Evaluation of Renal Function and Urinalysis in Children With Simple Febrile Convulsions.

Febrile convulsion (FC) is the most prevalent type of seizure in children. Febrile diseases have been associated with alterations in kidney function and urine indices. Therefore, in this study, renal function and urine analysis were examined in children with simple FC. The study comprised children with simple FC who were referred to the Amirkabir hospital in Arak between 2020 and 2021. Children were examined for urinalysis and kidney function by assessing the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). A total of 157 patients with FC were admitted. Hematuria, proteinuria, and pyuria were dete

Second dose of measles-mumps-rubella-varicella vaccine (MMRV) and the risk of febrile convulsions.

INTRODUCTION: Studies have shown an increased risk of febrile convulsions (FC) after first immunization with the quadrivalent measles-mumps-rubella-varicella vaccine (MMRV) compared to a first dose of measles-mumps-rubella vaccine (MMR) only or in combination with separately administered varicella vaccine (MMR + V). Therefore, it is recommended to give MMR + V at first dose and MMRV or MMR + V at second dose. Little is known on the risk of FC after MMRV at second dose, especially whether the risk depends on age, sex, history of FC or type of first dose vaccine. METHODS: A retrospective cohort

Promotion properties of TLR7 in pediatric meningitis via the NF-κB pathway.

Meningitis outcome is associated with the severity of inflammation in the subarachnoid space and that the outcome can be improved through anti-inflammation. However, a comprehensive understanding of the molecular basis underlying inflammatory responses in meningitis remains enigmatic. In the current study, we sought to determine the molecular mechanism of TLR7/NF-κB on the development of meningitis in children. Cerebrospinal fluid of patients with meningitis and children with simple febrile convulsions was collected, and meningitis mouse model was induced. TLR7 expression was determined in the

Real-world impact of antiepileptic drug combinations with versus without perampanel on healthcare resource utilization in patients with epilepsy in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: Combination regimens of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) with various mechanisms of action (MOA) are commonly used in patients with refractory epilepsy. However, outcomes related to combination AEDs with novel MOA, such as perampanel (PER), are not well described. This study compared healthcare resource utilization (HRU) among recipients of PER-based combinations versus recipients of other non-PER-based combinations. METHODS: This retrospective study used claims data from the Symphony Health's IDV® (Integrated Dataverse) database (August 2012 to July 2018). Patients were aged ≥12 years

GRIN2A Variant in A 3-Year-Old-An Expanding Spectrum?

Glutamate, the major excitatory neurotransmitter, plays a ubiquitous role in most aspects of normal brain functioning. Its indispensable position is paradoxically doubled by a high excitotoxic potential following disruption of its dynamic equilibrium. Several lines of evidence have suggested the involvement of the glutamatergic N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) in learning, memory formation, and human cognition. Furthermore, NMDARs play a pivotal role in various neuropsychiatric disorders, recently being identified as an important locus for disease-associated genomic variation. The GRIN2A

Dissecting the Role of PCDH19 in Clustering Epilepsy by Exploiting Patient-Specific Models of Neurogenesis.

PCDH19-related epilepsy is a rare genetic disease caused by defective function of PCDH19, a calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion protein of the cadherin superfamily. This disorder is characterized by a heterogeneous phenotypic spectrum, with partial and generalized febrile convulsions that are gradually increasing in frequency. Developmental regression may occur during disease progression. Patients may present with intellectual disability (ID), behavioral problems, motor and language delay, and a low motor tone. In most cases, seizures are resistant to treatment, but their frequency decreases

Improving early diagnosis of rare diseases using Natural Language Processing in unstructured medical records: an illustration from Dravet syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The growing use of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) is promoting the application of data mining in health-care. A promising use of big data in this field is to develop models to support early diagnosis and to establish natural history. Dravet Syndrome (DS) is a rare developmental and epileptic encephalopathy that commonly initiates in the first year of life with febrile seizures (FS). Age at diagnosis is often delayed after 2 years, as it is difficult to differentiate DS at onset from FS. We aimed to explore if some clinical terms (concepts) are significantly more used in the elect

From program suspension to the pandemic: A qualitative examination of Australia's vaccine pharmacovigilance system over 10 years.

BACKGROUND: In 2010, the Australian seasonal influenza vaccination program for children under 5 years of age was suspended due to an unexpected increase in fever and febrile convulsions causally associated with one particular influenza vaccine brand. A subsequent national review made seven recommendations to improve vaccine pharmacovigilance. Ten years on, in advance of implementing the COVID-19 immunisation program, we evaluated views on the capacity of Australia's vaccine pharmacovigilance system to promptly detect, examine and communicate a signal. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were

Clinical pharmacokinetic study of latrepirdine via in silico sublingual administration.

BACKGROUND: The rapid expansion of 16S rRNA gene sequencing in challenging clinical contexts has resulted in a growing body of literature of variable quality. To a large extent, this is due to a failure to address spurious signal that is characteristic of samples with low levels of bacteria and high levels of non-bacterial DNA. We have developed a workflow based on the paired-end read Illumina MiSeq-based approach, which enables significant improvement in data quality, post-sequencing. We demonstrate the efficacy of this methodology through its application to paediatric upper-respiratory sampl
