Enhancing Acoustic Voice Quality Through Real-Time Auditory Feedback Modulation.

Auditory feedback modulation (AFM)-altering how speakers hear their own voice during phonation-is a well-established method for investigating vocal motor control. Healthy speakers typically respond to AFM with compensatory vocal adjustments in the opposite direction of the perturbation, such as lowering pitch in response to upward pitch shifts. However, whether degradations in voice quality within auditory feedback elicit comparable compensatory behavior-specifically, vocal adjustments that enhance acoustic voice quality-remains unknown. To address this gap, the present study pursued two aims:

The Regenerative Effects of Intracordal Injection of Basic Fibroblast Growth Factor for Vocal Fold Scar After Burn or Radiotherapy: A Preliminary Report.

OBJECTIVE: Vocal fold scar secondary to burn or radiotherapy is an intractable condition characterized by severe dysphonia. These scars are highly resistant to conventional treatments due to extensive cellular depletion and fibrosis. This study presents the preliminary results of intracordal basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) injection as a regenerative therapy for this challenging pathology. METHODS: Six patients with severe vocal fold scar (one from burn and five from radiotherapy for head and neck cancer) were treated. Under topical anesthesia, 10 µg of bFGF was repeatedly injected into

The omohyoid muscle in anterior cervical approaches: Forgotten anatomy with surgical and functional implications.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The omohyoid muscle is frequently encountered during anterior cervical spine surgery, particularly at the C5-C7 levels, yet it has received limited emphasis in spinal literature. Its superior belly often crosses the operative corridor, leading surgeons to choose between preservation, retraction, or sectioning. This narrative review synthesizes anatomical and clinical evidence regarding omohyoid variability, surgical handling, and postoperative outcomes in anterior cervical discectomy and fusion procedures. Anatomical studies reveal substantial muscle variation, including accessory slips and ab

Voice Therapy for Puberphonia in the Adolescent Male: A Clinical Case Study.

CLINICAL SCENARIO: Puberphonia (also known as mutational falsetto) occurs when an individual maintains prepubescent speaking fundamental frequency (F0) after the laryngeal changes associated with puberty have taken place. Voice therapy with a speech-language pathologist (SLP) is the primary treatment for puberphonia; however, resources describing treatment techniques specific to this patient population are lacking. CLINICAL QUESTION: What diagnostic and treatment procedures are employed in the course of treatment for an adolescent presenting with puberphonia? What factors influence interventi

Normative Acoustic Data and Voice Quality Assessment in Spanish Young Adults.

PURPOSE: The human voice is a complex acoustic signal shaped by multiple anatomical and environmental factors. It serves as a primary medium for communication, allowing individuals to express emotions, intentions, and identity. These features can change due to aging, lifestyle habits, health conditions, and several sociocultural factors. Given the impact of voice disorders on daily life and psychological well-being, accurate assessment tools are essential for early detection and intervention. Given the natural variability of the human voice and the need for appropriate assessment tools, normat

Associations Between Social Determinants of Health, Mental Effort, and Frustration for Voice Therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Early life adversity and related social determinants of health (SDOHs) are risk factors for trauma, learning and regulation difficulties, and poor adult health outcomes, such as functional voice disorders (FVDs). It is unknown if learning new voice techniques is confounded by a history of adverse experiences. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between SDOHs and cognitive effort in voice therapy. METHODS: Patients referred for voice therapy at the Emory Voice Center in Atlanta, GA were recruited to participate in a non-experimental prospective study using

Treatment Efficacy for Functional Voice Disorders with Dysphonia: A Network Meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Functional voice disorders are the most common laryngeal disorder, occurring as primary disorders or secondary to organic causes, and are typically managed with voice therapy. Frequently, dysphonia (abnormal overall voice quality) is present as a main symptom. Expert perceptual ratings are considered the gold standard for evaluation. Multiple voice therapy approaches exist, but there is no comprehensive evidence to rank their efficacy. DESIGN: Our study design was a systematic review and network meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE, CENTRAL, Scopus, and Web of Science databases a

Automated Creak Detection in Spanish Speakers with and without AdLD.

OBJECTIVES: Adductor laryngeal dystonia (AdLD) is a neurological voice disorder characterized by involuntary spasms of the adductor laryngeal muscles during phonation. An automated creak detector has shown promise in differentiating English speakers with AdLD from controls. However, no study has yet investigated creak in AdLD in Spanish speakers. In fact, there is a paucity of research validating tools to identify laryngeal dystonia (LD) in languages other than English. The purpose of this study was to determine whether creak differentiates Spanish-speaking individuals with and without AdLD.

Influence of a Whisper Loading Test on the Vibration Mechanism of the Vocal Folds in the Context of Organic Dysphonia.

Background/Objectives: Whispering has frequently been recommended to patients in order to avoid vocal overuse, particularly in those with organic dysphonia. However, there is controversy as to whether whispering may negatively affect vocal function by promoting malregulatory phonatory patterns. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a standardized short-term whisper loading task induces measurable changes in vocal function and vocal fold vibration characteristics in patients with organic dysphonia. Methods: Eight patients with clinically diagnosed vocal fold mass lesions scheduled fo

Psychoacoustically guided midfrequency band-limiting improves the diagnostic utility of classical acoustic measures in dysphonia.

Human hearing is most sensitive around 3 kHz, where small changes in harmonic structure and noise are particularly noticeable. However, traditional or standard acoustic measures of dysphonia—jitter, shimmer, harmonics-to-noise ratio, and cepstral peak prominence smoothed—are usually calculated from full-band signals and do not account for this psychoacoustic weighting. Consequently, their diagnostic accuracy is often reduced in connected speech and cases of mild dysphonia, which are common clinical presentations. We tested a simple, low-cost preprocessing strategy that limited analysis to the

Thinking outside the (voice) box: considering respiratory function in presbyphonia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Presbyphonia has long been framed as a laryngeal disorder driven by presbylaryngis, yet emerging evidence suggests that age-related respiratory decline plays a central but under-recognized role in symptomatic vocal aging. This review synthesizes work on respiratory aging, speech-breathing patterns, and respiratory muscle performance in older adults with presbyphonia, and evaluates early attempts to target these systems in rehabilitation. RECENT FINDINGS: Laryngeal atrophy and glottic insufficiency are common in aging but do not reliably predict presbyphonia. Age-related red
