Multimodal detection of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus: neuropsychological assessment, radiological correlates of corpus callosum morphology, and CSF outflow resistance.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate associations between the corpus callosum angle (CCA), corpus callosum splenial angle (CCSA), and resistance to CSF outflow (Rout) with neuropsychological performance in patients who had suspected idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH), and to assess their predictive value for diagnosis and postoperative cognitive outcomes following ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement. METHODS: This prospective observational study included 74 patients (39 male, mean age 73.6 years) who were evaluated for iNPH between 2019 and 2022 at a single instituti

Using, knowing, owning artifacts: What hoarding behavior and apraxia tell us about human-object relations.

Humans have developed exceptional capacities for tool use, such that everyday interactions with the physical world largely involve manufactured objects (i.e., artifacts). Although research on apraxia has elucidated the cognitive mechanisms underlying tool use, human-object relations extend beyond their functional use to include socio-emotional dimensions that remain comparatively understudied. This critical review addresses two syndromes traditionally studied in separate fields that, when considered together, provide insights into the nature of human-object relations. Apraxia is marked by impa

Augmentative and Alternative Communication Generative Language Intervention: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: Children with a wide range of impairments such as cerebral palsy and childhood apraxia of speech can benefit from augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). When AAC is provided, it frequently focuses on improving basic pragmatic skills such as requesting or on early semantic skills such as vocabulary acquisition. To address this issue, the primary goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of implementing the AAC Generative Language Intervention (AAC-GLI) program on the aided expressive grammar of preschoolers with relatively intact receptive language skills who could bene

Phenotypic Spectrum of Type 2-3 Gaucher Disease: A Case Study in the Balkan Genotype.

BACKGROUND Gaucher disease (GD) is a lysosomal storage disorder caused by mutations in the glucosylceramidase beta 1 (GBA1) gene, with a wide range of clinical manifestations. Type 2 GD, the acute neuronopathic form, is the most severe and has historically been considered a distinct clinical entity. Emerging evidence suggests a broader phenotypic spectrum, including intermediate forms that do not fully align with the diagnostic criteria for either type 2 or type 3 GD. Here, we describe an Albanian patient with an unusual intermediate type 2-3 phenotype, homozygous for the rare GBA1 complex all

Unifying Divergent Conceptions in Nonfluent/Agrammatic and Semantic Primary Progressive Aphasia.

The nonfluent/agrammatic variant of primary progressive aphasia (nfav-PPA) and primary progressive apraxia of speech (PPAOS) are neurodegenerative syndromes that raise diagnostic challenges related to several issues. First, there are two divergent conceptions, one stipulating that (i) nfav-APP and PPAOS are distinct entities, and the other (ii) that PPAOS has to be integrated into the nfav-APP spectrum. A second related issue concerns the consideration of phonological dimensions, lying at the language interface with speech, which could potentially help overcome the nfva-PPA/PPAOS controversy.

Autoimmune Limbic Encephalitis With Leucine-Rich Glioma-Inactivated 1 (LGI1) Antibodies Presenting as Rapidly Progressive Cognitive Decline and Psychiatric Symptoms: A Case Report.

Autoimmune limbic encephalitis (LE) with leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 (LGI1) antibodies is rare but treatable, often presenting as rapidly progressive cognitive decline, behavioural changes, and hyponatraemia. These features can resemble psychiatric or neurodegenerative disorders, delaying diagnosis. We report a case of a 63-year-old man with confusion, memory loss, dream enactment, hallucinations, severe hyponatraemia, and specific higher cortical features, including apraxia, anomia, and executive dysfunction. Faciobrachial dystonic seizures (FBDS), a recognised hallmark of LGI1 antibody

Posterior cortical atrophy with initial psychiatric presentation: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a rare neurodegenerative syndrome most commonly associated with atypical Alzheimer's disease. It is characterized by progressive visuospatial and visuoperceptual deficits with relative sparing of memory and language in early stages. Diagnosis is frequently delayed or missed due to clinical heterogeneity, subtle early symptoms, and limited sensitivity of routine cognitive screening tools. Psychiatric symptoms may further obscure the underlying neurological disorder. This case highlights the diagnostic challenges posed by PCA presenting in the cont

Distinct gut and oral microbiome patterns associated with dyslexia in a family-based cohort: A preliminary exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Many neurodevelopmental disorders, including dyslexia and childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), have genetic predispositions that are understood to varying degrees. However, the microbiome in individuals with dyslexia and CAS remains underexplored. The goal of this exploratory study was to determine whether fecal and saliva microbiome diversity and composition are associated with dyslexia or CAS. METHODS: To this end, we examined the fecal and saliva microbiota of individuals with dyslexia, CAS, and their neurotypical family members using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing in a family

A 4-year-old male presenting with frequent falls, clumsily rising from seated positions, but a normal creatine kinase.

A 4-year-9-month-old male presented with progressive gait instability, frequent falls, and mild impaired coordination, initially raising concern for a primary neuromuscular disorder. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) was considered because of the patient's age, sex, and motor weakness. However, serum creatine kinase was not elevated, and initial DMD molecular testing was negative. Further evaluation identified truncal ataxia, oculomotor apraxia, recurrent respiratory infections, lymphocytopenia, and markedly elevated alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). These findings guided the differential toward a diso

Objective Assessment of Ideomotor Limb Apraxia Using Markerless Computer Vision and Machine Learning: A Proposed Framework and Validation Design.

Ideomotor limb apraxia is a higher-order disorder of learned, skilled movement that cannot be adequately explained by elementary weakness, sensory loss, ataxia, extrapyramidal dysfunction, impaired comprehension, or lack of cooperation. It is common after left hemisphere stroke and occurs in several neurodegenerative diseases. Quantitative kinematic study of apraxic movement is well established in the research literature, and standardized clinical instruments such as the Test of Upper Limb Apraxia and its bedside screen have improved the reliability of the examination. What remains missing is

Ataxia-Telangiectasia and Associated Bronchiectasis: Case Report and Literature Review.

Ataxia-telangiectasia is a rare, autosomal recessive primary immunodeficiency caused by mutations in the ATM gene on chromosome 11, which encodes a serine-threonine kinase essential for the recognition and repair of DNA double-strand breaks. The disease is characterized by progressive neurological impairment, immunological dysfunction, and an increased susceptibility to recurrent infections and malignancies. Pulmonary involvement represents a major source of morbidity and frequently arises from chronic infections, aspiration, and impaired airway clearance, ultimately leading to the development

SUN11602 Accelerates Early Peripheral Nerve Regeneration in an Experimental Median Nerve Transection Model.

Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is one of the common life-altering disabilities resulting in various degrees of impairment in movement and sensation alongside apraxia and long-lasting pain. The gold standard for restoring the transected nerves is bridging the distal and proximal ends of disrupted autologous nerve using neurosurgical sutures. This approach is helpful, however nerve bridging is valid in pay of consuming healthy nerves and scarring phenomena in damaged site besides difficult donor nerve accessibility and extra surgery is required. Many studies have demonstrated that bFGF plays a pi
