Evaluation of Patients With Febrile Seizure: Risk Factors, Reccurence, Treatment and Prognosis.

INTRODUCTION: Febrile convulsion (FC) is the most common neurological disorder in childhood. The aim of this study was to determine the risk factors for recurrence and the development of epilepsy from the demographic data of these patients. METHODS: A retrospective study was made of 680 patients with FC who presented to our hospital. Patients with only FC were defined as group 1 and those who developed epilepsy after FC as group 2. Comparisons were made between the 2 groups of the demographic parameters, parental consanguinity, familial history of FCs or epilepsy, criteria for starting prophy

Use of telephone helpline data for syndromic surveillance of adverse events following immunization in Australia: A retrospective study, 2009 to 2017.

BACKGROUND: The increasing availability of electronic healthcare data offers an opportunity to enhance adverse events following immunisation (AEFI) signal monitoring in near real-time. AIM: To evaluate the potential use of telephone helpline data to augment the existing AEFI surveillance system in Victoria, Australia. METHODS: Anonymised telephone helpline call data were extracted between 2009 and 2017. For comparison, we included AEFI reports to the Victorian enhanced passive surveillance system, SAEFVIC-"Surveillance of Adverse Events Following Vaccination In the Community". The temporal p

Non-specific diagnoses are frequent in patients hospitalized after calling 112 and their mortality is high - a register-based Danish cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The number of patients calling for an ambulance increases. A considerable number of patients receive a non-specific diagnosis at discharge from the hospital, and this could imply less serious acute conditions, but the mortality has only scarcely been studied. The aim of this study was to examine the most frequent sub-diagnoses among patients with hospital non-specific diagnoses after calling 112 and their subsequent mortality. METHODS: A historical cohort study of patients brought to the hospital by ambulance after calling 112 in 2007-2014 and diagnosed with a non-specific diagnos

Beneficial Effects of Ibuprofen on Pentylenetetrazol-induced Convulsion.

Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is commonly used as an anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic, and analgesic. Although some studies have focused on the anti-inflammatory and anti-pyretic properties of ibuprofen during febrile convulsions, only one has investigated its antiepileptic effects. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the effects of ibuprofen in rats exposed to pentylenetetrazol (PTZ)-induced seizures. In total, 48 rats were randomly divided in two groups: Group A for electroencephalography (EEG) recordings and Group B for behavioral assessment. All

Severe pallid breath-holding spells treated with low-dose theophylline.

BACKGROUND: The medical treatment for severe pallid breath-holding spells accompanied with severe bradycardia or transient cardiac arrest is controversial. Although various medications have been reported to be effective, patients treated with pacemaker insertion are not always evaluated for pharmacological therapy beforehand. CASE REPORT: A 9-month-old boy developed pallid breath-holding spells. At 15 months of age, a Holter electrocardiogram revealed 12 s of asystole during a breath-holding spell. Treatment with low-dose theophylline sustained-release dry syrup (5.3 mg/kg/day) led to complet

Pharmacoresistant Epilepsy in Childhood: Think of the Cerebral Folate Deficiency, a Treatable Disease.

Cerebral folate deficiency (CFD) is a neurological disorder characterized by low levels of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The prevalence of this autosomal recessive disorder is estimated to be <1/1,000,000. Fifteen different pathogenic variants in the folate receptor 1 gene (FOLR1) encoding the receptor of folate α (FRα) have already been described. We present a new pathogenic variation in the FOLR1 in a childhood-stage patient. We aim to establish the core structure of the FRα protein mandatory for its activity. A three-year-old child was admitted at hospi

Changes of HMGB-1 and sTLR4 levels in cerebrospinal fluid of patients with febrile seizures.

PURPOSE: Fever-induced inflammatory processes and pro-inflammatory cytokines have gained importance in recent years in the pathogenesis of febrile convulsion. Increased levels of HMGB1 (high mobility group box 1), one of the most important pro-inflammatory cytokines, are associated with prolongation of seizure duration, recurrence of seizures and the development of epilepsy. Changes in the sTLR4 level (soluble toll-like receptor 4) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are thought to be associated with memory and learning functions. In our study, we aimed to evaluate changes in HMGB1 and sTLR4 leve

Comparative study on the efficacy and safety of low-dose sodium valproate vs. diazepam in the prevention and treatment of pediatric febrile convulsion.

BACKGROUND: Febrile convulsion has a serious impact on the health and development of children. Diazepam treatment for febrile convulsion has many adverse reactions, which have a negative impact on the therapeutic effect. Therefore, the present study examined the efficacy and safety of low-dose sodium valproate on the treatment of pediatric patients with febrile convulsion. METHODS: From August 2016 to August 2019, a total of 110 children who suffered recurrent febrile convulsions were selected for the present study. These children were randomly divided into the observation group and the contr

Ten years of vaccinovigilance in Italy: an overview of the pharmacovigilance data from 2008 to 2017.

Reporting and analysis of Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFIs) are the cornerstones of vaccine safety surveillance prompting causality assessment and signal detection. This paper describes the impact of the Italian Pharmacovigilance System of vaccines over a 10-year period (2008-2017). The reporting rate (RR) per all distributed dose was calculated. Serious AEFIs and causality assessments for fatal cases were described. The main results from signal detection were reported. During the study period, 46,430 AEFIs were reported with an overall RR of 17.2 per 100,000 distributed doses. Ita

Repository of proposed pathways and protein-protein interaction networks in age-related macular degeneration.

PURPOSE: A trinucleotide repeat expansion in TCF4 is thought to cause Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) in ~70% of European patients. In addition, strong evidence exists for the involvement of rare variants in COL8A2 and SLC4A11 in a small number of FECD cases, and more controversially, it has been suggested that variants in ZEB1, AGBL1, and LOXHD1 may also be involved. We screened patients without a TCF4 repeat expansion for causative variants in the other candidate FECD genes. METHODS: Genomic DNA from blood was genotyped for expansion of the CTG18.1 repeat in intron 2 of TCF4 usin
