Diphyllobothriasis, a fish-borne infection caused by broad tapeworms and transmitted through the consumption of raw or undercooked fish, continues to pose a public health concern in Japan. However, nationwide epidemiological data on hospitalized patients are limited. We conducted a retrospective analysis using the Japanese Diagnosis Procedure Combination (DPC) inpatient administrative database from April 2014 to March 2021. Hospitalized patients with diphyllobothriasis were identified using the ICD-10 code B700. Demographic characteristics, clinical presentations, treatment patterns, temporal

BACKGROUND: The introduction of second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) over the past 2 decades generated considerable optimism that better antipsychotic treatments for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder were possible. SGAs offer several tolerability benefits over first-generation antipsychotics (FGAs), particularly with respect to extrapyramidal symptoms. However, SGAs can induce serious metabolic dysregulations, especially in drug-naive, first-episode, and child and adolescent populations, with olanzapine and clozapine having the highest propensity to cause these abnormalities. In this conte

INTRODUCTION: There is no consistent definition of burnout. It is neither a defined diagnosis in ICD-10 nor in DSM-IV. Yet it is diagnosed by office-based doctors and clinicians. Mainly due to reimbursement reasons, diagnoses like depression are used instead of burnout diagnoses. Therefore burnout has a very high individual, social and economic impact.
OBJECTIVES: How is burnout diagnosed? Which criteria are relevant? How valid and reliable are the used tools? What kind of disorders in case of burnout are relevant for a differential diagnosis? What is the economic effect of a differential diagn

PURPOSE: The P2Y14 receptor (P2Y14R) is closely associated with several inflammatory diseases in humans. Although several P2Y14R antagonists have been reported to date, few have been successfully developed as therapeutic drugs, and none have entered clinical trials. We aimed to obtain P2Y14R antagonists with high antagonistic activity and druggability for further investigation into anti-inflammatory drugs.
METHODS: Three series of novel P2Y14R antagonists were screened. The druggability of the most promising compounds was evaluated through assays for the inhibition of cytochrome P450 and hERG

Diphyllobothrium spp., also known as fish tapeworms, is the largest human tapeworm, reaching up to 25 meters of length. Human are considered the definitive host in the Diphyllobothrium lifecycle. Adult tapeworms attach to human intestinal mucosa with to bilateral grooves. There are at least 14 different species of Diphyllobothrium spp. Capable of causing Dyphyllobothriosis, being D. latum and D. nihonkaiense the most frequent etiologic agents in humans. We present the clinical picture and endoscopic images on a patient with incidental finding of Dyphyllobothriosis in a colonoscopy.

We report two recent cases of diphyllobothriid cestode infection identified during colonoscopy in asymptomatic individuals in Tokyo, Japan. Both patients lacked distinctive dietary habits, consuming only commonly available raw fish. In one case, the tapeworm was found in the terminal ileum; in the other case, the parasite extended into the ascending colon, which is a rare site of detection during colonoscopy. Morphological features were consistent with Dibothriocephalus nihonkaiensis. Blood tests revealed no notable abnormalities. These cases underscore that such infections may occur even in i

A bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops sp., stranded on the coast of South Carolina, USA was found to be heavily infected in its intestine by tapeworms, which we identified molecularly. Sequencing of portions of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) and nuclear large subunit ribosomal RNA (28S rRNA) genes showed the cestodes to be Diphyllobothrium stemmacephalum, commonly known as a broad tapeworm. Infections of marine mammals by Diphyllobothrium have been previously reported in the Northwestern Atlantic Ocean, but only to genus level. Infection by tapeworms may be rare in dolphins in South C

Diphyllobothriosis is a tapeworm infection and is associated with the consumption of raw or undercooked fish. Among causative pathogens of human tapeworm infection, Dibothriocephalus nihonkaiensis is the second most prevalent species, contributing to over 2000 cases of human infection annually. Although D. nihonkaiensis is primarily distributed in the northern Pacific region, several cases have recently been reported from other parts of the world, including the United States. As there is a concern regarding the further spread of D. nihonkaiensis infection, accurate diagnosis and understanding

A 35-year-old man with fever and diarrhea visited our hospital because of white string-like fecal excretion. Based on a morphological examination of the excreted object, a Diphyllobothrium infection was suspected. Additionally, Gram staining of a fecal sample revealed Campylobacter infection. After the intraduodenal administration of meglumine/diatrizoate sodium, the tapeworm was excreted. A polymerase chain reaction-based DNA sequence analysis demonstrated that the tapeworm excreted in this case was Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiensis. This report presents a rare case of coinfection with Diphyllob

Between 1898 and 1940, eight human cases of diphyllobothriasis were reported in Argentina, always in recently arrived European immigrants. In 1982, the first autochthonous case was detected, and since then, 33 other autochthonous cases have been reported, totaling 42 cases of human diphyllobothriasis in Argentina before the present study. Our aim is to update the information on diphyllobothriasis in Argentina by identifying specimens from new cases using morphometrical and/or molecular methods. We also aim to assess the epidemiological relevance of this food-borne disease in the country. Anamn

The incidence of human diphyllobothriasis is expected to rise amidst the current global popularity of Japanese cuisine, such as sushi, which contains raw fish. We report a case of a 10-year-old boy with a diphyllobothriasis infection acquired via sushi consumption. The patient was otherwise healthy, exhibited no symptoms, and was successfully treated with a single dose of 10 mg/kg praziquantel. In Japan, this parasite is known as "Sanada-mushi" because it resembles a Sanada cord. Prompt recognition of this parasite by evoking the Sanada cord's appearance may facilitate early diagnosis and trea

Diphyllobothriosis, a fish-borne zoonosis in South America, is mainly caused by the Pacific broad tapeworm Adenocephalus pacificus Nybelin, 1931, a parasite of considerable concern in fishery resources due to its impact on public health. A new diphyllobothrid, Diphyllobothrium sprakeri Hernández-Orts et al. Parasites Vectors 14:219, 2021, was recently described from sea lions from the Pacific Coast, but marine fish acting as intermediate hosts are unknown. The objective of this study was to confirm the presence of plerocercoid larvae of Diphyllobothriidae Lühe, 1910 (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriide

Diphyllobothriasis is a human parasitic infection that is widespread in the Northern Hemisphere. Popular sport fish such as pike and perch are the source of human infection. We document the autochthonous origin of diphyllobothriasis in a popular tourist destination in Central Europe, which likely marks recent colonization of the parasite.

Background: Dibothriocephalus nihonkaiense (previously known as Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense) infection is not common in Hong Kong. D. nihonkaiense is a fish-borne cestode parasite that infects humans after consuming raw or insufficiently cooked fish containing plerocercoids. Case presentation: We reported a case of D. nihonkaiense infection in a 40-year-old woman who presented with a complaint of epigastric pain and diarrhea. A curvilinear opacity was seen at the upper quadrant of the abdomen via abdominal X-ray. An incomplete 80 cm long strobila of D. nihonkaiense without a scolex and neck

Diphyllobothriosis is a parasitic infection of humans caused by the broad fish tapeworm (Dibothriocephalus latus; synonym Diphyllobothrium latum). This disease is widespread in the Northern Hemisphere including Europe. Popular sport fish such as perch (Perca fluviatilis) and pike (Esox lucius) are the source of human infection. Here we document the first autochthonous case of diphyllobothriosis linked to the consumption of raw pike roe (caviar) originating from a popular tourist destination in South Bohemia. This is probably a recent introduction of the parasite into the Lipno Reservoir, which

Dibothriocephalus ditremus and Dibothriocephalus latus are diphyllobothriidean tapeworms autochthonous to Europe. Their larval stages (plerocercoids) may seriously alter health of their intermediate fish hosts (D. ditremus) or cause intestinal diphyllobothriosis of the final human host (D. latus). Despite numerous data on the internal structure of broad tapeworms, many aspects of the morphology and physiology related to host–parasite co-existence remain unclear for these 2 species. The main objective of this work was to elucidate functional morphology of the frontal part (scolex) of plerocerco

Human diphyllobothriasis, caused by Dibothriocephalus nihonkaiensis, is prevalent globally, especially in regions where raw fish is consumed. Recent molecular diagnostic techniques have made species identification of tapeworm parasites and the determination of genetic variations among parasite populations possible. However, only a few studies done over a decade ago, have reported on the genetic variation among D. nihonkaiensis in Japan. The present study employed PCR-based mitochondrial DNA analysis to specifically detect D. nihonkaiensis from archived clinical samples, and to determine any ge
