INTRODUCTION: Anosognosia, defined as reduced awareness of one's deficit or symptom, is common in Huntington's disease (HD) and detectable at each disease stage. The impact of anosognosia on self-reporting in HD populations is critical to understand given growing use of patient-reported outcomes in HD clinical care and research. We aimed to determine the influence of anosognosia on patient-reported outcome measures assessing psychiatric symptoms and quality of life in HD.
METHODS: We enrolled HD patients to complete a battery of patient-reported and rater-administered measures, including the

BACKGROUND: Anosognosia, or unawareness of symptoms, is common in Huntington's disease (HD), but the neuroanatomical basis of this is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To identify neuroanatomical correlates of HD anosognosia using structural MRI data.
METHODS: We leveraged a pre-processed dataset of 570 HD participants across the well-characterized PREDICT-HD and TRACK-HD cohort studies. Anosognosia index was operationalized as the score discrepancies between HD participants and their caregivers on the Frontal Systems Behavior Scale (FrSBe).
RESULTS: Univariate correlation analyses identified volumes of

Topographical disorientation is linked to lesions in the right hemisphere and typically resolves within a few months post-stroke. Persistent topographical disorientation is uncommon and frequently accompanied by impairments in visual memory, complicating the analysis of the underlying mechanisms. Herein, we report two cases of sustained pure topographical disorientation following cerebral hemorrhages in the left retrosplenial region. The patients exhibited disorientation in both familiar and unfamiliar settings, attributable to heading disorientation, a deficit in determining the directional r

BACKGROUND: There are two types of central auditory disorders due to pathology of the bilateral auditory cortices in adult patients: auditory agnosia with residual hearing; cortical deafness with total hearing loss. However, long-term changes of hearing acuity over physical development time are unknown.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this case report was to illustrate the pathophysiology of auditory changes in a 1 year-3 months old child who was diagnosed with auditory agnosia as a sequel of herpes encephalitis and later developed cortical deafness during a 36-year follow-up.

The neuropsychological assessment of non-demented subjects with gene mutation of familial Alzheimer's disease (AD) provides a model for exploring the early cognitive features of the disease. We evaluated 1 patient and 6 non-demented subjects belonging to a family with AD with M239V mutation of the presenilin 2 gene, aiming to verify the contribution of specific cognitive patterns to the characterization of familial AD. One patient, 3 non-demented subjects with M239V mutation and 3 subjects without mutation from the same family underwent neuropsychological testing. The patient's cognitive profi

Following prolonged neglect during the formative decades of behavioural neurology, the temporopolar region has become a site of vibrant research on the neurobiology of cognition and conduct. This turnaround can be attributed to increasing recognition of neurodegenerative diseases that target temporopolar regions for peak destruction. The resultant syndromes include behavioural dementia, associative agnosia, semantic forms of primary progressive aphasia and semantic dementia. Clinicopathological correlations show that object naming and word comprehension are critically dependent on the language

BACKGROUND: Hemispatial neglect is a disabling cognitive disorder following stroke and effective therapies are required.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of combined optokinetic stimulation (OKS) and cueing-assisted reading therapy (READ) on the remission of hemispatial neglect following stroke.
METHODS: Randomized, controlled, two-period, crossover trial conducted at a German neurorehabilitation center. Twenty participants with left neglect following right hemispheric stroke (mean age 66 years (SD 11), mean time since stroke 50 days (SD 33)) finished the trial (12 received OKSREAD first,

In some patients with unilateral spatial neglect, symptoms reflect impaired lateralized spatial attention and representation (perceptual bias) whereas in others the inability to respond to stimuli located in contralesional space (response bias). Here, we investigated whether prismatic adaptation (PA) and visual scanning training (VST) differentially affect perceptual and response bias and whether rehabilitation outcome depends on the type of bias underlying symptoms. Two groups of neglect patients in the subacute phase were evaluated before, immediately after, and two weeks following 10 days o

A 66-year-old left-handed male was admitted to our acute inpatient rehabilitation (AIR) unit following a resection of the right occipito-parietal glioblastoma. He presented with symptoms of horizontal oculomotor apraxia, contralateral optic ataxia and left homonymous hemianopsia. We diagnosed this patient with partial Bálint's syndrome (BS)- oculomotor apraxia, optic ataxia but not simultanagnosia. BS is typically caused by bilateral posterior parietal lesions, but we here describe a unique case due toresection of a right intracranial tumor. A short AIR stay allowed our patient to learn how to

INTRODUCTION: Posterior Cortical Atrophy (PCA) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by impairment of higher-order visual processing in the setting of progressive atrophy of the parietal and occipital lobes. The underlying pathology is variable but most commonly Alzheimer's disease. The majority of individuals develop symptoms before 65 years of age; however, delayed diagnosis is common due to misattribution of symptoms to ocular rather than cortical pathology.
AREAS COVERED: The purpose of this review is to provide readers with an in-depth analysis of Posterior Cortical Atrophy syndr

OBJECTIVE: Apraxia is the inability to perform voluntary, skilled movements following brain lesions, in the absence of sensory integration deficits. Yet, patients with neurodegenerative diseases (ND) may have sensory integration deficits, so we tested the associations and dissociations between apraxia and sensory integration.
METHODS: A total of 44 patients with ND and 20 healthy controls underwent extensive testing of sensory integration (i.e., localization of tactile, visual, and proprioceptive stimuli; agraphesthesia; astereognosis) and apraxia (i.e., finger dexterity, imitation, tool use)

BACKGROUND: A neurocognitive phenotype of post-COVID-19 infection has recently been described that is characterized by a lack of awareness of memory impairment (i.e., anosognosia), altered functional connectivity in the brain's default mode and limbic networks, and an elevated monocyte count. However, the relationship between these cognitive and brain functional connectivity alterations in the chronic phase with the level of cytokines during the acute phase has yet to be identified.
AIM: Determine whether acute cytokine type and levels is associated with anosognosia and functional patterns of

Impaired awareness increases dependency of patients suffering from Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and caregivers' burden but remains insufficiently evaluated in clinical practice. The numerous conceptualisations of this symptomatology (anosognosia, denial, insight…) have only a slight impact on the three main assessment methodologies which are: the patient-caregiver discrepancy; the clinician rating of patients' awareness of illness; and the prediction of performance discrepancy methods. Nevertheless, most of evaluating tools are not validated yet, in particular regarding the clinician rating, leadi

Despite 25 years of research on the topic, there is still no consensus on whether prism adaptation is an effective therapy for visuospatial neglect. We have addressed this question through a meta-analysis of the most well-controlled studies on the topic. Our main meta-analytic model included studies with a placebo/sham/treatment-as-usual control group from which data from right hemisphere stroke patients and left-sided neglect could be aggregated. The short-term treatment effects on the two commonly used standard tests for neglect, the conventional Behavioural Inattention Test (BIT-C) and canc
