Human infection by a "fish tapeworm", Diphyllobothrium latum, in a non-endemic country.

We document a case of locally acquired "broad- or fish-tapeworm" infection caused by Diphyllobothrium latum in a 27-year-old Spanish man, confirmed by molecular analysis (COI gene). The patient had naturally expelled a worm of 110 cm in length, but the physical examination did not yield any remarkable findings, and the patient did not suffer from any particular symptoms. Laboratory test results were normal except for a remarkable increase in the red blood cell count, and an evident decrease in the mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin. Vitamin B12 and folic acid values were i

A case of Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense infection as confirmed by mitochondrial COX1 gene sequence analysis.

Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense has been reported in Korea as Diphyllobothrium latum because of their close morphologic resemblance. We have identified a human case of D. nihonkaiense infection using the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (cox1) gene sequence analysis. On 18 February 2012, a patient who had consumed raw fish a month earlier visited our outpatient clinic with a long tapeworm parasite excreted in the feces. The body of the segmented worm was 2 m long and divided into the scolex (head) and proglottids. It was morphologically close to D. nihonkaiense and D. latum. The cox1

Tapeworm Diphyllobothrium dendriticum (Cestoda)--neglected or emerging human parasite?

BACKGROUND: A total number of 14 valid species of Diphyllobothrium tapeworms have been described in literature to be capable of causing diphyllobothriosis, with D. latum being the major causative agent of all human infections. However, recent data indicate that some of these infections, especially when diagnosed solely on the basis of morphology, have been identified with this causative agent incorrectly, confusing other Diphyllobothrium species with D. latum. Another widely distributed species, D. dendriticum, has never been considered as a frequent parasite of man, even though it is found co

Praziquantel treatment in trematode and cestode infections: an update.

Status and emerging issues in the use of praziquantel for treatment of human trematode and cestode infections are briefly reviewed. Since praziquantel was first introduced as a broadspectrum anthelmintic in 1975, innumerable articles describing its successful use in the treatment of the majority of human-infecting trematodes and cestodes have been published. The target trematode and cestode diseases include schistosomiasis, clonorchiasis and opisthorchiasis, paragonimiasis, heterophyidiasis, echinostomiasis, fasciolopsiasis, neodiplostomiasis, gymnophalloidiasis, taeniases, diphyllobothriasis,

Food and water security issues in Russia III: food- and waterborne diseases in the Russian Arctic, Siberia and the Far East, 2000-2011.

BACKGROUND: The food- and waterborne disease situation in Russia requires special attention. Poor quality of centralized water supplies and sewage systems, biological and chemical contamination of drinking water, as well as contamination of food products, promote widespread infectious diseases, significantly exceeding nationwide rates in the population living in the two-thirds of Russian northern territories. OBJECTIVES: The general aim was to assess the levels of food- and waterborne diseases in selected regions of Russian Arctic, Siberia and the Far East (for the period 2000-2011), and to c

[Human diphyllobothriosis. A case in non-endemic area of Argentina].

Diphyllobothriosis is an intestinal parasitosis caused by cestodes infection of the genus Diphyllobothrium. In Argentina, the Andean Patagonia is considered an endemic area for this parasitosis. Diphyllobothrium latum infection has not been previously reported in the province of Mendoza, Argentina. We are now reporting then the first case. Diphyllobothriosis was confirmed by examination of morphologic characteristics of the eggs eliminated in the patients' feces. These results suggest the requirement of a more specific training of health workers in the diagnosis and treatment of non endemic pa

[The specific features of Diphyllobothrium latum circulation in the natural foci of the Kostroma region].

Three hundred pikes in the Kostroma section of the Gorky Reservoir, in the Kostroma Overflow, and in the Galich and Chukloma Lakes were examined for infection with Diphyllobothrium latum larvae. In the Kostroma section of the Gorky Reservoir and in the Kostroma Overflow, diphyllobothriasis was recorded in 66.7% (12/18) and 14.7% (11/75) of the pikes, respectively. The high intensity of the epidemic process in diphyllobothriasis was confirmed in the Kostroma Region. The number of notified cases was noted to tend to increase: 35 and 173 cases in 1994 and 1999, respectively.

Validity of the bear tapeworm Diphyllobothrium ursi (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) based on morphological and molecular markers.

The bear tapeworm Diphyllobothrium ursi is described based upon the morphology of adult tapeworms recovered from the brown bear (Ursus arctos middendorffi) and larval plerocercoids found in sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) from Kodiak Island in Alaska in 1952. However, in 1987 D. ursi was synonymized with Diphyllobothrium dendriticum, and the taxonomic relationship between both species has not subsequently been revised. In this study mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene (cox1) sequences of holotype and paratype D. ursi specimens that had been preserved in a formalin-acetic acid

Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense infection linked to chilled salmon consumption.

This is a case of a 40-year-old Japanese adult male who had acute onset watery diarrhoea with intermittent abdominal discomfort. Several days later, he found a 1 metre of tape-shaped object emerged from his anus and was eventually admitted to our hospital for further investigation. Stool examination revealed eggs of Diphyllobothrium with characteristic shape in his stool. After oral praziquantel administration, segments of proglottids were expelled from his anus. The proglottids were sent to the Infectious Disease Surveillance Centre of Japan, and DNA analysis of the proglottids proved to be t

Four human cases of Diphyllobothrium latum infection.

Diphyllobothrium latum infections in 4 young Korean men detected from 2008 to 2012 are presented. Three were diagnosed based on spontaneously discharged strobila of the adult worm in their feces, and 1 case was diagnosed by finding the worm at colonoscopy examination in a local clinic. The morphologic characteristics of the gravid proglottid and eggs were consistent with D. latum. All patients were treated with praziquantel 15 mg/kg, and follow-up stool examinations were done at 2 months after the medication. The main clinical complaints were intermittent gastrointestinal troubles such as indi

First molecular identification of Diphyllobothrium dendriticum plerocercoids from feral rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in Chile.

Between April and June 2009, 1,075 feral rainbow trout from 10 different lakes involved with aquaculture activities in Los Lagos Region, Chile, were inspected for Diphyllobothrium species. All viscera and muscles of the fish were examined using stereomicroscopy; pyloric cecae and stomachs infected with plerocercoids were checked by histology and scanning electron microscopy. Plerocercoids of Diphyllobothrium dendriticum were confirmed by PCR and sequencing of COI and 18S rRNA + ITS1 + 5.8S rRNA + ITS2 genes for the first time in Chile. Overall prevalence of plerocercoids of D. dendriticum was

[Morpho-functional changes of cloacal bursa of the herring gull in experimental infection with gull tapeworm].

Using the methods of light microscopy, the quantitative changes in the cells of the cloacal bursa of herring gull (Larus argentatus mongolicus) chicks were studied during experimental infection with gull-tapeworm Diphyllobothrium dendriticum. The area of the follicles within the bursa and the number of eosinophils in the infected chicks were found to increase. In the follicles the number of blast cells and large lymphocytes was elevated. The reduction of small lymphocytes and plasma cells numbers in the infected gulls may be due to a slower cell cycle or cell migration into the inflammatory fo

[The environmental conditions and predictors of formation of the bases for a combination of Diphyllobothrium dendriticum and Triaenophorus nodulosus foci in the flood-river ecosystem of the Angara River].

Investigations were conducted in the context of the landscape-biocenological concept. The formation of water-storage basins in the valley of the Angara River was shown to give rise to the transformation of the morphological structure and hydrological regimen of a landscape, which determined a change in some environmental conditions and factors of a combination of foci and the emergence of others. The morphological structure and hydrological regimen of a landscape, the species composition of ecosystems, the populations of hosts, and their biocenotic relations were transformed due to the direct

Molecular identification of Diphyllobothrium latum and a brief review of diphyllobothriosis in China.

Two tapeworm specimens collected in northeast China in 2009 and 2011 were identified as Diphyllobothrium latum based on morphological criteria. Molecular methods were used to confirm their identity and analyze genetic variations compared with published data for this species. Species identity was confirmed by molecular characterization of the 18S rDNA partial sequence, complete sequences of internal transcribed spacers (ITSs) and 5.8S rDNA, and partial sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) and mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 5 (nad5).
