BACKGROUND: Drug hypersensitivity reactions are common in pediatric hemato-oncology patients due to multiple factors including immune compromise and pharmacological complexities. Fever can signify severe delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions such as drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) or drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DIHS). The etiology of fever as an isolated hypersensitivity reaction to chemotherapeutic agents not fully understood. Here, we report three children with intracranial neoplasms experiencing recurrent febrile reactions following Vinca alkaloid

In clinical practice, tetracycline antimicrobial agents often lead to adverse events with drug fever and leukemoid reaction (LR) being rare occurrences. Here, we present a case of tigecycline-induced LR in a burn patient, which we believe is the first reported case of tigecycline-induced drug fever and LR globally in a burn patient and second overall.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) can be challenging.
OBJECTIVES: We sought to identify clinical and laboratory features outside of the Registry of Severe Cutaneous Adverse Reaction (RegiSCAR) criteria that distinguish patients with probable DRESS (RegiSCAR ≥ 4) from those with drug rash and eosinophilia (DRE).
METHODS: Using international coding classifications of drug-induced fever, generalized skin eruption due to medications, and eosinophilia, a retrospective audit from 2008 to 2023 of hospitalized patients was performed.
RESULTS: Forty

Drug fever is a febrile reaction that emerges temporarily with the administration of a drug or a variety of drugs and disappears after cessation of the targeting agent. There are a few previous reports about drug fever, but they pertain mainly to patients accompanied by no surgical intervention. Based on the literature reviewed, drug fever in patients after posterior cervical spine surgery has never been mentioned before; therefore, we present a 56-year-old man diagnosed with drug fever after posterior cervical spine surgery for traumatic cervical myelopathy. Fortunately, his body temperature

In this retrospective study, we aimed to investigate the frequency, trend, and nature of non-infectious diseases (non-IDs) as the final diagnosis for patients during an infectious disease (ID) consultation in an acute care hospital in Japan. This study included adult inpatients who underwent ID consultations between October 2016 and March 2018. The demographic data, clinical manifestations, and final non-ID diagnoses of cases were explored. Among the 502 patients who underwent ID consultations, 45 (9.0%) were diagnosed with non-IDs. The most common diagnoses were tumors (22.2%, n = 10), connec

INTRODUCTION: Misoprostol is widely used for medication abortion and postpartum hemorrhage. However, it has been associated with the adverse effect of fever, which can pose challenges in management and potentially contribute to unnecessary antibiotic use. The incidence of misoprostol-induced fever in the context of medical abortion has not been extensively studied.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study aimed to determine the incidence of fever following misoprostol administration at a tertiary care hospital in Saudi Arabia. The study included female patients who received misoprostol for pr

By definition, "quad fever" is an extreme elevation in body core temperature beyond 40.8°C (105.4°F) in a patient with spinal cord injury. This type of central nervous system hyperpyrexia is seen in spinal cord injury patients, particularly those with high cervical spine injury with quadriplegia. However, it has also been described in paraplegics with a mid- or higher level thoracic spine injury. The incidence of "quad fever" is rare, with the highest reported temperature being 44°C (111.2°F) with chronicled fatal outcomes. Though the use of antipyretics is generally efficacious, they are cons

Drug-induced fever is a significant adverse effect as many commonly used medications can cause this. The incidence of drug fever is even higher in critical care settings because multiple medications are being administered simultaneously. This poses a serious problem in critical care settings as any new fever in these settings also implies any new infection or worsening of preexisting conditions. This may lead to a detailed investigation for the cause of fever, which can be time-consuming, invasive, costly, and may also increase the duration of stay along with an associated increase in morbidit

Drug-induced fever can be caused by many medications through several mechanisms. One of the most common mechanisms is an immunologic reaction mediated by drug-induced antibodies. Herein, we report the case of a rare adverse reaction with vancomycin. A six-year-old girl being treated for necrotizing pneumonia with vancomycin developed mild neutropenia, skin rash, and fever two weeks into her therapy. These resolved after stopping vancomycin, with noted reversal of neutropenia and leukopenia. Upon rechallenging the patient with vancomycin, she developed a fever in less than 24 h from the adminis

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic therapy, including clarithromycin (CLR), has been widely used for the management of Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) lung disease in clinical settings. When patients develop adverse events (AEs) during CLR-based treatment, the treatment regimen is modified or chemotherapy itself is discontinued. The need for alternative macrolide treatment strategies is emphasized due to the high rate of AEs possibly caused by CLR. Thus, the current study aimed to examine the efficacy and safety of azithromycin (AZM) in patients with MAC lung disease whose treatment was switched from CL

BACKGROUND: Cytarabine is a nucleoside analog used in chemotherapy regimens for the treatment of multiple hematologic malignancies. One of the known adverse effects of cytarabine, particularly in patients receiving high-dose cytarabine (HDAC), is drug-induced fever. Multiple studies have demonstrated an increased risk of viridans group streptococcal bacteremia in patients who have received HDAC. For this reason, our institution and several other institutions across the country routinely include vancomycin as empiric coverage for patients who develop fever during HDAC, due to concern for resist

INTRODUCTION: Drug-induced fever is easy to overlook in respiratory departments. High fever is a rare side effect of trihexyphenidyl, which can be used clinically to treat Parkinson's disease. Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) is a group of clinical syndromes caused by various diseases, resulting in water retention and refractory hyponatremia. However, pneumonia combined with malignant hyperthermia and SIADH has rarely been reported. We describe an unusual case of malignant hyperthermia and refractory hyponatremia due to trihexyphenidyl adverse reaction.

INTRODUCTION: Anaplastic astrocytoma has a dismal prognosis with conventional treatment. Multidisciplinary treatment is needed to control the disease; however, side effects of the treatment reduce a patient's quality of life (QOL). Carmustine-impregnated wafers (Gliadel®, Eisai Co., Ltd., Tokyo, Japan), one of the treatment modalities for anaplastic astrocytoma, has been reported to have drug-induced fever as a side effect.
CASE REPORT: A 36-year-old man underwent excision for a recurrent brain tumor. Histopathological examination established a diagnosis of anaplastic astrocytoma and an intra

Purpose: Drug-induced fever is frequently reported in cancer patients treated with anti-programmed cell death 1 (PD-1)/programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1), and stoppage of the offending agent is the management of choice. However, given the complex management of cancer patients, this needs to be carefully studied. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to estimate the risk of fever associated with anti-PD-1/PD-L1 in cancer patients. Methods: From May 2010 to 2020, an electronic search was conducted through PubMed for relevant studies. All clinical trials reporting fever in cancer patients t

A 24-year-old woman with atopic dermatitis and persistent fever (axillary temperature of 37-38 °C for 6 months) received combination ophthalmic drops containing tropicamide and phenylephrine (Mydrin®-P), which exacerbated her fever within 15 min after instillation. Her axillary fever reached 40.1 °C but resolved the following day. No new dermatological symptoms developed. Although the patient's fever may have been caused by either tropicamide or phenylephrine, neither of which have been reported to induce fever in topical formulations, atopic dermatitis and tropicamide's inhibitory effect on p

Drugs can cause dysregulation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis which can result in a rise in core temperature. This type of hyperthermia is unresponsive to antipyretics and can be complicated by rhabdomyolysis, multi-organ failure and disseminated intravascular coagulation Organic causes of fever such as infection must be ruled out. Syndromes associated with drug-induced fever include neuroleptic malignant syndrome and anticholinergic, sympathomimetic and serotonin toxicity The class of offending drugs, as well as the temporal relationship to starting or stopping them, assists in dif

CASE SUMMARY: A 3-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat developed a fever 1 week after starting the anticonvulsant phenobarbital. A diagnostic work-up for seizures and subsequent onset of fever of unknown origin, consisting of MRI of the brain, cerebrospinal fluid analysis and infectious disease testing, was unremarkable. The cat was switched from phenobarbital onto pregabalin with complete resolution of the fever within 24 h, consistent with a drug-induced fever following phenobarbital administration.
RELEVANCE AND NOVEL INFORMATION: While anticonvulsant hypersensitivities have been

Burn patients are often plagued by fever due to the inflammatory nature of their injuries as well as the normal postoperative systemic inflammatory response syndrome. One etiology for fever, often not initially considered, is drug-induced fever. A rare cause of drug-induced fever is heparin with only one documented case reported in the literature. We present a case of heparin-induced fever in a patient who experienced a 32% total BSA friction burn after a motorcycle crash.
