. Four assumptions of the use of IQ test scores in the definition of learning disabilities were examined. These assumptions were (a) IQ tests measure intelligence; (b) intelligence and achievement are independent, and the presence of a learning disability will not affect IQ scores; (c) IQ scores predict reading, and children with low IQ scores should be poor readers; and (d) reading disabled children with dif

It would appear the question of relevance of IQ in the assessment and remediation of children with RD is not quite the relevant question to ask, if only traditional intelligence tests are the focus. From the psychoeducational point of view of refining diagnosis, and from the administrative perspective of accountability, it would be helpful to accept a threshold of something like an IQ of 85 as the lower bound in defining learning or reading disabilities. A discrepancy from this threshold as derived from regression analysis or other more refined analyses and taking into account varying reliabil
