Individuals with primary progressive apraxia of speech (PPAOS) often develop parkinsonism and dysphagia. To evaluate the clinical correlates and impact of dysphagia in this population, we compared enrollment visit data between individuals with (n = 12) versus individuals without (n = 44) dysphagia symptoms. The group with dysphagia had more motor speech symptoms and parkinsonism. Longitudinal analysis revealed that almost everyone developed dysphagia before dying; the average time to death after developing dysphagia was 5.43 years and complications of dysphagia resulted in mortality for 35% of

There are varied reports about the extent to which people with apraxia of speech (AOS) simplify the phonemic complexity of utterances they attempt to produce and whether the degree to which they do so might inform differential diagnosis relative to aphasia with phonemic paraphasia (APP). Our study purpose was to determine whether either or both diagnostic groups simplify the phonemic content for words they repeat during a typical motor speech evaluation. 195 people with aphasia after stroke were assigned to four diagnostic groups based on quantitative metrics of core speech criteria for AOS an

Researches on motor skills in intellectually gifted children (IGC) are Insufficient to establish a clear profile of their motor functioning and understanding their potential needs. This study aimed to characterize motor skills in 30 IGC (Intelligence Quotient ≥130) compared with 35 typically developing children (TDC) with an intelligence level in the average range, aged from 6 to 16 years. A thorough theory-driven exploratory examination of motor skills was carried out to explore distinct components described in the cognitive models of apraxia. Results of IGC were compared with those of TDC fo

PURPOSE: The Apraxia of Speech Rating Scale (ASRS; Strand et al., 2014) has quickly emerged as a standard for apraxia of speech (AOS) diagnosis in stroke despite mixed evidence. The purpose of this study was to analyze, clarify, and revise the scoring procedures and item definitions of the ASRS as a preliminary step for investigating the scale's psychometric properties in stroke.
METHOD: We evaluated the interpretation of the ASRS items and scale procedures by independently rating the video and audio examples provided with the latest dissemination of the ASRS. Discrepancies in ratings were di

Nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) eliminates transcripts containing premature termination codons, thereby preventing errors in protein synthesis. Serine/threonine-protein kinase SMG1 is a crucial kinase for NMD response, interacting with other regulatory proteins such as SMG8 and SMG9. We identified a de novo heterozygous variant in SMG1 p.Gln2398Glu (c.7192C>G) in a patient with global developmental delay, facial dysmorphism, and oculomotor apraxia. Thus, stem cell models with SMG1 mutations using gene editing technology were established to address the functional consequences of this mutatio

OBJECTIVE: It has been hypothesized that propranolol and enalapril can provide cardiovascular stability without any negative impact on neurologic recovery after severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Although propranolol and enalapril have been proposed to have beneficial effects as cardiovascular stabilizers in TBI, many neurologic effects remain obscure. We hypothesized which of the following drugs could improve The Glasgow Outcome Scale-extended (GOS-E) in severe TBI patients.
METHODS: This single-blinded randomized, clinical trial was conducted in 2 university hospitals from 2020 to 2021. A

BACKGROUND: The motor-cognitive syndrome apraxia is a common stroke sequela and severely affects the outcome after stroke by impairing activities of daily living. Notably, like in many health conditions, there is a massive backlog regarding studies on sex differences in patients with apraxia despite common knowledge that sex influences praxis performance in healthy participants. We investigated putative sex differences in apraxic stroke patients at the behavioral and neural levels.
METHODS: We retrospectively analysed the data of a cohort of 102 left-hemisphere stroke patients in the (sub)acu

BACKGROUND: Genetic ataxias are clinically heterogenous neurodegenerative conditions often involving rare or private mutations and it is often difficult to assign pathogenicity to rare gene variants solely based on DNA sequencing. An effective functional assay from an easy-to-obtain biospecimen would aid this assessment and be of high clinical value. SETX encodes a ubiquitous DNA/RNA helicase crucial for resolving R-loops and maintaining genome stability. Loss-of-function mutations cause a recessive disorder, Ataxia with Oculomotor Apraxia Type 2 (AOA2).
METHODS: Here we utilize Weighted Gene

PURPOSE: The diagnosis and treatment of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) remains a clinical challenge for many speech-language pathologists (SLPs). Given this, it is imperative to understand how SLPs learn about CAS during graduate school and throughout their careers.
METHOD: In the current study, American Speech-Language-Hearing Association-certified SLPs who practice in the United States and work with young children completed a 32-item online survey. Survey items aimed to understand SLPs' experiences learning about CAS during graduate school and through continuing education (CE). Responden

Apraxia is a neuropsychological disorder that impairs voluntary, purposeful movements, with "Gait apraxia" specifically affecting walking. Because of the lack of standardized diagnostic tools, in Italian, we translated and adapted the "Assessment of Walking Skills" (AWS) scale, originally developed for identifying gait apraxia in Alzheimer's patients. The AWS includes 42 items that evaluate trunk and leg movements, useful for comparing the performance between patients and healthy controls. This translation and adaptation represent a critical step toward standardizing the AWS scale for the Ital

INTRODUCTION: This case report highlights one of the less common variants of major neurocognitive disorder because of Alzheimer's disease, posterior cortical atrophy. There is a paucity of data about this condition in sub-Saharan Africa.
PATIENT PRESENTATION: A 54-year-old female presented to the geriatric clinic following a 2-year history of poor memory and inability to fulfil her work obligations. The most prominent symptom was visual disturbance, with a normal ophthalmic examination.
MANAGEMENT AND OUTCOME: Workup done to reveal reversible causes of dementia did not yield any positive res

IMPORTANCE: Poststroke, patients often experience decreased role participation, partially because of cognitive impairment. However, the potential relationship between upper limb apraxia (ULA), a cognitive dysfunction, and role participation remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether ULA is related to role participation among patients with mild to moderate stroke.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
SETTING: Randomly selected Spanish public primary care centers.
PARTICIPANTS: One hundred fifty-three patients with mild to moderate poststroke.
OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Role participation was as

PURPOSE: There are limited clinical pathways on the management of communication impairment in people with primary brain tumour. This scoping review aimed to collate the evidence on management of communication impairment for people with primary brain tumours and determine if there is sufficient evidence to develop a clinical pathway.
METHOD: A systematic search strategy (September 2023) used Medline, CINAHL, PsychInfo, and The Cochrane Library. Eligibility criteria required the publication to be primary evidence, any study design, published in a peer reviewed journal in English, and investigat

PURPOSE: This clinical focus article aimed to explore how motor speech disorders (MSDs) manifest in children with acquired brain injury (ABI) and determine if an adult diagnostic system, such as the Mayo Clinic System, applies to pediatric cases.
METHOD: Four children with ABI with differing loci of impairment were evaluated to compare perceptual speech features and how they align or diverge from expected adult profiles with similar loci of impairment. Two expert speech-language pathologists identified perceptual speech features from the recorded motor speech evaluations and determined motor

BACKGROUND: Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a complex motor speech disorder that requires careful differential diagnosis, particularly in languages where validated diagnostic tools are lacking. The Dynamic Evaluation of Motor Speech Skill (DEMSS) is a widely used tool for identifying CAS, but a Turkish version had not yet been developed.
AIMS: This study aimed to adapt DEMSS into Turkish (DEMSS-TR) and evaluate its psychometric properties for use with Turkish-speaking children with speech sound disorders (SSD).
METHODS: Eighty-two monolingual Turkish-speaking children aged 3;0 to 6;11 w

Limb apraxia is a cognitive-motor disorder typically resulting from left hemisphere stroke, characterized by an inability to perform skilled limb movements despite intact motor and sensory functions. Previous studies suggest that individuals with apraxia exhibit deficits in sensorimotor integration, particularly in detecting temporal discrepancies between movement and sensory feedback. However, whether these deficits affect explicit sense of agency (SoA) remains unclear. This study investigated the time window for sensorimotor integration and explicit SoA in post-stroke patients with and witho
